“A hidden gem for nature lovers”
Reviewed 3 April 2013

Just back from this incredible place and still full of vibrant memories we couldn't wait to share.

We (a family of 5, three teenagers) stayed for ten days at the "Bohio de Playa", the bi-level open air cabana(a bohio is a beach cabana usually made of palm fronds) which was the superb equivalent of "camping on the beach" with the added comfort of 24 hr manned security, Eco-conscious, minimally yet beautifully designed large bathroom, a full size refrigerator and the friendly service of the small but attentive staff who felt more like family after a few days at the hotel.
The main housekeeper/chef Milla went out of her way every day to make sure we get our breakfast the following day just the way we wanted it, despite the language barrier. The guards and managing staff spoke fluent French and English and usually there was no problem for anything to be delivered to us even late at night, if need be.
But the best part was that they left us alone - no one came nosing around and the rooms were cleaned every time we requested. It felt more like our own vacation home rather than a commercial enterprise.
This is why Bohio/Casa Maravilla is a hidden gem; a well kept secret tucked away on a private beach at the end of a gated community, neighboring another great Eco-hotel where like-minded people enjoy walks and horse rides along uninhabited beach paths, surfing, yoga, morning beach meditation and the like. Each night at Bohio de Playa we fell asleep under the palm-tree thatched roof listening to the shifting tides and when we had a few night thunderstorms the experience was pretty sublime...
One of the days we witnessed the local catch of fresh fish being brought into the kitchen and were able to buy the largest red snapper and then had it prepared for dinner in the kitchen by the cook. It was great; even better, we were able to use the kitchen and prepare a seviche which we shared with some new friends we made around the communal table.
For local flair and a varied dinner experience visiting the towns of Cabarete and Sosua is a must. We rented a car while there and each town is about 5 min away from the Casa Maravilla/Perla Marina community. Driving gets a bit crazy at night with motorbikes without lights buzzing around in the darkness, so extra caution is a good thing. Just assume that something might be in the middle of the road and be prepared.
Cabarete is a young -gypsy-kind-of-town in the best of sense! There are cool people from all over the world who seem to prefer the off-the-beaten path type of vacationing, mainly surfers(,the town is a top spot for wind surfing in the Western hemisphere!). Hands down the best place to have dinner is Alie's Surf Shack- the trouble is, it is hard to find - ask someone local for the way and you will be amazed. Best churrasco style beef fresh from the grill in minutes, not tho mention the langustas...
The town of Sosua is great for daytime people watching from the many open-air street bars but be careful there as the locals are definitely "dollar sign tuned". There is also the nearby tropical mountain in the town of Puerto Plata which is accessible by a lift and there is a botanical garden on the peak. If you do go avoid the "personal guide services" offered at the gate. Just buy your lift ticket and explore the gardens on your own.
Overall our experience staying at the Bohio De Playa was fantastic. The cabanas are a hidden treasure and as the ones who appreciate hidden treasures will know, luxury often dulls beauty. Luckily the owners at Casa Maravilla are balancing the two in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature of the island. We certainly hope that this will remain in the future as well.

My wife and I came here for a 5-day getaway from the NYC winter and overall we really enjoyed our stay. Our first impression upon arrival was very positive. However the longer we stayed the less we enjoyed it, as unfortunately this B&B has several serious flaws that should be considered before staying here.

But first the positives:
- It's a really beautiful and peaceful location, situated half way between the airport and Cabarete -- about 15 mins drive both ways. It is also directly located next door to the full service Natura Cabana, which means easy access to their great amenities including wifi, restaurants, bars, spa and yoga facilities.
- We stayed in Bungalow #3 which is the top-floor open air A-frame set-up that has wonderful beach views overlooking the nice pool and garden area. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to the waves crash on the little beach only steps away from our bedroom. The room is nicely appointed with a fridge and en-suite bathroom but is sparsely furnished.
- The Perla Marina gated community, inside which the B&B is located, is close enough to Cabarete and surrounding beaches yet far away enough to feel relaxed. We rented a scooter in Caberete on the first day for $20 a day, saving the $15 one-way cab ride and giving us flexibility to hit the great surf beach Encuentro located 5-minutes away.
- The $150 per night fee is a reasonable bargain considering it was during high season and compared to the prices in Cabarete which offer similar rates with fewer amenities. Natura Cabana by comparison was $180 per night.

The negatives, include:
- The plumbing and water situation is really horrible! At least on the top floor, the water pressure is so bad it's almost impossible to stand under the shower... We ended up having to dribble the water into our hands to get wet, lather up and then try to splash ourselves clean. And most times the hot water ran out, so having to have a cold shower at night after a long day on the beach only added insult to injury. For a supposed 3-star B&B and for the money we paid, the very least we expected was a reasonable warm shower.
- This is definitely NOT a full-service facility. Although we asked for service each day the best we got was having the bed made (only once in 5 days), and the room was never swept nor the trash removed. This was mostly an issue considering that as an Eco-lodge it required throwing away the toilet paper into the trash can.
- The breakfast offered each day was very average, consisting of basically a ham, cheese and egg sandwich with a bowl of fresh fruit. On our first night, we got suckered into agreeing to have a fresh fish dinner prepared for us by the staff. The meal was truly horrible and as we only learned days later that it cost us $60 (with out being told up font) we felt cheated. Better to eat next door for a three course meal and wine for about the same price, or eat on Encuentro surf beach for $10.
- This is definitely not in Caberete! We didnt mind the drive into town on a scooter, but if you're looking to be close to the action you shouldn't stay here. The biggest drag is having to drive back at night on poorly lit roads with very tricky traffic situation including vehicles without lights, animals on the road etc. And without your own wheels, relying on taxis at $30 round trip can get expensive quickly.

So all in all, I would recommend this only to couples looking for a very quiet, romantic, rustic weekend get-away. And having Spanish skills is a must as the staff don't speak English. It's a beautiful spot, with lots of charms. But it's certainly not the full package!

We rented out the entire property, including Casa Maravilla and el Bohio for a week in February. We were a group of family and friends, totaling 11. This property is perfect, steps away from a private beach, has a very nice pool and great lounging areas. The house is equipped with surfboards, snorkeling gear, boogie boards ect for some beach fun. We went to sleep to the sounds of the calm waves of the ocean every night. The property is also next to a nice restaurant at the Natura Cabanas, that also features a spa. Casa Maravilla/Bohio is an ideal spot to hang out with friends and family. We rented a car in Cabarete for a couple of days (about $40 US dollars a day) to visit some of the local attractions or to go into town (5 minute drive) for nightlife or restaurants. However, we rarely left the property since we didn't want to leave this little piece of heaven. As for management, I only have positive things to say about my experience. First, the owner was very attentive, accommodating and communicated with us throughout the process. We even skyped a week before we arrived! Once we got there, the house staff (cook, cleaner and security) was lovely and attended to our every little want and need. I highly recommend this property to families looking for a great vacation rental.
