I just got back yesterday from a one night stay at Hotel Guarocuya and I was not at all disappointed. The first impression while driving the malecon isn't that great. The sign isn't really that clear and the exterior shows the hotel's age. When we walked in we were warmly greeted by hotel staff from that moment on they did everything possible to fulfill all of our requests.(got us the best view possible, brought us soda at 2am, had breakfast ready at the exact moment we requested the night before, etc.)

A standard room was a bargain and since it was just the two of us this would have been fine but we requested the best view possible and the single rooms available had okay views but not the best in the hotel. So we opted for a double room which could easily sleep 3 people with one queen size and one single bed. The difference in price was only 200 pesos but the view was worth easily 50 times as much. The view was simply breathtaking. The hotel is well over 50 years old and it shows, in the colour scheme, the bathrooms, the strange wallpaper border selection and furniture but this did not hinder our enjoyment of the hotel in anyway. It is actually quite charming and lovely. The bathroom sink is held up by four posts and we thought it was so retro and cool. The tv is large and all the channels work and the room was absolutely spotless from floor to ceiling. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning kept the room nice and cool while we were there.

The hotel also offers a casino but we didn't get a chance to check it out. At night there are guards and drivers outside of the casino as well as security and military personnel. We definitely got a feeling that the hotel was safe and secure.

I had read earlier in my guidebook (Moon Guides Dominican Republic 2010) about a tour guide that works out of this hotel. His name is Julio Felix and he is responsible for taking our trip to the next level. He accompanied us to a seafood restaurant upon our request, arranged an itinerary on the spot for our tour the next day and then zipped off on a motoconcho. He came the next morning with snacks prepared and we set off at the break of dawn. He has been a guide for a long time as well as a native of the area. He warned us about every bump and crack in the road, taught us about endemic bird species, took us to beautiful secluded private beaches, rivers, the best restaurants and kept us happy the entire trip. . Every we went he knew people and they treated him with kindness and respect and it's obvious why. While other birding guides in the area charge an arm and a leg Julio's rates are a bargain and he's been and ecotourism/ birding guide for longer than anyone else. If you plan to be in the south for any reason and could use a guide don't hesitate to stop by the hotel and check him out.

Affordable, pristine, breathtaking views, better service than we're used to here in the Dominican, clean and fresh food. This was a great option and I'm sure we'll be heading back soon.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a nice view but the one's on the 2nd floor right above the casino are a bit less attractive. Ask them when you get there to show you the best room and they will happily oblige.
