'Twas our first time to set eyes on Legaspi..and I can say that we made our best decision of choosing Balay de la Rama as our accommodation. Unlike the typical Inns or hotels, Balay de la Rama offers such kind of hospitality. Staffs are very helpful and indeed, FRIENDLY.. :)) You can even have time to chat with them and hear stories about the places you wanna visit. Ask them the most convenient and less expensive way of transportation to the places you wanted to see and they'll give you infos.

We stayed here for 3 days/2 nights and all I can say is, "WE'RE VERY MUCH SATISFIED"!

It is a great experience for us..and as the saying goes, "first impressions lasts"..
Yes, It will last. We will never forget that at our first time, disappointments has never been an issue..in fact, we've never encountered any types of discomfort or inconvenience at all !
We're even planning to come back here again next year..and still we will choose Balay de la Rama..(yes, you've read it right..we're choosing it AGAIN!)

Very near the airport, and it is situated near tourists spots..(thumbs UP)

Breakfast was served on time..and if you want it earlier, you could just ask the staffs to serve it on your preferred time..it was Good!

We were lucky enough because we say the wholeness of Mt. Mayon. They said, it is not everyday that the active volcano reveals itself..so yeah, I guess we're lucky :))

The rooms are clean and with a/c each..plus the bathroom is also clean..

What we like most about the place is the spacious design..a style of a typical home. Well, we've never felt away from home when we stayed here. I like the fresh air coming in from the balcony of the third floor. We used to stay there at night and feel the cold fresh air..

It's an undeniably unforgettable experience..

Thank you Balay de la Rama..hope to see you again on our next trip in Bicol next year :)))
More powers and God Bless.. !!!

Our experience here was average..just an okay experience. We went for this property due to the overwhelming positive reviews which I think was a little bit overhyped.

1. In the middle of everything - not quite really. Yes It is near major attractions such as Lignon Hill, airport, mayon, daraga church. What it is not - it is not anywhere near Legaspi city. It takes about 10-15 minutes to Legaspi by trike (100PHP one way more or less) and jeep only. Taxis are for hire only at the airport. Harder to travel at night to daraga from Legaspi City too.

It is even harder that only a few people know about Balay de la Rama or where it is in Banag, Daraga.

2. According to Balay - The price include free breakfast, free wifi, hot shower and A/C.
The difference between the standard plus and the deluxe will the private balcony and the size of the room. We were billeted on the 3rd floor which has 3 rooms - 1 deluxe and 2 standard.

- Breakfast is ordinary and no where like the feast reviewers has been raving about - just a small piece of meat, a fried egg, cucumber, tomato, and rice, and a sachet of instant coffee. (to be fair we were not breakfast eaters anyways but still...)

- private balcony - only one room on the third floor had a balcony. the so called second floor was on the street level, and the ground floor (basement i would more likely think) was were the dining area and the family lives. And yes, totally agree with one of the reviewers, all other rooms facing or near the street would be bound to be noisy...very noisy with the jeeps and trikes zooming about, and barkers

-The nice thing about the 3rd floor was that it had it's own spacious living area.

- space difference - well the standard room had an ordinary a/c which was sometimes was not cold enough. also the standard room had bigger space than the one with the balcony. The so-called deluxe room had a split type a/c.

- all three rooms on the third floor had no wifi signal and no tv. go to the basement or the first floor for wifi

3. Again on the Balay brochure - A restaurant inside the Bed & Breakfast has been designed on
travelers need with Bicolono and international food.A part of those, a bar serve you
some drinks and snacks all day long. Also in other materials, it says that coffee and tea are available all day long or something

ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE NON EXISTENT or we were not made aware of.

4. Each room will have its own atmosphere with an astonishing view on the Mt Mayon.

ummmm- just go around on a trike for an astonishing view of Mayon. Mayon views can be found from rooms at the back of the property.

5. Pros of Balay - rooms were clean, there was hot showers, and rooms (most of them) were spacious.

6. Suggestions
- hopefully the owners were more visible and available. Perhaps a bell system should be installed for visitors to call the owners in case there. we had the run of the house as it was low season and we were in and out of the property most of the time without seeing our hosts most of the time. we could have easily left the property without paying because there was no one around to see us off.

- orient guests about the property layout. i.e. where things can be found like where the dining area is, where to get a glass of water etc.

- provide a water drinking station on the second floor (which is street level and entrance to the property) and where most people pass by

- hopefully again it would be nice if the hosts would take extra effort in providing info regarding where to eat, how to get around, how to find things creating an itinerary (aside from the usual sights like casagwa ruins, lignon etc) and helping guests with queries etc. etc. yes jess and karen were helpful and nice but i think it was not as in-depth as expected from a local. perhaps a little more push to be more interactive with guests would do the trick rather leaving guests on their own devices.

i would recommend this property if you want a clean place to stay for one to two days.

Room Tip: stay at the back of the property if noise from jeeps, trikes and barkers will bother you. choos...

Hi Planet Venus,
Thank you very much for your review, we all the time welcome useful feedbacks from our guests in order to improve our service better. For example, we now have bells (in fact, a small gong and a handcrafted pestle) in the first and second floors which our guests can use to call the attention of the staff if they are in another parts of the house doing houseworks.
On one hand, our guests do have mixed reactions about our location – it is in the middle of everything and accessible to the places that Bicol is famous for: Cagsawa Ruins, Lignon Hill, etc., so it can at times be busy. It is still near to Legazpi and the airport, approximately 15 min by tricycle, and so far, such distance had never been an issue to our other guests before. Nevertheless, Balay de la Rama’s history is tied precisely to the land where it stands, hence we try to do our best to make make its interiors enjoyable and comfortable (i.e putting more plants in the balcony, installing hammocks, more tables in the back garden), to protect our guests from the busyness of the outside world and enjoy the Albay provincial air.
Do feel free to recommend on how we can improve our breakfast menu, even if you are not a breakfast-eater yourself.
We are resisting very much from putting TV in all the rooms, in order to encourage guests to interact and hopefully make new friends during their stay in our bed & breakfast to make their trips more memorable.
We are working on improving our restaurant, bar & reception, therefore restaurant now is only open during breakfast, but yes, free coffee is still available all day long, just place a request to our staff.
Our airconditioning system are well-maintained and so far we haven’t received complaints about their malfunction.
Based on the many reviews you have written for TripAdvisor, we have seen that you are an avid traveler and a fastidious one too- as you did not like many of the places you had been to. Nevertheless, we hope still that those experiences had been worthwhile and hope to see you again to enjoy bicol hospitality.

My first trip to Bicol. First stop Legazpi. I chose Balay dela Rama coz its not that far to the airport.
Then what makes this good stay, its near to almost everything you need to see in Legazpi and Daraga.
10mins to Cagsawa Ruins. (tip- go there between 7am-10am) so you get to see Mt. Mayon at its peak.
15mins to Lingnon Park.Overlooking view of LEgazpi city.
20mins to downtown Legazpi city and Embarcadero.
Room is clean. Room downstairs near the garden is awesome. But wifi is weak.
Breakfast is simple.
Best value for the money. And Jess is very accomodating.

Thank you very much, we are working hard to make Balay de la Rama your home away from home. We would like to inform you that we will consider your comments and will upgrade our breakfast. As you probably know, we are having a Coconut farm 5 minutes away and we are growing a lot of organic products...
Hope to see you again

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for one night on Aug 20-21. We were positively surprised by the quality of the room provided to us. It is very spacious and clean. AC and hot/cold shower is working fine. CRT TV with Cable is available. The bed is very comfortable and has clean sheets. Very accessible to Cagsawa ruins and lignon hill and public transpo going to anywhere. For just 850/night I think it's good value for our money.

Only negetive thing I have is about our laundry. We had our laundry done, but it was not clear to us if they really wieghed our clothes or the girl just guessed the weight, there was no proof. They will do your laundry for 50 pesos per kilo (6 kilos minimum) but we were able to get a deal pay just half if we are below 3 kilos. I think we never exceeded 3 kilos, but oh well, we still payed what we're asked. Anyway, I hope you can improve communications like this with your customer. But that was just a minor thing. We really loved this place. :D

Great room , large , bright and very clean. Fantastic veiw from the balcony. Jess was extremely helpful and a perfect host. All the main attraction are in easy reach and Jess was most helpful in arranging trips. The only minor points I would raise is it would be good to have a shaving mirror and vanity shelf in the bathroom. Also the bedroom could do with somewhere to empty your pockets like a bedside cabinet or small table. Appart from that a great stay and somewhere I could happily recommend.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In the Bicolano language, "Balay" means house, and we strive to be just that, your home away from home but with the backyard view of Mayon Volcano, to add a bit of spice to it. Balay de la Rama is a six-room family house, with six spacious rooms available for short-term homestay. Like any provincial home, it has big windows to promote natural ventilation, and indeed, the gentle, or sometimes stalwart breezes are enough to lull you to sleep as you take your afternoon siesta by the wooden sofa, or better yet, on the hammock by the balcony. If by any chance it is summer, and the mango tree is in full bloom, you can spend afternoons picking mango, or if that is too much effort, you can wait for them to fall, so you can eat them with hot bagoong (shrimp paste). If you’d rather read than be hit by falling mangoes, then the owner’s personal collections are free for you to browse. Come dinnertime, you can join the family meal to sample that spicy Bicolano cooking, such as "pinangat," or "ginantaang gulay," or you can request for that poor man’s fare, such as tinapa (smoked fish) or "tuyo" (salted fish), if you suddenly crave for them. We won't force you to eat "balut" (fertilized duck egg), but would love to see your priceless expression as you try. If you came to Bicol to see moody, fiery Mayon, all you need to do is cast a sideways glance by the window, and there it is. But we know you may want to swim with the whale sharks in Donsol, wakeboard in CWC or island-hop in Caramoan, then this is a great jump-off point with easy access to all kinds of transport to your destination. The land at which Balay de la Rama stands has been with the dela Rama family for more than a century. While Balay itself isn't ancient, the warm family spirit and hospitality is. Your Bicolana host is herself an avid backpacker, but knows that indeed, there is no place like home. ... more   less
