“Little gem of a resort”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

I've been to Viva Wyndham Cabarete twice. It's not SUPER fancy, so if you are fussy about decor, then you may be a little dissapointed. This place has everything you need. The food is varied, the staff are friendly and nice, the rooms are clean, the grounds are kept very well, I felt safe, the beach is beautiful. The resort is a good size (Not too big) and we never had trouble getting a beach chair (providing you don't show up at early afternoon when the beach is at it's busiest).

The resort is close to town (a short walk) either from the beach ( nice walk...lots of restaurant on the beach) or from the street.
There is great kite surfing to be had... Cabarete is known for it! Surfing as well. Just be careful when entering the water...the surf breaks close to shore: Hold on to your bikini!
The a la carte restaurants are also quite good.
Always had a great time there!

First the bad. The food was not very good. And too many smokers! Europeans have not got the word yet about the hazards of smoking. About 80% of the people staying at the hotel were non-USA and everyone of them smoked!

Now the good. Great drinks, adequate fitness facility and in-room safes. After that, everything is a bonus.

The security was very good. No one was allowed on the property unless they were staying there. You had to pay a visitation privledge if you wanted to bring a guest onto the property.

We just came back from Tangerine 8/28/2013 ..It was ok .the lady who cleans was excellent, but for some reason the room smells . We have problems with TV and refrigerate but soon as we called they fix it immediately. Food was ok ...Italian restaurant was the best but you have to make reservations to go there .1 or 2 times in week. We stayed 12 days ,everyday had waves but it was ok for us . Front desk amazing people .Shows are something you don't want to miss, great . We booked the trip to Paradise Island it was worthy every penny ,the view the trip itself and snorkeling was amazing .....
The beach itself was beautiful but they have to do something with that dogs there.I wish the people who were allowed to sell there NOT to be there or change the way the sell . .If you buy something from somebody the other one comes and say why you bought from him ? i came yesterday to you and i show you my number ...Kind of scary . Soon as we go to the beach they follow you, not 1 or 2 but 4,5,6 of them and they don't move until you ignore them .That was to much . i remember one day i went to get some drink inside and one of them said to me Can you please bring something for me to drink? Then you have some of them who stayed in front of you for no reason for maybe 10-15 min .I did not feel comfortable.
Will I go again in Tangerine ? Yes I will .

Thank your for recommending us.

Thank you for you positive comments about your stay in our Viva Wyndham Tangerine, We are pleased we could meet your expectation.

We are deeply sorry if the beach vendors almost spoilt you holidays; unfortunately there is an association of art vendors, managed independent, and they sell around Cabarete’s Beach area and as the beach is public we can’t do much about it. However we thank you for your comments and we will keep trying with the local authority to see how we can stop this situation.

Thank you again for sharing you experience with us. And hope to see you soon in our Viva Wyndham Tangerine.

Just finishing up a week of stay at Viva Tangerine. I definitely have a hard time understanding the negative reviews! I've travelled much and can definitely say this hotel fares pretty well with other resorts in its class.

This is a 3.5 star resort with a medium size property so don't compare it to huge 4-5 star resorts!

Nice resort, beautiful grounds, decent beach with palm trees, nice waves, murky water with sandy ocean floor. My first room was sketchy but asked to changed and next one was decent. Hard bed, cold AC and always hot water. Food was good! Some staff are great, some less but I'd still say they get their jobs done! A simple smile, greeting guests and a happy attitude could definitely help with the experience at this resort!

All in all, I was pleased with it and would recommend friends to stay here. Just keep in mind the hotel rating and the size of the property and it should turn into a pleasurable experience!

Viva, fix your constantly running toilets and urinals. Lots of wasted water!

We stayed in an Oceanfront suite at the Viva Tangerine so we'd have some more space with the kids, and had an enjoyable weeks vacation, in a bit more detail;

Checkin - Advertised as 3PM, our flight came in early so we were at the hotel before 11AM and had no problem waiting, we arrived on a Sunday which is I guess checkout day for the local weekend trippers. Walked town, had lunch and waited by the pool which was fine, come 3PM no room, checked again at 3:30/4:00/4:30/5:00 and got the room before 5:30, at 3PM we were given the room number and apologies it wasn't ready, around 4:30PM we could still see the outgoing guests sitting on the balcony drinking - FRUSTRATING!!! Not the fault of the hotel however surely they could have sent someone down to get the guests moving...

Location - Good location in Cabarete, probably a 5 minute walk from the main part of town, taxi's motorbikes etc. plentiful for transportatation and the beach out the front was good.

Rooms - Only frustration was that the showers were always cold, not too important given the climate however nice to have a warm/shower on occasion. I was going to complain after day 1 thinking it might have been a problem with our room however other guests reported same thing AND on 2 of the 7 days it actually was hot at one stage in the afternoon. We were in the main building on the corner, so loud music from the shows 10-11PM and you could faintly hear the disco from 11PM onwards.

Food - Simple and adequate, our expectations weren't high as we knew this was a budget all inclusive, so probably exceeded our expectations and there was always something to eat and a different theme every night so there was a bit of variety. The all day dining in the Italian server a very good pizza as well. Drinks - plentiful however not very strong...

Staff - Great

First off, let me start by saying, Te Amo Republica Dominicana. This is a country that you would want to visit at least once in your life. :)

We are two female friends in our early 20s who stayed at Viva between Aug 6-13 2013. First timers in an AI resort and the Caribbean in general. We wanted to travel on budget so we came to Viva Tangerine with no expectations. Even without previous experience with other resorts, I can tell that this is probably no more than a 3.5 resort. However it was the atmosphere that made our stay worthwhile.

Arrival: Puerto Plata airport is small but very clean. Porters notoriously offer to take your bags to the shuttles for tip so if you want to save your tipping cash for later, a polite “No gracias” will suffice. Travel from the airport to the hotel is roughly 30 mins (our shuttle was part of the AI package to and from the airport) and you will pass by a bit of Puerto Plata and Sosua before reaching the hotel. Check in was fairly easy – had no concerns, and our bellhop who took our bags to our room, Hector, was awesome! :)

Transportation: Shuttles are included in the fees for all out-of-resort excursions. We didn’t use taxi services (very pricey!) If you are a bit of a risk taker, take a motorcycle ride to Cabarete. It is also reachable by foot (approx 10 min walk). Dominicans drive like CRAZY. No one follows the road rules, so just take caution when crossing roads (not a good idea to be walking outside in the dark by yourself either).

Room: A little bit outdated; walls are peeling and bathroom only had shampoo and a bar of soap provided. We stayed in the main building so the food smell wafted up the corridors during dining hours. We had a garden view (didn’t bother upgrading) but our view was really just a wall. Our room was cleaned daily so it was always refreshing to come back from a day at the beach/pool to a clean room :) (gracias to our maid, Sara!) TV had mostly Spanish channels. You get a small fridge which is replenished with 2 bottles of water daily. Towels are few but can always be requested from guest services. Overall not the most esthetically-pleasing rooms, but we were there to enjoy outside and not stay indoors all day. :)

Weather: It rained almost every day while we were in DR; granted it was August and already hurricane season. But rains are tropical and last for only a couple of minutes. It was always very windy so it didn’t feel so humid, although the wind makes for very choppy waters in the sea (perfect for kite surfing though!) and sand was blowing all over the pool area.

Atmosphere: As we travelled during a fairly low season, we had no troubles with having to reserve chairs anytime during the day. My friend’s towel got stolen though, so that was a bit of a bummer. (Tip: Avoid leaving your towels on chairs on the edges – makes easy access for thieves :( Towels have to be returned by 6PM, otherwise you get charged, I believe $20? You also only get 1 a day – so take care of them! The pools fill with locals from Friday to Sunday, otherwise it is fairly quiet the rest of the week. This resort is very family friendly with lots of activities for kids. There were also a lot of couples/honeymooners staying in the resort while we were there. If you are looking for a party atmosphere, this resort will not be the best for you. We did not encounter many younger travelers, though the majority of the entertainment staff was in their 20/30s so we hung out with them quite a lot. :)

Vendors: There are LOTS of them on the beach. They were not allowed into the pool area so if you want to lounge undisturbed, I suggest you find yourself a chair by the pool instead. One mistake that we made is to buy from one of these vendor guys: we bought some jewelry from one of these vendors for 700 pesos (already haggled from his first offer 1000) which you can buy from Cabarete for 100 pesos. In short: do not buy anything from the vendors! They will rip you off immensely! Do your shopping in Cabarete instead. There are plenty of souvenir shops in the area. Haggling is culturally acceptable in DR.

Beach: Brown sand, no rocks/seaweed, water very choppy, not recommended for novice swimmers. Watching the kite surfers do their thing though is quite amazing!

Food: There is only one buffet, an Italian a la carte that serves as a snack bar as well and a Mexican a la carte. Plenty of choices for food, though they seem to stick with similar ingredients from day to day. You can only eat at the Italian and the Mexican once during your stay (I think twice if you stay for 2 weeks or longer). Overall food is good, can be better, some salty fish dishes but also some healthy options with soups and salads. There is also only one bar. We had no troubles with lining up and the drinks were okay (not much of a drinker so it didn’t really matter). Only one beer (El Presidente) on tap available. Shout out to Rolando, Junior and Freddy for the awesome service at the buffet! :)

Entertainment: I can’t say enough about the staff working here. They are the most hardworking people I know. Most of them are quite new, and it is evident during the shows. However, they also only get little to no sleep daily as they are in charge of all the games and activities around the pool during the day time. I’d like to give a special shout out to the Animation Team for their amazing work: Betty Boop, La Peke, Baby, Auri, Lalo, Sweety, Misael and the rest of the gang. You have become great friends of ours and we will never forget you. <3

Nightlife: After the 2 hr show every 9PM, the Animation Team encourages everyone to head over to the “disco” in the basement. It is stuffy and deserted during the week, but fills a little bit (mostly with locals) during the weekends. Limited music and not the best, but my friend and I still had fun. Onno’s Bar in Cabarete is the place to be on a Friday/Saturday night. It’s pretty small and crowded but the music is super awesome. There is also karaoke Mondays at this place called Voyvoy right beside Onno’s. Worth checking out.

Money: The only ATM nearby is at the gas station across the street from the resort. Most places accept USD and RD pesos. Personally, I think should’ve exchanged all my money in pesos. There is a currency exchange within the resort – do it here as the rates are better than outside.

Excursions: This was the highlight of our trip as the two of us were vacationing more for adventure rather than relaxation. Shoutout to Junior for helping us book excursions, also to Waskar from Ocean World for teaching us Spanish. :) We did the Monkey Jungle zip lining, VIP Paradise Island, horseback riding and snorkeling in Casa Marina. We booked the latter two with the Aqua Dive Center and the former two with the excursion table in the main building.

1) Monkey Jungle & Zip Line Adventures – This is a definite must. All profits from this excursion go to providing medical and dental needs to marginalized Dominican Republic and Haitians. It is a half a day excursion where you spend half of it zip lining and the other half visiting and feeding monkeys. A bit on the pricey side if booked from the resort (approx $90USD), but definitely worth it and it is for a good cause! :)

2) VIP Paradise Island – Full day excursion to the beautiful white sand beaches of Punta Rusia and Paradise Island. Chillin on a yacht, snorkeling, champagne, coconuts galore – totally worth it!

3) Horseback riding – spent an hour horseback riding along the Cabarete beach. Special thanks to Robbie for going out of his way to grab some coconuts for us and let us feed his horses. :)

4) Snorkeling at Casa Marina – breathtaking views of the sea; fed schools of fish – we went to Casa Marina to do this. This was a fairly short trip but also well worth it :) PS: Make sure you bring bread/bananas to feed the fish!

Departure: Again, no concerns, our agent from WestJet vacations gave us a reminder call the day before to remind us of departure time, etc which we truly appreciated.

Overall, it was a fantastic, unforgettable trip. Again, the hotel itself cannot boast the grandiose of a 5 star hotel, but if you would like to immerse yourself in the Dominican culture without leaving the comforts of an AI, this place is worth giving a chance. Sorry about the long novel, but I hope this review somewhat helps! Safe travels! :)

Room Tip: For convenience, rooms on the 3rd floor of the main building are good, but if you are looking for qu...

Pluses:
-Cheap, only all-inclusive hotel on the Cabarete Beach. Great location for kitesurfing if that's the purpose of your trip.

- Nice wide beach to walk on

Minuses:
- Food is tasteless, bland, very little variety
- Hotel beach is tiny with LOTS of locals bothering you on your holiday to sell their stuff. There is basically more locals than hotel guests on the beach. They are very persistent and it's hard to get rid of them
- Room - Basic and dark although we were in the Superior Room category.
- Staff are not trained on customer service

I would not recommend this hotel for a pleasant holiday, but if the primary purpose is kitesurfing this place is for you.
