We stayed at the Majestic Elegance from January 4-11. We had a group of 6....these are my thoughts on the experience.

We arrived around 230 on Sunday and were told that our rooms were not ready yet.......fair enough....we went and had some drinks for an hour while they worked on it. We were taken to our room which was 4117 (Garden view) and when we arrived we found that there were 2 beds instead of 1 and it was on the ground floor....both things we hadnt requested. Some other things that have been mentioned previously as well.....our light in the washroom was leaking water out of it even when the shower wasnt on, and the tv was mounted but EXTREMELY crooked....There were also several mosquitoes in there which i will talk about more later.

We phoned to get a different room and were very promptly moved to a room on the other side of the resort (1334) and everything was fine. The rooms look quite amazing when you first walk into them. They put a lot of thought and effort into selecting high quality finishings and pieces that look really nice. When you look closely though you start to see where having a 2* contractor (as stated in another review) building a 5* resort really hurts them. The showers are really nice, but they dont drain quickly enough and the lip on the shower isnt very large so they flood if you dont watch....lights are hung crooked....light switches broke when using them....we had the end of a pipe sticking down through the ceiling and into the room....all little things that take away from the beauty of what the room could be.

Anyways....through all of that we didnt really care because the only time we were in the room is to sleep right? Onto the grounds......STUNNING! From the moment you enter the property you are amazed. The lobby through the stairs down to the bar opening up to the pool and grounds is really something to see. Absolutely no complaints about the grounds or the beach......the beach had seaweed on it early in the morning but they were always working to clean it up, and that is all that you can really ask.

Food.....i have never been to the Dominican before so i dont have another resort there to compare to, but i wasnt blown away by the food. We didnt get sick, and there was nothing that was horrible, but nothing was amazing either. The steakhouse was good, Italian was not great, and the japanese was EXTREMELY salty due to the amount of soy sauce they seemed to use. The buffet was decent but the selections never seemed to change much...mostly the same every single day.

Service.....this is where i was really impressed. Everyone at the resort is very kind and always helpful. The service at this resort is the best ive experienced and will only get better as the resort matures more. A special thanks to Rose Maria at the pool side bar as she went above and beyond and truly out of her way to make sure we had a fantastic time everyday.

Mosquitoes.....i heard a lot of people talk about these in other reviews before we went. One of our group members had a room on the side with all of the trees and vegetation and had some in their room and we also experienced them during the shows (where you are also near the trees and vegetation side of the resort). They werent horrible, and those are the only places they seem to be a problem.

All in all we had a great time. Are there problems with this resort? You bet...its 2 months old! Its all about what you make of it, and we chose to focus on the good and had a great time with our friends.

The landscaping and architecture of the Majestic Elegance are beautiful, but like Paris Hilton, we soon discovered that the Elegance's exterior beauty served as a facade - an attempt to distract from the shoddy and rushed craftsmanship and disorganized management.

In short, nothing works and all the features promised on the website and in the brochures either don't exist or don't work. The staff tried VERY hard to accommodate and fix things, but they were overwhelmed with requests and had no support from their superiors. Most of them had not been properly trained in the job they were doing. At one point I was looking off the balcony and saw the maid take water from one of the mosquito infested fountains and use it to clean the floor of one of the rooms.

Upon arrival, we were escorted to our Elegance Club room sans our "refreshing towel and welcome cocktail" as described on the website. We had paid for an Ocean Front room, which was more like a Bushes-with-chain-link-fence-and-ocean-off-to-the-side View. The first feature was the Room Service Closet, which wouldn't open. The handle was broke. Then we tried the TV...also broken. Then the Balcony...but the door to that was broken as well. Jacuzzi...broken. Toilet seat...repeatedly fell off after you stood up, which we soon discovered was standard for ALL the toilet seats in the public bathrooms on the premise.
We reported the problems and we were told that someone would fix them by the time we got back from dinner. They didn't.

The next day we went down to the Elegance Club and spoke with Calix, who offer to switch us to a downgraded room, or to repair the problems in our current room. We chose to have the problems fixed over downgrading (with no compensation) to another room. Most of the problems were fixed by the time we returned from lunch. The room service door still didn't work, but we didn't really care. The next day the jacuzzi broke again, and was repaired within a few hours.

I won't bore you with the rest of the details of how things didn't work, but it was a consistent problem throughout the property. The place smelled like sewage and there were mosquitos EVERYWHERE.

The Majestic allows vendors to set up tables on their property, and it's impossible to get to the gym or the restaurants without going through this mini marketplace where you are mauled by the vendors to buy trinkets. In one of the stores we visited on the property, the owner asked us to use our bracelets to go get drinks for him and his staff.

The Spa and Casino were a joke. The Casino kept odd hours, with the tables only being open for 2-3 hours a night, and there were only 4 regular slot machines and about 15 video machines. The Casino staff seemed disgruntled and generally annoyed to be doing their job. I had a Manicure, Pedicure and Deep Tissue Massage at the spa. The massage was nice, but not the Deep Tissue Massage that I had paid for. The Mani/Pedi was just sad. They have no equipment and the tools they used were dirty and unsanitary. I don't think the woman who gave me the mani/pedi had had any training in the tasks she was performing.

The food was disgusting. With the exception of the Japanese Restaurant, all the restaurants/food tasted like it was canned or highly preserved. We ate at the Steak House and I ordered Creme Brulee and was given Vanilla Jello Pudding. No joke. At the Italian Restaurant I ordered the Tiramisu and instead was given Flan, which was this rubberized concoction that was completely inedible. I couldn't even get my spoon through it. The staff at a majority of these places had no clue how to wait on a table. At one point, I just got up and poured my own glass of wine after repeated asking the waiter for another and not getting it. We went to the Japanese Restaurant three nights in a row. The food there was excellent and the staff was very attentive and actually trained in the job they were doing.

THE POSITIVE:
The beach is absolutely beautiful with the softest sand I have ever set foot on. I have traveled to many places and this is by far the most beautiful beach I have ever seen.

Brenda, the monkey. The local zoo brings various critters to the resort and lets you play with them while getting your picture taken. Brenda was adorable. The one downside to this was the trainer hitting the monkey with his hat anytime she wasn't looking at the camera.

I'm not a snob. I don't need luxury, but I do believe in getting what you paid for, and the Majestic Elegance did not deliver the 5 star resort that they promised.

We stayed at the resort from January 4th - 11th, attending my boyfriends sisters wedding (the first one at the resort!) on the 10th. Overall we had a great time! The resort is beautiful, rooms are huge, beds are so comfortable, staff for the most part was really nice. The only problem we had with our room was our tv kept going out and you would have to call 5 times to get them to finally come fix it but other then that we had no problem with our room at all. There were 40 other people staying at the resort for the wedding and some people had to change rooms right away because of minor problems but once that was taken care of everyone loved their rooms. The beach was nice, it was busy but we never had a problem finding chairs near the beach or pool. The bars were awesome..there were lots or bars with premium alcohol and great drinks...pretty much anything you wanted. William at the main lobby bar was amazing...always took good care of us and suggested some great drinks. The rehearsal dinner was held at the steakhouse in a semi-private area and was really good, we had ate at the steakhouse earlier in the week and weren't impressed but the rehearsal dinner was very good...the wedding was held on the gazebo, gorgeous!! Reception was held outside near pool bar (they set up tables, buffet, dj, etc..it looked really nice!) and the food was really good as well..great selection... then we moved onto the lobby bar and disco. There were however some issues with the wedding coordinator not being very friendly or helpful. Also, the bride and groom had to fight to get their room upgraded even though they brought 40 people to the hotel. Overall..the wedding was so pretty, the food was great and we all had a good time!

Things we didn't enjoy:
-The food was really hit or miss...the buffet was usually better then the a la carte restaurants unfortunately...the Japanese was the best followed by the steakhouse..don't waste your time at the others..you get a better pasta from the buffet then at the Italian. The food was definitely not 5 star quality.
- i was eaten alive by mosquitos
-our tv in the room kept going out
-our camera was stolen out of the disco on our last night there...partly our own fault as we left it on a table right beside were we were dancing but there were 20 people we were with around this table and we were using it to put our drinks on, etc so someone must have swiped it really fast for noone to notice...huge disappointment, I'm still upset :(

Don't get me wrong, there are little issues with the hotel being new and typical hotel problems but we had a great time, aren't that picky and didn't let the small stuff bother us. There were alot of people there complaining so maybe we lucked out with our rooms but overall it was great!!!

The worst resort I have ever stayed in. So many things went wrong so quickly. Checking was a torture --- and we did not get a room we paid for for three days. Were shuffled back and forth a few times due to mosquito infestation (got eaten alive by them) and the horrible mildew smell in the rooms. Got a severe gastrointestinal disorder from the food. It is being handled horribly --- with bare hands, which I suspect are not very clean. All in all, could not get out of there sooner due to the New Year's all booked up airlines' status and ended up there for a week -- a most miserable week of my life. Stay away!!!

Stayed at the Majestic Elegance from Dec. 26/08 to Jan. 2/09. The block of rooms we stayed in (Rm. 2240) were closest to the beach, not counting the Elegance Club. We had a great view being on the top floor. Many of the rooms weren't ready. We had nothing but problems with our room, but the resort was beautiful. Some days, no hot water, then no cold water, then no water, then no electricity, then flooding from the shower, etc. We made lots of calls to the front desk, but the problems continued. Once they get everything up and running, it will be great. The rooms are big and really nice.
