Velero is a wonderful hotel! We stayed here April 20th through April 30th for our destination wedding and our guests stayed here as well. The rooms were comfortable, clean and the views are awesome! The hotel is very pretty ... lots of beautiful plants, wonderful pool, cabana beds, and the view can't be beat! You can walk to town from the hotel either on the road or on the beach and it's just minutes from all the action! Everyone at the hotel was wonderful and I highly recommend visiting the Velero. Thank you to all the staff at the front desk ... any question or need was responded to immediately. The front desk made all of our guests feel welcome. They have someone at the front of the hotel keeping a watchful eye on the hotel and there is someone by the beach making sure only hotel guests enter the Velero. Special thank you to Omar! You took great care of us ... from booking the trips for us, to keeping our leftover wedding alcohol cool, finding us a cooler for our extra beer, the list goes on... you're an awesome host! Thank you also to Ted, (hotel manager) you also took great care of our guests... thank you for the artwork... what a nice wedding gift! Thank you helping us with our friend and making sure everyone was comfortable. Thank you to Frank and Luigi in the bar... we enjoyed visiting with you and you guys took good care of us too ... can't beat poolside service! Also, thank you for getting my mother-in-law a birthday cake for her while we were there ... that was a great cake and she felt very special! Cabarete is a cool town and the hotel is the place to stay. This time of year was also a great time to visit ... the weather was perfect ... good temperature, no rain, few clouds. Thank you for making our special week so perfect! Please give Scooby a hug for us!

Room Tip: I would suggest getting a suite ... they're a little bigger and they have a kitchen. Janet'...

You will not find a better place anywhere in Cabarete period. The staff is great from the front desk, to the manager, to the bar and kitchen, security, maintenance....all are top notch. They all work very hard to do their jobs, and they all do them very well. Omar at the front desk helped with whatever we wanted, and I do mean whatever...Ted the manager couldn't have been more kind or generous...Luigi in the bar was very friendly and attentive...Rafael in maintenance helped with our safe immediately when it was broken and also helped with a friend that was handicapped...These are the few that really stood out but everyone else was just as great...As you can tell they really did feel like they were family by the end of the trip. The facility itself is very well maintained and has phenomenal views of the ocean. It is far enough away from the town that you don't have the constant noise of everything, but close enough that everything is still very, very convenient. (It's about a 3 minute walk to the town) Thanks to everyone at Valero for making our trip unforgettable!!!

what a great spot the Velero Beach Hotel is. Located in one of the best water sport locations anywhere this place is clean, safe, friendly and convenient. Fantastic views overlooking Caberete Bay make this place a great spot for a family retreat. The staff all go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. owners in residence make one feel welcome and seem genuinely interested in seeing that one enjoys all that Cabarete has to offer including recommendations on activities and dining
from a locals perspective. I highly recommend this property when considering a beach vacation
in Cabarete.

My husband and I spent a week here at one of the 1 bedroom apartments. The property is incredibly well-maintained, the front office staff is very nice and helpful. The apartment was nothing special but it was comfortable. The kitchen was well-stocked with dishes, pots and utensils (we cooked in several nights because the food in Cabarete is less than exciting, and all the same). The bed sheets were the lowest quality I've ever seen - maybe 50 count! The pillows were also the worst - flat hard pancakes or balls of foam. The bathroom was sufficient, nothing special. At 2am one night, the hot water pipe in the bathroom burst and flooded the entire apartment and the apartment next door. They couldn't locate a plumber, so after trying to fix it (ourselves, with duct tape), we spent the night in another room. The cleaning staff was phenomenal! They did such a nice job each day, always bringing in fresh flowers (and those silly towel shapes on your bed). The pool area is very beautiful, with an invisible edge. The on-site restaurant is very good and well-priced. You can't swim at the hotel's beach because of the strong tides. However, because the property is at the edge of the bay, it's not as windy as the rest of the beach. You have a phenomenal view of all the kite and wind surfers. One weird thing: the DR (sadly) has a lot of prostitutes, and practically on the property is a cafe that acts as a brothel. We had a drink there and didn't feel odd, but it did wear on you having to walk past it each day on your way back to the hotel. Rumor had it the owner of the hotel, Elvis, gets a kickback.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 2nd floor so you can leave your patio door open.

I spent 2 weeks in this beautiful place. The atmosphere is very peaceful and quiet, good for a nice relaxing vacation. The whole place is well maintained and very clean.

1)The rooms are big and cozy. The cleaning staff are doing a really good job every single day.
2) The staff both in the reception, restaurant and the security are helpful and friendly.
3) The pool area is nice, and even if there is no beach, the nearest beach is just 5 min walk.
4) Beautiful view from the hotel
5) The biggest supermarket in Cabarete is just near the hotel
6) The hotel has big canopy beds - which are nice to use after a long day in the sun

Negative: The breakfast is not for people on a diet. You have a menu of around 7 choices - that include different kinds of omelets, pancakes, cereal (with suger), bacon. My mom has diabetes so the breakfast was not for her. There is no buffet. You end up eating the same things every day if you are vegetarian (like I am). The breakfast is not good for your health at all!

A good option for people on a special diet would be to skip the breakfast and just buy it from the local supermarket instead.

But overall even with the unhealty breakfast the best "sun/beach/pool" hotel ive been to.

This is our 2nd stay at Velero. The food and location are fantastic and the apartment style rooms spacious but we noticed a few things this time which would be good to get sorted. The swimming pool still looks as though it is grimy on the surfaces, it didn't look as though it had been cleaned over the year. In addition, the increase in prostitutes going through the hotel or hanging out with their 'boyfriends' when you have children with you is less than desirable. The showers also need overhauling and the beds could benefit from toppers to take them from super firm to comfortable. Little things like no flowers on the beds this time made the visit that little less special. As ever the guys on reception are fantastic. The restaurant cooked us a local Dominican meal for our last night which was fabulously tasty, it would be great if they introduced similar options onto the menu as the quality of cooking is very good at Velero.
I am hoping that the new manager responds to these issues and restores Velero to the high quality place it so very nearly is.

Room Tip: We like the ones closest to the restaurant as you get a lovely sea view irrespective of which floor...

My wife and I stayed here March 29-April 5, 2013 as part of the Iguana Mama Mama Knows Best Eco-Adventure tour (see our separate highly recommended review of them on Tripadvisor). Now we know why Iguana Mama puts their guests up here for the week. Our room was a standard room with 1 queen/1 dbl bed. Unless you are a kite-boarder in which case the west side of Cabarete is best spot for you the Velero is in the perfect spot. It is situated right on the ocean and our first floor unit meant we were just steps from the ocean with great views right from our patio. Situated at the east end of town you have a complete and beautiful view of the entire Cabarete beach and all the kite-boarders in action on the west end. I did not see one piece of trash on the grounds! The on-property restaurant had decent food but it sits directly on the ocean. Nothing like breakfast with a fantastic view! The Velero's location is prime as it is 30 seconds from the bank (Banco Reserva) and a supermarket (Janet's). The front desk offered a convenient currency exchange service at $40 DR Peso's per USD. I had to use it on the days our activities had us depart/return outside of banking hours (9-4 local). On days I could I just went to the bank to get the full $40.65/USD rate. No biggie, that's only a $1.60 USD "fee" per $100 USD going through the front desk. Janet's gives you $40.80/USD when you shop there with USD:) This is a cash country. Very few places take credit cards but you can use it (or debit card) to get cash from the many atm's around town if you don't mind the fees. Can you tell I hate paying fees? The staff were very friendly and helpful. The Velero's resident pooch, Scooby, is getting on in age but was cute and grateful of the dog treats we brought along after hearing about him on Tripadvisor. Thanks Velero Beach Resort for giving us such a great stay!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Velero Beach Resort was the first luxury Cabarete hotel to be built and the visionary architect chose the best location on the entire beach to build. Our grounds are sheltered from the wind for the non-windsurfers, but 5 meters into the water the windsurfer or kiter will have access to the trade winds. Velero Beach Resort is the only one of the Cabarete hotels to have a small reef right out front that forms shallow tidal pools at low tide. These are perfect for the toddlers to play in protected from the waves. Our restaurant is also the only one in Cabarete that is directly on the water for perfect sunsets! ... more   less
