“Fabulous honeymoon”
Reviewed 22 June 2009

We stayed for 23 nights in the Jacuzzi pool villa. We have stayed in many luxurious resorts before throughout the Indian Ocean and Asia (we live in Hong Kong but are European), and this surpassed many. Very clean and tidy, excellent Thai architecture, and excellent fittings etc. Can't fault the layout. The owner has tremendous passion for his resort, and you can see that. He took a personal role and incredible pride in the landscaping and many other aspects of the resort.
Although you turn in from the road expecting that there could be some traffic noise penetrating the resort, because its built into its own little bay, you do not hear a thing (but we did take one of the 3 villas, and they tend to be in the best position).
Our villa was spacious, superbly well stocked, secluded from the people traffic (not that there was alot), 2 minibars (v.important - my wife is Danish and I am English/Indian... ), 2 TVs and DVDs, a separate lounge area and kitchen, and two terraces.
Though an island across the bay fronting the resort obscures the sunset, don't let this small issue inconvenience you, as some tend to write. Take a beer and sit in the jacuzzi and enjoy the change in light (dusk is a wonderful time of day). Nakamanda has a way of slowing down the passage of time, in which we place a high value.
Though English was a struggle for the staff, we did our best to find this charming - because they were making a tremendous effort to be understood. Perhaps because we were on our honeymoon and were staying longer than most (we arrived mid-Dec on 16th, and left mid-Jan 2009), even the owner made a special effort - even finding a particular floral arrangement on the terrace for my wife, because she happened to mention a favourite colour while she was painting on the terrace. I don't think that has happened before....
The staff were actually very, very attentive, and always maintained a happy demeanour. I know we always expect that in the best resorts, but somehow it felt very genuine and engaging.
The restaurant choice is a little limited, but its a short drive by taxi to wherever you want to get to. But the food that is served at the hotel is excellent. We had a special dinner on the beach front for both Xmas 2008 and New Year 2009 - excellent, fabulous, along with Chinese lantern ceremony on the beach which is very special to do with the one you love.
There are a few other bars and restaurants along the beach, but they are tucked out of view. We especially liked the Jamaica bar - with a real "Rastaman" owner. In view of the economic situation, we hope his business survived.
Some have written here about the beach being rocky etc. Yes, there are rocks, but that makes for a more distinct landscape than otherwise. Anyway, there are 2 longer sandy beaches close by, so if you want something else its easy to get to. There is also a larger hotel close-by (Sheraton or Hilton or something like that), so if you want to make noise and do some watersports etc. then its just a 10min walk along the beach - but you can't hear the riff-raff at night, trust me.
If you are the energetic type and want bars/restaurants nearby - don't go to Nakamanda. But if you value a place that has the ability to slow down time with some great spa treatments, then go for it. Yes, its not cheap - but what price would you put on your own health and well-being? I actually found it was difficult to readjust to work after this - but that was a very healthy experience. Life is important, so get a balance - and this place helps you achieve it (yes, yes, it was our honeymoon...).
And on a final note, on my departure I forgot my watch - and it was only a cheap Swatch, but they called us on the way to the airport, and an extra car was despatched to meet us. Excellent attentive staff...
Some time since we came back, but promised to do this - and the memory stays strong.
Raj and Lisa in Hong Kong.

Stayed at the Nakamanda for 4 days and had the BEST stay. Starting off, the views of the hotel are flat out amazing. Beautiful pool, beautiful ocean view, and the rooms are high up making them feel like treehouses. Rooms are separated from others, and the sunrises & sunsets are breathtaking since most of the rooms have 360 windows all around (with shades for privacy, of course). We had our own little outdoor couch/bed where we could be lazy all day long. We stayed for our honeymoon, and they had a very pretty presentation in the room with champagne. The bathroom is roomy, clean, and excellently maintained. There is a dressing area separate from the bedroom, and it is very comfortable to get ready. The in-hotel restaurant has beautiful views for a morning breakfast. Absolutely LOVED the service--you get waited on hand & foot even if you have the cheapest room. Loved the high-tide/low-tide experience because the water comes right up to the back of the hotel during high-tide, but during low-tide, you can walk soooo far. Rit, the concierge, was very helpful, and he even took us on a private drive through Surithani to get to our ferry to take us to Koh Samui, our next stop. Wonderful, wonderful, cannot say enough good things! The views on the ocean trips with the limestone cliffs are breathtaking, and it's so close to so many of the other areas like Railay without being overcrowded with people. Very quiet, and from the minute we got off of our plane in Krabi, we had the best treatment. Across the street, there is also a restaurant that was very good that was recommended to us by one of the people staying in the hotel, it's called The Coconut. Very good food, and great place to sit, relax, and have a beer.

A friend and I went to the Nakamanda for 4 nights and we were treated like royalty! We also arranged transfers and were met with cold towels and a bottle of water each in the car! Everytime you entered the hotel, you were always greeted with a cold drink and warm greeting.

We stayed in one of the villas and it was really comfortable..fab bed..a dressing area with separate sinks and a bath with a glass roof!

The pool and facilities were very good too.

The hotel arranged transport and a trip to Hong Island..highly recommended if you like snorkelling..

Breakfast was a delight..you could order anything off the menu..and we did! Never had lunch for the rest of the trip!

Outside the hotel was a lovely restaurant (Mother's Rest) and a lady that did Thai massages to die for.

All in all we had a fab time and both agreed it was one of the best holidays we've ever had.

The Nakamanda resort is a rather modern, elegant and exclusive resort, located in Klong Muang beach, 30 minutes by car from Ao Nang beach.

We stayed 4 nights in a jacuzzi villa that we booked directly with the resort.

On arrival, the check in was professional and we were welcomed with a fresh drink and a cold towel.

Then the chief concierge "Pit" took us to our villa while he provided us with different information about the resort. He was very professional.

The villa (with partial sea view which was the point that disapppointed me most) was very large for the 2 of us. One huge living room with a separate kitchen that we did not used, all glass walled, then a corridor with stairs down takes you to a large bedroom with lots of windows , a tv , dvd player (we did not used neither of these), a desk where I installed my laptop and a nice bathroom with lots of storage, indoor shower and separate large bath.

The difference between the jacuzzi villa and the sala villa is the size of the villa , and next the jacuzzi outside on the large private terrace.

I will start with the negative points :

Overall I was quiet disappointed about the lack of privacy of our villa. It was located next to the stairway which guests use to get down the beach , spa and restaurant ! It means that if you are laying down your sun beds on your terrace, or enjoying the jacuzzi with your partner, all other guests passing by can just see you.

Also other negative point is the number of villas that were built on a piece of land that somehow is not very large which result in a "compact " impression.

There is no real beach in front of the resort but only flat rocks which makes it difficult to swim. You have to walk 150/200 meters on either side to be able to go swim but not sun loungers there.
The view of the bay is obstructed by a small island just in front of the resort.

Positive points :

The level of service is high and on the professional side.
Staff are well trained , and reactive. Their level of english is rather good.
For exemple, a few things needed to be fixed in our villa and it was down within the next half an hour!
As I brought my laptop they knew I would need an internet connexion so they provided me with free login and password.
I also needed laundry to be done and clothes were returned to me in perfect conditions within less than 24 hours.

The Spa is good but not exceptionnal. We experienced it as we had a great promotion during our stay ,otherwise I would have gone to Ao Nang beach to get a massage or two.

The restaurants : one is beach side (where we had our breakfasts) the other one is near the pool with an inside dining room with A/C and outside on an upper terrace. We had 2 dinners there. Food and service were just great for a reasonable price in this standard of hotel.
Breakfasts were "à la carte" , no buffet, but it was plenty enough for us, fresh food, fresh juice, good coffee and tea.

The swimming pool is by the beach and a part of the sun loungers are pool side on the grass then you face the wall above the pool, the others on the artificial beach side then you face the sea. Beach boys are always there to bring you whatever you need, help you with towels, etc.
Gardens are well manucured and all the premises are very clean.

Overall the Nakamanda is a great resort more dedicated for couples. The resort was really quiet when we stayed there and it was appreciable.
The architecture and layout of the resort is not appreciated by everyone. It is true that the layout is rather compact and the architecture rather modern thai but the setting of the hotel on a small curved beach has its charm. Above all the level of professionalism and kindness of the staff is be taken into account and you'll be sure they'll make all efforts to fulfill all your needs if you choose to stay at Nakamanda resort.

We are an American couple living in Bangkok that wanted to spend a weekend away from all the hustle and bustle. For a relaxing, quiet, luxurious retreat with personalized, friendly service, Nakamanda is the way to go. This is a boutique hotel located in a secluded beach far away from the crowded, touristy, party-going atmosphere.

We were picked up at the airport by the hotel concierge and a driver and were provided cool towels and water for the ride. During the 45 minute ride to the hotel the concierge was very welcoming and spoke excellent English. She informed us about the various activities offered and we ended up booking a private speed boat tour for the next day. Upon our arrival, our bags were carried off and we sat in the open air lobby and were given welcome drinks as they collected and processed our passports, etc. Then, the concierge escorted us through the grounds and showed us to our room. It appeared that the natural landscape was minimally impacted when building the resort. There were plenty of trees about, birds chirping, frogs and geckos seen off the paths. The villas were nicely spaced out and blended well with the natural environment. In my opinion the grounds offered a more personalized, relaxing, and local feel versus a towering hotel with elevators and cookie-cutter rooms. As a result, expect a few extra stairs when walking across the resort - this did not bother us but might to other people (note that there are no ramps for wheelchair accessibility). The resort sits on a small bay that is filled with beautiful blue water during high tide that transforms to a muddy waterless pit during low tide. The pool, bar, and restaurant are positioned closest to the bay so that the view is enjoyed during high tide at breakfast and dinner. For clarification from other reviews, there is a stand alone bar near the beach side sitting area by the restaurant.

We chose the garden view sala villa and were pleasantly surprised with the accommodations. The room was large with a comfortable king sized bed, TV, and sitting area. The bathroom was huge with separate his and her sinks and ample closet space. There was a separate standing shower that is quite big, separate toilet, and a large bathtub for 2 under a skylight. The bathroom area also had some trickling ponds with plants in it and real fish swimming around. The entrance of the villa had a private terrace with a sitting area and day bed. Our villa was on the first floor and privacy could be an issue if the curtain were left up and someone walking by were purposefully trying to look in. We didn’t think it was a big deal and simply closed the curtains if needed.

The resort offered a wonderful buffet style breakfast located by the pool with tables closer to the beach as well. The had both western and Asian style food, plenty of fruit, pastries, meat, made to order eggs, and a la carte ordering. We always left breakfast full. The afternoon tea was in the lounge where they offered several types of tea and yummy cakes, cookies, and snacks. We could enjoy the outdoor seating or sit inside in the air conditioning and watch the big screen TV, read a magazine, or play games.

The service at Nakamanda was truly exception. The concierge was always greeting us by our names whenever she saw us and always asked how our day went or if we needed anything. We always saw her greeting other guests as well, playing with their kids, and making recommendations and arrangements. She was extremely helpful and friendly, yet not overbearing. During breakfast she showed us how to eat longan and we chatted about our previous night out and how we liked the local beer. She told us she would have an ice chest with ice ready for our beers for the boat tour. She also surprised us by adding a box full of longan since we enjoyed them so much at breakfast.

We did try out the spa facility and booked the sunburn relief therapy on our last day. This included a sit in the sauna, a light massage, and a cold body wrap of some cucumber mixture. I’m not sure how much it helped my sunburn, but the therapy was nice and relaxing.

The hotel provided us transportation to the nearby city of Ao Nang. They recommended a seafood restaurant and dropped us off at the place. It was a big place that offered lots of dishes. Everything we had was delicious. Later, we walked around, did some shopping and enjoyed the magnificent sunset over the water. For a cheap bar, start at the large seafood restaurant and walk on the beach-side sidewalk away from the bridge. There is a small stand-alone hut that serves cheap, yet strong drinks.

The private speed boat tour is a must do in Krabi, and it’s the only way to visit the Phi Phi islands (longboats are too slow). While it is a little expensive, it is well worth the splurge - after all isn’t the point of being in Krabi to check out the postcard-like islands in seclusion and not with a bunch of other tourists? After breakfast, our boat was waiting in the bay right by the hotel. It was a nicely sized and very modern speed boat complete with a driver and 2 helpers. We spent the entire day island hopping, snorkeling, laying on beaches, jumping cliffs, etc. If we thought an island was too crowded, we simply told the driver to move on until we found a more secluded spot. There were several times when we had an entire island to ourselves! We noticed that other boats were packed with tourists and had set stops for short periods of time. What a drag. Having your own private speed boat means going wherever you want and spending as much time as you want at each place. Again, I highly recommend booking this. The next day, we booked a private longboat and checked out the nearby islands, most notably Hong island. The cove at Hong island is beautiful but there were too many people there for our liking. We ended up going to a more quieter place for some relaxation. Later that day when we returned, the concierge recommended we walk along the beach to the Sheraton to watch the elephant bath in the ocean. 10 minutes later we were watching the elephant getting wet and playing with the tourists. Pretty neat.

We had dinner at the Nakamanda restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the set menu. While a bit overpriced, they served good (I wouldn’t say the best, but far from bad based on our experience living in Bangkok) Thai food, a decent wine list, and an interesting selection of desserts (the pumpkin with ice cream was great!). The atmosphere was great as we sat at beachside a candlelit table. Another dinner option is the grill. They have a display of freshly caught seafood where you can pick what you want and they will grill it right there on an open fire for you.

Overall, we loved staying at Nakamanda for it’s quiet seclusion and top notch service. We plan on making a repeat visits.

The headline covers it all. We stayed 5 nights at Nakamanda for our honeymoon and it was nothing short of a wow experience. Something about this place is so special that i find it hard to express in words, from the personalized top notch service, the beautiful scenery, the great food to the architecture and the ambiance everything is amazing!
We have stayed in our 3 weeks of honeymoon in 4 luxury resorts in the south of Thailand and no doubt that Nkamanda was one of the best if not the best we stayed in.
If I am really pushed against the wall and need to say something less good to make my review more reliable I would say that the location is not exactly lively and is 20 a min drive to the closest shopping area (wasn’t such a minus for our needs) and that in a room in this type of hotel I would expect a flat screen TV and not an old CRT, but seriously, I really needed to think hard to say something less then amazing on this place.
