A great beach resort with one drawback in dining. Ocean front room was spacious with a large patio. Several pools. No children! The only negative was around dinner dining. The restaurants are heavily booked and even an attempt to book a reservation between 7:30 and 8:30 on the first day of a five night stay, yielded only 2 reservations from five restaurants! Ridiculous. Later discovered that you could prebook, through Iberostar, but first time visitors may not know this, as we didn't.

The food is excellent, including at the buffet, but I didn't pay these $ to stand in line and watch my food get cooked or to choose from precooked food. Service at the buffet at night is also slack: water and wine glasses were empty a lot, for example.

Room Tip: Oceanfront rooms are large and specious

This was my third time at the Iberostar Grand Bavaro (I had last been there 4 years ago and the time before that was 5 years ago). Most everything I wrote in my prior review still holds true. The service is truly a 20 on a scale of 1-10, as is the food, and the overall facility. I would put the Iberostar Grand Bavaro up against any Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons.

My only real complaint is that the hotel is starting to show signs of aging, and while they have done some maintenance, they really need to make an investment to keep it in the #1 slot. Things like the fact that the beach chairs are the same as when I first went there 5 years ago, and they are in pretty tired shape. Likewise there are things in the room, and throughout the property that are haphazardly repaired (when you go in the pools, many of the tiles had fallen off and the repairs were done cheaply, or when you use the hot tubs, half the jets don't work). I hope the management of the hotel reads this review, and takes it seriously. The reality is that the carpets in the hallways are worn, there is rust in the showers (and the soap dish was falling off the wall), there are places that need to be painted. Suffice it to say that if they don't make the investment, they will lose travelers to newer resorts.

All of that said, I couldn't have had a better vacation. All of the food choices are A++, and the service cannot be beat. They provide you with 24 hour butler service, and one in particular (Mendys) was absolutely wonderful. They have a number of activities throughout the day (think of summer camp for grownups) including archery, riflery, darts, that are a lot of fun and help you meet your fellow travelers. The fact that the resort is 18 and over (no kids - at all) makes it a great getaway from the noise.

We had dinner at all five of the a la carte restaurants, and the buffet, and each meal was better than the last (the Kobe Filet Mignon at the Mediterranean was the best). The fact that they have unlimited lobster, crab, and shrimp at every lunch and dinner (if you do the buffet) is amazing.

The only other negative is that they started to run out of liquor at the end of our trip. This is supposed to be all inclusive, including top shelf liquor. When they started to run out of the "good stuff", it makes you wonder if someone is really paying attention.

I'd still consider going back for a fourth time, but would be happier if they fixed things first.

Room Tip: Pay extra for an ocean view - it's worth it.

Visited this beautiful tropical oasis March 6 to 12th and can't say enough about what an awesome place it was. We were blown away with the friendliness of the staff and how they made us feel right at home. From the greeting we got the first night at the front door (greeted with a glass of champagne and hot washcloths to freshen up) to the butler service, every encounter we had with staff was superb. We have been to puerto Vallarta and thought the people here were much friendlier. This is first experience with an all inclusive and we would go back in a heart beat. First place we have went where we thought we could stay a few more days. There is plenty of things to do every day, from bingo to dancing, sailing, beach volleyball, snorkel, or just lay around on the beach. All the chairs on beach have a small table with hut, or you could sit by the pool or in a cabana with your own lounge bed. Enjoyed the surf and turf restaurant, we are true blue Midwesterners so that was the restaurant we wanted for each night. I suggest if you know the type of food you want to have the butler make the reservations for you the first night. There were also French, Italian and Japanese. There is also a buffet that was superb. You can get steaks to order there too. Enjoyed the shows, favorite was the Rock and Michael Jackson shows. No need to do any excursions, this place made us want to stay there the whole time. Planning another trip back next year!

My wife and I and another couple stayed here in March celebrating our anniversaries. Nearly every positive comment you have read or will read about this resort is true. The landscape, beach area, pool, food, service, and rooms were all beyond expectation. Our only problem was our original room was not what we expected. We were promptly moved the next day. I am an early riser, so I was at the beach enjoying the sunrise every morning. That also allowed me to reserve the same chairs at the beach each day. It seemed as though there were always chairs available, although maybe not exactly where you want.

The food was unbelievable. No, we did not like everything, but there was such a variety that we always found something we did like. We had steak and lobster every day. We liked the specialty restaurants just for a change. The buffet at night is very similar to the buffet during the day, so the specialty restaurants made for a different environment and food. The Surf and Turf was our favorite.

Given all of the positive reviews and our fantastic experience, the only question about whether or not to go here is the price. It is more expensive than other resorts. We have been to All-inclusive resorts five times and all were nice, but none matched this one for service and personal attention. Our own personal butler was available all of the time and took care of anything we needed. Our room was made up twice per day including drawing a warm bath one evening without asking for it. Unexplainably, after just a couple of days, many of the staff members called us by name. All staff members, whether grounds crew, waiters, front desk staff, or anyone else, all spoke when you saw them and were very pleasant. We tipped appropriately, but their friendliness and attention was not a condition of the tip. They were great regardless. (The only exception to this was two bartenders at the pool bar who acted as though they would really rather not wait on you, but we just avoided them.) The Star Friends really made it fun. The shows were just ok. It is not a wild party resort for the most part. But there is a dance room and the other resorts next door to which you have access have a party if you want that.

So, is it worth it? For a special occasion where you really want to be pampered and do it the right way, yes it is worth the extra money. Most high-end all inclusive resorts are nice and you can find one for much less than this one. But I doubt you could find a better one for that extra fine vacation.

This was such a relaxing way to spend a vacation. We started each day enjoying a cup of coffee out on our balcony and watching the sunrise over the ocean. Then we'd head to the beach for a nice run. You can go for about 4-5 miles in either direction of the resort, and when the tide is out the beach is flat and easy to run.

After breakfast at the buffet, we'd head to the pool and lounge around meeting other fun couples and taking in the sun. While the resort was booked to capacity you'd never know it by the superior service and plenty of space for guests to relax and spread out. Finding the perfect cabana is the biggest (and only) challenge you'll face, but if you get out early you can grab a cabana and make it yours for the day.

We spent most of our time poolside at this resort and walking/running along the beach. There are other neighboring resorts with casinos and fun things you can check out as well. The locals set up a cluster of "shops" that are fun to pick out trinkets to take back home and the resort has nice shops for souvenirs.

Our room had a great view of the pool area and the sunrise. The workout room has spectacular views overlooking the ocean. We didn't spend a lot of time working out on this trip (it was too nice outside to spend time indoors), but we did take advantage of their couples massage - which was amazing!

The quality of the food at the resort was incredible. We thoroughly enjoyed their new Mediterranean restaurant by the ocean (the lobster appetizer and sea bass was incredible). They served lobster at the lunch and dinner buffets. We prefer the buffet to the restaurants, because it doesn't require you to schedule your day. I love being able to completely relax and play it by ear. We could get something to eat when we wanted to, dress up for dinner if we felt like it or go to the buffet. The food is freshly prepared right in front of you at the buffet. At the restaurants you can ask for different wines instead of the red or white house that they typically serve. We enjoyed their cabernets. At the pool they'll make anything you ask for, and they have all the premium alcohols available. The shows in the evening were fun, but we chose to go to bed early so we could catch the sunrise and enjoy every minute of sunshine!

This place knows how to take care of you and make sure your vacation is amazing! We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: I'd get a room close to the ocean and a few floors up. The sunrise is amazing!
