We are on holiday and have struggled to find somewhere in the area that serves anything other than “fish and chips”. The owner of our cottage recommended this place. We downloaded the menu and things were looking up! Tempting food that sounded lovely.

At first we sat down and were promptly ignored by several passing waiters etc. I asked at the bar where we ordered food and a very nice young lady informed me we should really have booked as they get very busy, especially at weekends. The restaurant looked empty to me! Once we were “on the radar” we were served promptly. We ordered starters of prawn/smoked salmon and creamed mushrooms.

The food arrived and looked appetising. Both starters were of the average standard “pub grub” standard, nothing special. The smoked salmon was interesting, it tasted like poached salmon and not the expensive smoked stuff you buy at the local deli.

The mains were fishcake and a bacon chop. The fishcake had the consistency of sawdust and unappetising to say the least. Just about mediocre pub grub standard. The bacon chop was burnt but the cook had craftily disguised the burnt bits by putting the unburnt side face up. Only when you ate it did the bitter taste of burnt meat assault your taste buds. I complained and to be fair a replacement was offered. Too little too late, any chef worth their salt would not let this go to a diner. Then the triple cooked chips were served soggy and lukewarm. Not the crisp outsides with a delicious fluffy middle we are used to.

When we left we were asked if everything was OK. No was the answer, burnt chop and soggy chips to say the least. No reduction in the bill and no proper apology offered.

If this is the best in “bistro pub” food the area has to offer then we will cook for ourselves. A truly shocking place and anyone who is looking for great pub food at reasonable prices would be advised to give this place a miss. I guess we were yet another pair of mug punters never to be seen again.

It gives me no pleasure to write snotty reviews on here but this place takes the biscuit in terms of poor standards of cooking.

Oh, the decor was nice and the drinks were cold.

There was a good selection of food and wine. I chose the brisket which was cooked to perfection with fresh tasty vegetables My wife tried the duck which can sometimes be dry, however the meat was moist and full of flavour. The wine - Malbec was light and was perfect for the chosen meals. The dining room was well furnished and comfortable and the service was excellent. I hope that we can return soon as this was a lovely meal I would recommend this venue to anyone who likes good food.

What a wonderful meal. Table for five for a fathers day meal. Service was excellent, we were shown straight to our table and drinks ordered, menus given for us to browse. Food was excellent, all freshly prepared. The Sunday dinner was great, as was the steak and ale pie, as well as the fishcakes. Would highly recommend and will definitely visit again.
