The Velero Beach Resort is a very nice place to stay. The apartment was clean and spacious with great facilities, and the restaurant, which was located by the sea, served deliocous food. The pool was nice and had an excellent view over the beach and the ocean. The hotel area was protected by security guards which made us feel safe and we didn't have to worry about thiefs. The staff was very service minded and they let us keep our apartment until 6 pm the day we checked out (our flight home was in the evening) which made it possible for us to enjoy our last day without any stress. Highly recommended!

Probably one of the nicest places to stay in Cabarete. The rooms are spacious, clean and the property is on the beach but at the far end, so away from the noise and activity. There is a nice, outside restaurant that serves great breakfasts and lunch and the property is very well maintained.

We have stayed at several places on the North Coast but we found Velero to be one of the best.

We were quite impressed with Velero. We spent the last week of May there for our honeymoon and feel it was the right choice. We definately got our money's worth and have little to no complaints. This hotel is the best in Cabarete for many reasons. ALL of the rooms are beach front. Not hang your head out the window and see part of the ocean - they are actual beach front rooms with balconies. The rooms are huge and clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We were particularly impressed with the beachfront resturant staff. They provided excellent service. The hotel manager even printed our return flight passes for us on his computer.

The only slight problem we ran into was with room cleaning. Our room was not turned over day 2 thru 4and we had to request service a few times. We don't know why this happened but it did not happen again the rest of the stay. The water cannot be drank as is usual in DR and the shower water smells a bit like a sewer, however, this is typical in many 3rd world countries. Just hold your breath. There isn't anything the hotel can do about this and it could very well be worse at other hotels. You really do get used to it. The water pressure was suprisingly good. The tub did not plug but that was probably for the best. THe rooms were VERY clean and the grounds were immaculate. They even picked up fallen leaves off the grass!

One of the reasons that Velero is preferable to other beach front hotels is because it is newer. The other reason is that it is built on a platform. This is important because you will find that there are A LOT of beach sellers that can be very aggressive (esp in the off season when we were there). The platform makes it harder for them to accost you. There is a security guard at velero that prevents them from coming into the resort. He will let them in if you want to buy something but he also keeps them at bay. After a day or so you get tired of people asking you if you want your hair braided or if you want to buy a coconut. There is a pool in front surrounded by chairs and canopy beds. It is a small 3 step stair to get to the beach. The water wasn't as clear or warm as some other islands i've been to but we still swam in it. There are LOTS of kite surfers and wind surfers and we had fun watching them. They really get going in the afternoon.

We ate breakfast and lunch at the resturant every day. The menu is simple but the service kept us coming back. We went for dinner at the other resturants in town. They all have great food at unbelieveable deals. We still can't get over how little we spent here.

I don't know that I'd go again because i like going to new places but if a group of friends wanted to go I'd suggest this place just based on value and price. It's great for couples and large groups. The only group i would not suggst is children. There aren't a lot of activities and the streets are not safe for small kids or babies. There are cars and motorbikes everywhere and seemingly no rules for the road.

Cabarete is not like other Carib islands where you are isolated from the people who live and work there. We loved it for that. The people were friendly but they also were out to make a living and walking on the street was an experience. Just be ready to defend yourself against harsh competition for sales. They will do anything to get you to buy something other than physically touch you. We never felt unsafe once but it can be a bit overwhelming for those who are expecting an isolated AI resort. Our only regret is that we didn't have the energy to do any tours.

All in all Velero is the place to stay!!! Feel free to message me with any questions :)

My husband and I were at Velero from the 15th of May for a week. We fell in love with the hotel, their staff and Caberete. We are already planning a return trip in August. The rooms are wonderful and spotless. The grounds are beautiful and the staff very helpful. I want to send a special thank you to Mario for all your help, without you we could not have completed the things we needed to do. :) We were in room 214 with a beautiful view of the ocean and pool. The beds were so comfortable and had plenty of great pillows to snuggle into each night. Breakfast was wonderful everyday. We actually had to fly into SDQ so it was a long drive for us to reach Caberete but thanks to Mario again he set us up with LG a wonderful man who made a very long day great for us. Thank you LG for getting up so early to take us back.

We stayed a week at the Velero beach resort and really loved the place. We had a junior suite and the resort is right on the beach, not back a block or two like many. This is on the eastern curve of the beach (I think) and the last one. Though I don't think it's affiliated with the hotel, the restaurant Toma la Luna is accessible from the lobby, or the road out front. This restaurant was absolutely the best. The staff are great and they had awesome mojito's. It's an easy stroll down the beach to some other great restaurants, we would also recommend Papi's. The food at Papi's was also great!

If it's your first time to the DR you'll probably fly into Puerto Plata airport (POP) and need to get a cab. Dont bother having some bring your luggage the few feet to the exit, unless you really can't manage it all. The price from POP to Cabarete was about $35US or $1100 Dominican in May 2009.

By the way, you REALLY don't need to change money in advance if you dont want to. I think EVERY place accepted US currency. Most restaurants put the total in US$, Euro and DR$.

We selected to stay at the Velero based on reviews posted on Trip Advisor and were extremely pleased with our choice. The photos on TripAdvisor and the hotel's website are 100% accurate. We stayed for 7 days/6 nights at the resort during the “low season.” Although it was just the two of us, we stayed in a deluxe suite which included a kitchen, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a huge living room and one large balcony.

We utilized the kitchen everyday for breakfast (the supermarket is about 150 yards away), and had a hotel chef come twice to prepare dinner for us in our room. This sounds indulgent but actually it’s a very good deal. For the two of us, the first dinner was $50 + tip, and the second which included salad, lobster, steak, vegetables, and dessert was only $60 + tip. Compared to what we paid at other restaurants along the beach, this was steal as we were able to enjoy the sunset from our balcony, and eat in peace without having to wave away vendors.

The hotel location is fabulous, right on the beach with a beautiful view, and near enough to the tourist area so that the restaurants, bars, and beach activities were a short walk down the beach, but far enough away to feel somewhat secluded. The grounds were well kept, pool was great, and hotel security was excellent. Since it was “low season” we had no difficulty finding a seat poolside or on one of the beach beds. The hotel’s position on the coast is perfect as it allows for a nice sea breeze most of the day, but was not windy, like “Kite Beach.”

The rooms were clean, air conditioning worked well, no power outages. Showers were lacking in the amount of spray, so “rinsing” took a little longer. Beds were on the harder side and pillows were a little flat, but looking at the experience as a whole, that’s nit-picking.

Liked: Beautiful location, price, personal chef, grounds, friendly staff

Disliked: Lack luster showers, hard beds

Highly recommend Velero Beach Resort!

Other places close by to eat/drink:
La Otra Cosa-next door to the Velero, fabulous food, excellent atmosphere
Café Piku- just down the beach a little, good drinks, good “dominican food,” relaxed atmosphere

Side note: Vendors
I think because we went to Caberete during the low season, and there were fewer tourists around, we received a lot more attention from vendors than other reviewers may have reported. A good tip is to walk on the beach rather than the street. We nicknamed walking the street as “the gauntlet” as the constant attention from vendors, shop owners, etc. was overwhelming. We received less attention walking on and eating at restaurants along the beach, but at one point we were hit by 5 vendors in a row, approximately 10 seconds apart (we timed it.) The usual was about 4 vendors each way from the hotel to the touristy beach area. It is true that most will leave you alone, after a polite, “no gracias,” but some are more persistent.

Velero Beach Resort was the first luxury Cabarete hotel to be built and the visionary architect chose the best location on the entire beach to build. Our grounds are sheltered from the wind for the non-windsurfers, but 5 meters into the water the windsurfer or kiter will have access to the trade winds. Velero Beach Resort is the only one of the Cabarete hotels to have a small reef right out front that forms shallow tidal pools at low tide.
