“Tropical Paradise. Great trip, Great stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2014

I spent 3 months in Surf Break Lodge with my boyfriend. Our stay was from the end of December till the end of March and we really enjoyed our time there and we have only positive impressions about our trip.

The rooms are very simple, but clean. We were staying in a studio and it worked out perfect for us. It had enough space for two people and everything that we needed for a long term stay. All kitchen supplies were provided too, so cooking inside was not a problem. For the price we paid for the room, it was a great deal.

The atmosphere at Surf break Lodge was great. The fact that the place is located outside the town was perfect, because the place is hidden from all the noise of the busy street, loud cars and motorbikes. So every day at Surf Break we were able to enjoy the sounds of nature and the sound of the ocean in the morning. Very peaceful and relaxing!

The location of the place couldn't be better, the main surf beach, Playa Encuentro, is within the walking distance. So if you are planning on surfing a lot and spending a lot of time at the surf beach, like me and my boyfriend did, Surf break Lodge is definitely the place to stay. If you need something in the town of Cabarete, or you’re planning on kite surfing in the afternoon in Cabarete kite beach – it’s only 5 min drive away. You can take a local bus there (which is a pretty interesting experience:) ) or a moto-taxi for very cheap. But since we were staying there for a while, me and my boyfriend rented a scooter in the town for the entire period of our stay for a very fair price, which was very convenient for moving around the area. If you want to rent a car, it’s also not a problem, there are plenty car rental offices in the town.

We loved our trip to the DR and loved our stay at the Lodge. If we visit the DR again, Surf Break Lodge will definitely be our choice again. Great value for the money you pay!

I am just getting back from a three month stay at Surfbreak Cabarete i spent with my girlfriend. I have nothing but positive things to say about the place. The atmosphere and location are fantastic. Everyday of the trip we woke up to the sound of birds in the morning in a completely natural environment surrounded by palm trees and flowers. Then we would go to playa encuentro which is only a 5 minutes walk away and surf all morning. Playa encuentro has surf breaks for all levels of surfers! This is perfect because my girlfriend could practice surfing at the easier waves while I surfed the advanced breaks only a 2 minute walk away.

In the afternoons we would learn to kite surf in the town of cabarete which is an easy 5 minute drive away. In between surfing and kitesurfing, we enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of surfbreak and the great company of the dogs and other guests at the lodge.

We found it perfect to stay outside of the busy town of Cabarete and in the quiet neighborhood of Surfbreak Lodge with easy access to surfing and the beautiful beach.

As for the rooms, they are basic, but have everything you need. They are a great deal for the price and very clean.

my boyfriend and i stayed with veronika for a week in september. we were looking for a low key place to stay and surf, away from the touristy part of cabarete, and we couldn't have been happier with surf break cabarete!

we stayed in one of the studios of the 'lodge' part of the property. the studio was chic, comfortable, spacious, and the property, green, luscious, peaceful - veronika's garden is absolutely gorgeous! coconuts, avocados, passion fruit, mangos, flowers all growing around the lovely pool, hammock, outdoor kitchen, and bbq hut. oh and the dogs are awesome, especially little gary!

with veronika's help, we got a really good deal on a scooter, which we took down to the beach at the crack of dawn every day (it's walking distance, but we wanted to save energy for longer sessions :) !). afterwards, we'd come back, crack open some fresh coconuts from veronika's garden, and chill by the pool (which felt like our own private pool), before taking the scooter to town (about 10-15 mins) for some good dominican food (i'd recommend the street where the hamburger place, los locos d'enfente, is - everything is super good and super cheap - rather than kite beach).

the best part of the trip was definitely veronika! she went out of her way to make us feel comfortable and make the most of our stay. i can't wait to go back and hang with her :)

[sorry for the belated review veronika, thank you for everything!!]

Room Tip: i really liked our studio - it was on the 2nd floor so it was super airy, and we had a sorta-balcony...

We stayed back in October 2013 and our focus was to surf and relax. You can do just that at Surf Break. Veronika is a lovely owner who has put a lot of work into these two heaven like properties. Beautiful lush green gardens, refreshing pools and simple and quaint rooms. We rented a moto, only recommended to those with actual experience driving them and in crazy traffic!! Not for beginners. It is easy to catch mototaxis and guaguas to and from Cabarete town. Usually allow yourself 30min, including 5 min walk to/from road and waiting for a ride-- part of the experience! Encuentro beach (for surfing, not kite) is a short, lovely 5 minute walk. All the basics are provided: kitchenettes, cozy rooms, lovely decor, showers, yes sometimes cold but in that humidity who wants a hot shower?! Mini fridge, outdoor deck seating, outdoors shower for after surfing. Everything we needed and the best part- the dogs!! We missed our dog back home so much that having Sunny, Lee and Garry greeting you when you came home was fabulous!

For us, it was the perfect spot.

If you are looking to be closer to Encuentro for the action, shopping and bars- stay in town. If you are an independent traveller, looking to be closer to the surf break and to relax- this place is for you. We felt like we were staying at a friends who gave us the key to her place, not a hotel, hostel or resort.

I stayed with my friend for 4 nights over New Years eve. The host is a very nice person and we enjoyed our stay. The place is beautiful and quiet with a nice pool. The "Encuentro Beach" is only a 5 minute walk away and a real insider tip. If you have a car, ging to Cabarete downtown is no problem at all, but also by Mototaxi its only a 5km ride.
There are several different room options in two separate estates. Unfortunately our apartment was not completely clean at arrival and had some sand in some corners. There was no soap in the bathroom. The hot water and gas supplies are very basic, but ok. All in all, these inconveniences where not too bad, so we would recommend the place anyhow. And the price is perfect for what you get!!

Stayed here during Christmas for a kitesurf holiday. Some pro's and cons:

+great location for wavesurfing
+nice garden and setup
+lovely owner

-location quite far from kitesurf spots, need transport to get there (and back!!)
-relative far from village, can't walk to do shopping and go for drinks and restaurants, always need a moto-taxi
-dogs are very present. If you don't like dogs, this is not your go-to spot.

+/- apartments are basic, do not expect too much luxury. With this mindset it's cool!

If you really in for a kitesurf holiday, go for a hotel/apt near kitebeach.

This place is amazing! Veronika the owner is so wonderful and helpful. Her artistic style is everywhere and the lush grounds immediately give a sense of peacefulness and Zen. It is only about 1/2 mile to the beach which is beautiful and mostly empty. I surfed at Encuernto beach which was windy, but fun.
