Im going to break this down alot....
Overall we really enjoyed the hotel. We stayed for a long weekend May 4-7,2012. We traveled seperately arriving and departing at different times but had a block of rooms with 6 families (traveling for a wedding near by) all together ages 2-70+. we each had different rooms and needs, and issues and compliments. We had 2 adults and 7 year old

My immediate family stayed in the 4000 block, 3 rooms 2 on second floor and one on third. The rooms were basically right on the beach, two facing the "quiet pool" and one facing the entertainment and main pool.all of them had great views of the beach. I highly recommend facing away from main area as it is very noisy day and night. we had a disaster with our first room, major flooding coming from the ceiling of the bathroom (3rd floor )(had a ton of rain the week before and day before apparently), filled up the lights, beds and floors were soaked. But they moved us immediatly and i think we got a better deal because then we faced away from main area. a maid let us check out the new room first and we took it. got the room keys alittle later after we moved our stuff. 2 kind of hard but clean beds. bedding was alittle old but worked. AC worked, Fridge worked (but not well stocked, 2 bottles of water a day and nothing else), tv worked most of the time, not all. Never figured out how to get the safe to work.
CONS.....We had french sliding doors that opened wide but were WACKY! screens and locks were weird...dont think they were put on right., curtains wouldnt open or close all the way. little ants get into everything so keep food out of your room. Also BATHROOM.....clean but no toiletries, no bars of soap (was what we needed mostly). Also the shower is CRAZY.....it takes a bit to get used to and i think the staff sets it up so when you turn it on you get soaked till you figure it out. Its a rain shower, hand shower body spray system that is confusing. and just a shower stall..not bad but not great for kids. Sprayed water EVERYWHERE but i found a maid and had to get tons of towels to clean it up. after we figured it out it went better, just check knobs before you start it again just in case. couldnt use body spray system because the door leaked seals gone or bad. also shower was alittle grungy, looked slightly moldy but also corroded and shelf system there but it wasnt installed right so you couldnt use it and had to put toiletries on the floor.
other rooms seemed to fair better with their showers or shower seals so they didnt leak.
Toilet worked ok but seemed to fill the bowl with dirty/ slightly smelly water.......
Cleaned nicely every day and got extra water bottles when we asked staff. Also we used them to brush teeth just in case. I did wipe up the room with disinfectant wipes the first day but not after. (none of us got sick)
Grounds were excellent, nicely manicured, lots of great smelling flowers, things to look at, turtles were cute.
food was decent when we ate there (spent alot of time elsewhere due to wedding stuff) didnt eat al la carte so cant comment. one complaint was coffee was early but cappuchino wasnt ready until 8am (we were up early to take advantage of the short trip) but there was a decent amount of food choices (not overwhelming).
Mixed drinks were good and didnt skimp on alcohol.
Pools were cleaned daily, wasnt too busy and because they were so close to the beach it was easy to go back and forth. also easy to get food. This place is pretty compact so it doesnt take long to get from reception to the beach and everywhere in between.
Spa....almost used but didnt so no comment there, but another party member did and said they did excellent styling her hair( flat iron and blow out is what they do best) and she looked great.
Did some tours on our own (which was cheaper that way but we had our own transportation...do the tours if you dont) Ill describe under my other reviews.....but definiatly go to monkey jungle and ziplines.
Beach.....Very close, soft sand, large area to spread out, there are waves but not huge and they were fun. no need to "claim" your chairs early there seemed to be open ones all day, can walk about a mile in either direction it seemed without a problem. Vendors were a little irritating... more so than any other place ive been to here. they just kept comming. Also the palm / shade area was a little cramped, there was room to spread out but chairs always seemed compacted into one area. Just drag them around
Staff was fairly friendly. As i have said in the past a few words of praise in spanish will go a long way. as will some tips. Bring alot of singles and small bills and cash in general, they accept US Cash. but you will get pesos in change (and never seem to have enough to break even a 20 dollar bill).
Did not have the chance to walk around outside the immediate area. This is about 30 minutes from airport (35 dollars for taxi)
visited the cabarete area (other family staying at sea horse ranch....I highly recommend that also)
Wireless free(SCORE) but had to use in the main lobby area and had seemed to be kicked off alot (30 minute limit i think) plus a little slow. Downside....not in rooms, lobby is right on main street and open so its a little noisy and there was a sewage smell there. not sure if it was from all the rain.....
checked out the "castle" resturant thing.....ill review elsewhere. wasnt impressed by service food was ok.... someone else may have had a better meal but i dont recommend.... was a neat house and view though....
Overall a great resort all inclusive, good size, all the ammenities and a few minute ride and youre away from everything.

Room Tip: rooms facing away from main area......on beach are best.

Spent a very enjoyable week here April 16th-23rd, yes, rooms are a little outdated, but if there is a problem, they are very attentive.
Great service at the bars and buffet, food was very good at all times. Most enjoyable was the fact that you can walk into Cabarete, and also west along the beach for miles. Nightly entertainment was fun as well. No complaints, solid resort for the money.

Room Tip: Try to get a room which is not above the buffet/disco.

Returned home on the 26th after a seven night stay. First off I certainly wouldn't classify this resort as 4* only 3* for the following reasons: No live music, no coffee maker in the room and the fact that the rooms are a little old looking. The food was good but not 4*.

Good Points:
The buffet's were not bad as I always found something good to eat but nothing spectacular. No seafood other than fish (the fish was good) but no lobster, shrimp etc. If anyone thinks the food was bad make sure you don't go to Cuba you would probably starve there. No tummy troubles for husband or I.

Bar service was prompt but that may be because the resort was half empty which I prefer anyways. The drinks were good especially the cappacino & presidente beer. I'm not into the fancy drinks and always try only a few coconut drinks. The service in the buffet was excellent beer, wine & coffee quickly brought promptly. My husband tells me the red wine was pretty good. All the servers we encountered were cheerful and polite and we willingly left a buck or so on the table.

The room we had was extremely clean, air conditioning worked great, fridge cold and always had hot water. Kinda wish more than 2 bottles of water left in the fridge as I can drink both myself in one evening. Our room was 2210 back door faced the tennis court but the front had beautiful view of the mature palm trees. The ceilings were not kidding 40 feet high so if you don't mind walking up two flights of circular stairs I would recommend this room. We didn't feel the need to pay extra for ocean view as we were very rarely in our room. Our maid did a wonderful job every day even the day I didn't leave a tip. Beautiful towel arrangements & flowers everywhere. No bugs!

We ate a few times off the resort, Pappy's on the Beach (great) and a lovely afternoon at La Boca (fabulous). Take a cab to La Boca don't be shocked by the potholes in the road and enjoy
true Dominican seafood, go into the camp kitchen and pick watch you like all freshly caught. I guess we were lucky that we have friends that spend their winters in Cabarete and they took us to fun places. Watched the sunset at Valero, great live music and drinks at Cabaha just a 10 minute walk down the beach.

In all we had a great time as it doesn't bother us that Dominicans will try to sell you stuff on the beach, if you are polite and say No they are fine and will move on. I think because we do make an effort to be polite that they appreciate being treated as they consider sales their profession. We always try to remember it is their beach not ours.

We havn't been to the Dominican in 25 years, spent our honeymoon in Puerto Plata back in the day when you stepped out of the resort and 30 people would swarm you. I'm happy to see a considerable improvement over these years.

We returned from our trip on 4/25/2012, instead of the scheduled return date of 4/29/2012. 4 days earlier than scheduled.

Our hotel did not provide us with adequate, basic services that would certainly be expected. Our 1st room did not have working air conditioning, and woke up the next morning with ants all over the sink and our personal effects, and other small, fast moving bugs that I could not determine what they were, all over our luggage and belongings.
We complained and were moved to another room, which they then proceeded to ask for more money because it had a better view. This room, after staying 1 night, did not have working hot water or a working refrigerator. I went to the front desk to let them know, and they said they would get it fixed right away.

2nd day in this room.....still no hot water and working refrigerator....I went to front desk again to complain...this time they said they are aware of the hot water issue, and were working on it as we speak. Promised a new refrigerator again.

3rd day in room, still no hot water and no working refrigerator. I went and complained again....and again they offered to have us move to another room, and again asked for more money because this room was better than the last. They asked for cash payment only because they could not run it through their system...because the boss would be mad with the amount of complaints we had with our rooms.

We left the resort disgusted with the service, and apparent sneaky cash transactions from the staff, which led me to believe they were simply pocketing our money.

We paid a $170.00 change fee from American Airlines in order to get out of there. They would not even let us use their internet for free in order to book a different flight, and were charging $1.00 per minute to use their phone.
The beach in very nice, BUT pick another resort!!!!!!

We own a time share with the Viva/Wyndham resorts and have been to all of them with our recent visit to Cabarete, DR. The Hotel is ok, nicely laid out we had an OUTSTANDING room. It was big, clean and had the best view possible.
It lacked live entertainment in the evening, which most of there other resorts have. The buffet was average, and the food quality was good. They had plenty of options for snacks as well. The 2 A-La -Cart restaurants Mexican & Italian were ok, the latter much better. They also have a separate restaurant that is not included on site. The food is excellent and for $60/ couple we had 4 star dinner!
The beach was fantastic! If you enjoy walking on the beach, this is for you. We never found the end! LOL You have to get beyond the windy conditions that are pervasive in the afternoon. It is the Kite-boarding capital of the Caribbean. Seeing this for the 1st time was quite the experience and worth the trip there just for that. The hidden gem is the beach front town of Cabarete 3/4 mile down the beach. They offer great shopping and the ultimate in beach dinning. Great food and low prices make this a place to visit. Try Papi's on the beach (get the shrimp) best I have EVER had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: We bring 100 - 1 dollar bills for tips and shopping. It makes dickering easier.

Do not listen to the bad reviews.
My family and I stayed at Viva Wyndham Tangerine for 2 weeks (March 16-31 of 2012). We got 2 rooms, and expected the room for two people to have two beds, but instead, it had a bed for two people. I shared that room with my 16 year old daughter, and wasn't too happy that we had to share a bed. However, the rooms were very clean and big. We needed them to fix the sink and air conditioning. Those problems were fixed almost instantaneously.
The maid left one water bottle for each person, which was sufficient as we were only in our rooms at night. We got as much water as we needed at the buffet and the bar. The maid was very nice, and when we asked her to bring a bottle of coca cola and a bottle of sprite, she put it in our fridge the following morning and every morning after that.
The bar had alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.
The buffet had a great variety to choose from. There were always fresh fruit. They didn't have watermelon for the first couple days that we were there, but once they got them, they had fresh watermelon everyday. They always had pork, beef & fish and usually had chicken. They changed the way they prepared the meat every night. The red wine is very delicious, and my husband said the beer tasted good.
We went to the Italian a la carte once, but decided to go to the buffet every night instead because at the buffet, we could get what we want at any given moment, and we didn't have to wait for the food to be prepared. The Italian a la carte was nice, though, and the food was well done. The service is excellent.
The Italian a la carte is turned into a 24 hour buffet whenever it's not the a la carte restaurant. The pizza the 24 hour buffet has is the best pizza I've ever eaten.
The animation team (the entertainers) work all day. Throughout the day, they ran a few games. We played mini golf, bingo and also, there were dance lessons. Earlier in the day, the have spanish lessons and water aerobics in the pool. They are the friendliest bunch I have ever met. They will come up to you and start talking to you or entertaining you. A couple of them kept asking my daughter for her ipod, and when she gave it to them, they would stick the heard phones in their ears and start dancing to the music. Every night, they put on a new show. I was told by their boss that they learn the routines to 21 different shows. If you eat breakfast/lunch/dinner at the same time as they do, sometimes they sit with you while you eat. After the show, they go to the bar and speak with people until the disco opens.
The disco is underground. Because of that, you can sleep without hearing the music. You have to be 16 or older to get in, but if your kid is younger but looks 16, they can get away with it. Inside the disco, white glows because of the black light. There is also a bar down there, which you need if you're dancing because it gets really hot even though at first, you walk down there and you're cold.
We went to Ocean World and did the dolphin encounter. We booked it with the hotel instead of one of the venders at the beach because, even though they offer lower prices, we aren't sure if it's safe to go with them or not. The dolphin encounter was half an hour. We got to feed the dolphin fish, pet him, dance with him, kiss him, and hug him. He also splashed us quite a bit. The photographer took wonderful pictures. Pictures are expensive, so we bought the video of the encounter instead. For the encounter, they make you take off your jewelry, and your hair has to be down. Getting to Ocean World should've taken 30-45 minutes, but it took an hour there and back because the guys who drove us drove slowly. We did the dolphin encounter in the morning, and then we went snorkeling. After snorkeling, we got changed and went to watch the shows and eat lunch.
The venders are absolutely everywhere on the beach, and they won't leave you alone. We were told to just tell them "no" instead of "maybe later" because they will come back to you every minute if you give them the answer "maybe." There was one woman who came to my daughter everyday to ask if she wanted her hair braided, even though we told her no from the beginning.
The beach is lovely with yellow sand. There aren't many kids at the resort because of the waves. Usually, the yellow flag was up, but at one point, they put on the red flag and had it on for over a week. The waves do get really strong, and you do go under them enough, but if you swim out with the boogie board, the waves will just lift you up and down and you'll be fine. Getting in and out of the water was the hard part. Every day, because of the strong winds, there have been many wind-surfers and kite-surfers. We took a ride on the catamaran.
The weather was nice most days; however, we did have some awful days there. During the first week, we had a terrible storm. There was lightning & thunder, and the rain was coming down all day. Just walking under the rain for a second, we'd get soaked. The day after that, it wasn't too hot out, but it wasn't raining. Sometimes throughout the day, it was drizzle for about 10 minutes and then stop. It rained pretty hard most nights, but that wasn't a problem because we'd be watching the show or we'd be talking with people at the bar. The beach had a lot of chairs available in the morning, and the trees offered plenty of shade.
The resort itself is pretty small, but that's a good thing. It took maybe 5 minutes to walk from the beach to the reception. At some big resorts, we'd talk to people once and then never see them again. At this resort, we'd see the same people everyday.
I never went to the spa, but I did go to the gym once. Their gym is very big with well working equipment.
There is free wifi in the reception and in the lobby. If you have something to connect to it (such as phone, laptop, ipod touch, etc.) then it's free. If not, you can use the computers upstairs, but I think you have to pay for those. We did lose internet every once in a while on my daughter's ipod, but for hte most part, it worked fine. It's too slow to watch youtube videos though.
Most of our days went like this: wake up between 8:30-9:00, get changed, went to eat breakfast and then went to the beach. We stayed at the beach until about 2pm to go eat lunch, and then we'd go back to the beach until about 4pm because mini golf started. at 4:30 (once mini golf finished), we'd play bingo. At 5pm (when bingo finished), they had dance lessons for half an hour. After that, we'd go back to the beach for about half an hour because 6pm is the latest you can return the beach towels. Also, you can only get one beach towel per person a day, so we never returned them until about 6pm. After the beach, we'd go to our rooms to take showers and get ready for the evening. Once we're ready, we'd go eat dinner and then head to the bar and talk with people or play cards. At around 9pm, we'd go sit in the theater to make sure we have first row seats. At 9:15, we'd watch the kid shows and then at 9:45, the actual show would start. The show ends at about 11pm. After the show, we'd go to the bar until the disco opens. We were never bored.
This resort is 20km from the airport.
It was a terrific vacation and I'd go back in a heartbeat.
