This review is long overdue. I have stayed at the Palms apartment complex twice and I think it is one of the best values in Sosua. The Palms is a condo complex just outside the hustle of Sosua, yet still in walking distance or a short motoconcho ride.
The complex has a mix of owner occupied units, long term renters, and various short term renters from different rental and property management agencies. Sosua Vacation Rentals dot com owns a large number of the apartments and is the owner I rented from. Sonia, the manager of the condos owned by Sosua Vacation Rentals, is very helpful giving you a thorough introduction to the apartment, to the complex, and to Sosua upon your arrival.
There are one and two bedroom condos, an economy studio, and a deluxe studio. All are well appointed, with the studios including a small fridge, coffeemaker, toaster, and microwave, and basic cooking utensils, cable tv, electronic safe, and free wifi. The larger apartments have full sized kitchens. The economy studio has no A/C, but both a ceiling fan and a pedestal fan. The deluxe studio has A/C, and the one and two bedroom apartments have A/C as an option at an additional cost. I think this is a smart idea as for many, A/C is not necessary, except in the hottest months of the year. Electricity is very expensive in the DR so it is better to offer the client the option at an extra cost rather then offer it and raise the price on everybody. Although the prices for the condos have gone up recently, I still think they are a very good value in Sosua.
The location is, in my opinion, excellent. You are not too far from the center of Sosua, yet away from all the noise. Just take a quick walk down the hill to the main road and you have a number of transportation options. Guaguas and carros publicos will take you to points east (Cabarete) and west (Puerto Plata) for a very cheap rate. Just hold your hand out when you reach the main road and one will stop. A motoconcho will take you to the center of Sosua or the beach for 25 pesos. It is also not too far to walk.
There are rules for renters at the Palms, which is clearly explained to you on the website and before you arrive. They are reasonable and straightforward. For one, the Palms is an adults only condo. So no renters allowed with children. They also do not want a lot of noise and partying from the renters. For those coming to Sosua for more than the beaches (which is most visitors to Sosua, frankly), there is no problem bringing guest to your condo, as long as you are quiet. No parties or large groups of people. I would not hesitate staying at the Palms when in Sosua again.
