“Sun, Beach, All inclusive..low price”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

When you book through Sunwing, there is a bus waiting to pick you up and deliver you to your resort safely. At first the place made me a bit nervous, it is a bit run down, but the staff, beach, pools and beautiful weather made it a 5 star trip. I must say the room we had was large, very clean with comfortable beds, and a fridge, however there are no face cloths, hairdryer, clock, or phone, ..The beach was great and had a breeze so you could at least get out of the beautiful sunny heat. The pools (though 1 was closed for refinishing) were beautiful and used often as much needed break from the sun. The staff was AMAZING and very helpful, though very little english. The entertainment did play games in the day and a show in evening. Not a whole lot goes on at night, there are pool tables and a dart board (bring darts if your a serious player theirs are cheap and break easy) The power and water would flicker off couple times. The food was good, not a 5 star, but good, also you can bring food from the store in town or suggest something and they will try to prepare it for you. We didnt do ala cartes because the variety in the main dining room was good enough for us. If your looking for Sun beach pools and all the free booze you can drink while just laxing, this is the best place for your bucks.. I would go back..

Room Tip: A balcony facing the trees , just to get shade after a day of sunning

I had made a reservation for this place according to the location and the beautiful pictures. WELL .... let me say what a huge disappointment it was when I walked onto the property. The place is trash, worn and old fashioned looking. The staff was super unprofessional, dressed like they were going to hang out with friends and acting like uneducated street people. The grounds were not well kept, the room looked like something straight from 1983, and the bathroom had an inch of water all over the floor. I won't even go into detail about the type of people I saw staying there....trash would be an understatement. Needless to say, 10 minutes was too long to stay...I got a refund and left immediately. Never again

I had read the mixed reviews of this place and decided to give it a chance. I am American living in DR so I am used to things not being 5 star and thats fine. I was not expecting greatness. Just a relaxing place to lay by the beach and pool, shower, and sleep. I was able to do 1 out of those 3 with no difficulty... so its not all bad. The beach and pools are fine. Clean. Nice. Relatively quiet. No complaints. The water at the hotel was having some difficulties the entire time we were there. When we arrived at the front desk a girl came up and said her toilet wasnt working.... then we were taken to our room.. fine.. average. i checked the toilet to make sure it flushed.. it did. great. then we tried to turn on the AC.. didnt work. okay... then i checked the toilet again and it didnt work. and the water in the shower was very, very minimal. okay. so we went to the reception. they said they would fix everything.. great. they sent someone and he said well i cant fix the AC but the bathroom is fine. ok fine. we get back to our room. bathroom only works sometimes. so we sleep the first night no AC. but then the electricity goes out in the middle of the night... not their fault i suppose.. but without a fan i could not sleep. thats where i draw the line. i went to the front desk at 5:15 am (45 minutes after the electricity went out) and they said "yeah... we're gonna call someone now...".... ok electricity comes back on. next day they sent someone to fix the AC again.. still broken. then the water actually went out because of the electrical problem during the night. so even though we didnt have the all inclusive package, we got them to give us free drinks for the rest of our stay. and they changed our room to a MUCHHHH nicer room with AC.. water situation was still not ideal but i'm understanding.

Also, I got this hotel during a sale, so for what we were paying it wasnt the worst experience. but i would NOT recommend paying full price for this.

The woman in charge of house-keeping and maintenance and basically everything was very helpful. everyone else pretty useless.

Room Tip: check all appliances and faucets before accepting a room. they will move you if you dont like the ro...

This year we decided to spend a couple of days at beach hotel in Celuisma Cabarete.
Caberette is known for wind sport, and the International kite-surfing competition every year.
Celuisma is a full-service hotel, greatly respected for its ambiance and friendly staff.
Beautiful room and very clean... The view was spectacular from our balcony; we were looking right across the pool and had beautiful views of the sunrise.
The pool was always clean, next to the pool ocean view.
Food was ok,when you were hungry and I suppose that's all that matters!
You can always find something ...according to your food test.
This is really an ok place to stay if you plan on spending time outside for wind sport, and the kite-surfing.
The resort area was nice and clean and the staff was fun and energetic!

I have been travelling to this hotel for just over 2 years, 3 times a year and every time I fall in love with country more and the people.
everyone in the hotel I consider friends of mine, especially the animation team and the manager Fransiscoooo hahah
I had a moment of sadness at the hotel and everyone there was so supportive!
yes the hotel is quite and at the moment there isn't much going on, but you have to give it a chance. they do whatever you want, if your not happy they will do whatever they can to make sure you are. When the shows are they are good and they make do with what they have.
If you get to the know the loving kind people you will fall in love with the place and I cannot wait to go back.
I LOVE MY DOMINICAN HOME!! :D

This was our 5th time at Celuisma Cabarete. If you read my review from last year, you will know that although we love this place, we also had some concerns. If you haven't, I won't rehash that, you can read it for yourself. These concerns seem to be in the midst of being addressed now.

Let's move on to this year's stay.

First a quick statement - we will go back. It is still what we are personally looking for in a vacation stay. It may not be what you like so read this and other reviews.

Now let's get down to the nitty gritty.

I have read other reviews of this hotel. Some of the bad ones may have had a genuinely bad experience. I wasn't there. Some of them took place off season which I can't speak about since we are not there at that time. However - listen carefully people - many are from people who chose this property without doing due diligence and / or chose based on price alone. I used to do that before the days of the internet too. However, now there is no excuse for complaining about things that are plainly warned about on sites such as this one. This hotel is a wonderful experience for those that accept it's shortcomings. I'm also sure that it is a great disappointment for those that are expecting a 5 star property for 3 star prices.

Here is an honest look at what this hotel does and does not offer.

Staff
This is one of the biggest reasons we come here. These people are amazing. If you treat them as you would like to be treated, they will do anything in their power for you because quite simply - they want to. Some have been here for many years and other faces change. By the time we leave, we have enjoyed knowing them. We come to know more than their names. we learn about their families and we are even able to visit their homes on occasion.
The animation staff is not the same as when we first went to the hotel. But to quote a line from a famous movie "Change is good Donkey". We have come to love all at the hotel.
Just a comment on the new manager. At first he seemed a little distant. However, we came to realize that he has no English and after expressing ourselves in our limited Spanish, he warmed right up. By the time we left, he saw us off at the reception. He also had big shoes to fill in replacing Richard. I'm sure he was feeling a lot of pressure between that and having to manage a hotel that has had insufficient operating funds in recent years.

Location
3 KM east of Cabarete. It is on the beach. Another 3 KM on the beach or down a dirt road will get you to the mouth of a river where La Boca (the mouth) Bar is.
Be warned - if you are looking for action - you will not find it here. you must got to Cabarete or Puerto Plata.
The hotel is adjacent to another hotel complex which is now closed. Sad - but it means more beach for us. There is a little restaurant serving German food and ice cream, another little bar restaurant, a massage therapist, a tour operator and really not much else outside the hotel.

Rooms
We have always found them clean but aged. This year, we found that in our room at least, there was a new ceiling fan and faucets. I can't say for sure about other rooms but we did see plumbers carrying new faucets into other rooms.
The outside of the buildings were being freshly painted. Inside our had been touched up so there was no peeling paint.
The bed was comfortable.
These are not the room you will get in Canada. However they will compare with many other places in the world.
If you want to enjoy your stay, focus on the more important things than where you close your eyes at night.

Restaurants. We did not eat at the Windows or Thai restaurant this year. I imagine they are the same as last year. Read previous reviews. The main buffet has improved. We didn't have any problem with last year's food. this year there was a little more variety. The beef was always a gamble. Melt in your mouth one night and shoe leather another. The secret is to try a little piece and go back accordingly. As always in the Dominican Republic, pork and chicken are always good. Lot's of vegetables and of course rice cooked in various ways. To please the many German tourists, there were always potatoes.
Once again, the food is good but not stellar. We enjoy it because we don't expect it to be Haute Cuisine.

Moving around
You can walk on the beach to Cabarete in about 35 -50 minutes depending on your fitness level. The walk will take you past homes, condos and hotels. There are some obstacles here and there. In front of one place you will have to scoot across quickly depending on the tide and waves. Think of it as a video game if you must. If you make it without getting wet, then you move to the next level. If not; you will not shrink or dissolve but you will dry off in the Caribbean sun as you continue your trek. The only other serious obstacle is close to town. To prevent erosion, several properties have place large stones on the beach. You can negotiate these but exercise extreme caution. There is path created by tourists which will take you up and over. A short walk will get you to stairs that will lead to a street. walk a short way and you are at Janet's Grocery store on the main road. A better option we found is to walk through an undeveloped lot by the old radio towers to the main road. a very short walk then gets you to Janet's.
Next option is to take a tourist cab with the yellow sign on top. We found that to be pricey. It will be safer if you are out in the wee hours of the night though or if you don't want to share. You can asked to be dropped off and picked up at a predetermined time.
3rd option - take a Publicar. These are the public taxis with the blue signs on top. Much cheaper but be prepare to be squeezed in with others.
4th option - Gua Gua. These are the local buses. Some are larger but most are little minivans. they don't have seat belts or air bags but don't worry. There will often be so many people that you won't move around much in the rare case of an accident. Stand at the side of the road. They will probably see you before you see them. They will honk their horn. Simply hold out your hand and they will stop. Just sit where they tell you. You may not be able to see well once sitting, so if unsure, just tell the guy that hangs on to the side where you want to get off.
5th option. Moto. These are the motorbikes. Priced somewhere between the Gua Gua and Publicar. Even the locals will tell you that this is the most dangerous form of transportation.
6th option. Rent a motorbike or car. Check your insurance!! Only do this if you understand how the Dominicans drive. Rules of the road are only a suggestion. It seems hair raising, however unlike Canada where people would rather die than give up their place on the road, Dominican drivers would rather live. Therefore, they will brake or move over if their demise seems imminent.

Local People
I have read reviews which indicate a fear of being in an unfamiliar country and culture. This is understandable. However, from our experience in this country over the years, the people are friendly, hard working and honest. Anywhere you go in the world there will be bad people and unsafe places. Do not be afraid to move around in the country and to mingle with the locals. With an open mind, you will enrich your experience and have the time of your life.We have spent time in peoples homes and never have we been worried. On the other hand, exercise due caution. Ask where you shouldn't go and remember that at night, certain places can be dangerous. In other words, it is no different than it is here in Canada or anywhere else. Just learn the rules.

We have heard comments made about various fears tourists may have. Unfortunately, at times these comments have been made in front of local people who often do speak english. Please don't do that. It is insulting and prejudicial. Over the years, we have seen a little wariness and distrust develop in the Dominican people. This is understandable because of what they have been exposed to by some. However, give them a genuine smile, say hello and be friendly. You will see the facade melt away and the true Dominican will be revealed in all their glory.

We are hoping to return next year. Perhaps we will meet you too.
