Just returned 2 days ago from PC and stayed at this hotel for 7 days. The hotel is only about 20 minutes away from the airport so it was a very quick ride upon arrival at PUJ.
Upon arrival, the airport is not what we're used to. After getting off the plane, we had to be loaded into an air conditioned bus to take us to a part of the airport where we pick up our luggage. It was a quick 3-5 minute ride. It was HOT! I mean HOT!!! We knew Aug was a hot and humid month for PC but wow! After all stuff that needs to be done at airport, we found our transfer right away and we're on our way to the hotel.
Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted and welcomed by the hotel staff and gave us some refreshments. It was a nice of them to do that since it was super HOT. Staff was welcoming and nice. Check in went smooth and it was a 15 minute process. The guy that helped us was really friendly and chatted with me. They were able to accommodate my email request to place us in bldg #3, close to the beach and close enough to main pool and lobby but not too close like bldg #4 (which is next to main pools and lobby) but I think it might be too noisy. The room I was assigned to was a partial ocean view so I politely asked the guy if he had a room that is ocean view and he after checking and going to the back, he was able to find me one at the same bldg. We booked a Junior Suite Deluxe Room. I also asked if I can upgrade to Club Premium but no rooms were available and it was a busy week. So check in went smoothly and up we went to our room. All dinner was pre-booked before our arrival so I didn't need to go guest services to do any dinner booking. Guest services is right next to check in desk.
Restaurants - After checking in and settling in our room, it was already around 4pm so we just went to Strikers for a quick bite to eat since we have reservations at Kyoto at 7:30pm. Strikers is one of the restaurants that does not need reservations and open 24 hrs. They serve pizza, hot dog, ham and cheese sandwich, some kind of steak (and it was good), salads and many more selections. After we ate, I went to guest services just to make sure my reservations I made via email were good and valid. The lady at guest services was nice and she printed out the receipts/vouchers for each night and you just present this to each restaurant.
There's quite a few choices of restaurants at this hotel so I can't imagine anyone saying the food sucks and can't find anything to eat. We tried Kyoto (japanese), Coral Seafood, Santa Fe Steakhouse, Mexico Lindo an we repeated the steakhouse and seafood. We did NOT try the Italian, Spanish and French Restaurant (this one costs extra). My family thought the steakhouse was pretty good, decent Rib Eyes and the Seafood restaurant was pretty good as well, we all ordered the lobster and thought was pretty good. All ala cartes that we went to had good service and service was pretty fast. The servers were all nice an kept refilling our drinks. We spoke very little spanish but they were nice, friendly and try to make conversations with my husband since he was the one kept asking for wine. We also went to Hoyo19 which was by the golf course and that was ok. The view while having meal was the golf course and the food we had was decent. They had 2 buffets, Miramar (international food) and Bohio (which is more dominican food) we had buffets for breakfast and lunch and many many choices. We didn't eat everything they had but we always found food that we liked, i.e. pancakes, sausages, omelettes, eggs, toasts, many different kinds of bread, crepe's, and many more. So for people that says food is bad, not sure why they would say that as there are many to choose from. Yah their seasonings are different from what we're used to but we always found something we like and the food that we are used to eating.
Resort/Hotel Grounds/Things to do - The pool at this resort was HUGE. No need to fight for chairs. There's always a few available for use. And just a few steps away was the beautiful beach. We went on a catamaran excursion and was able to see other resorts and this is by far the resort that has the best beach. We also chatted with the catamaran crew and in their opinion, this resort has the best beach and also a bit more modern than the others. Not sure how true but they said this is one of the biggest resort and when the government officials have some kind of conference on this side of Dominican Republic, they stay at this hotel or the Melia. The crew is in no way affiliated with the hotel. The beach was beautiful. They have many chairs available and palm trees everywhere. This resort was built along the beach so there are many rooms that have ocean view and therefore their beach is very long an wide.
My kids also enjoyed their non-motor activities on the beach. the kayaks and others that were available for guests with no charge. There's always something going on by the beach and the activities desk. Always playing music and ppl are dancing or doing zumba. They also had bingo one day and my son won a hat and a pack of coffee. They also have pingpong tables and other games at the activity section of the resort.
We also tried the Pirates Island water park and my kids love it. The slides here are for bigger kids. We also tried the water park that has no charge and my kids enjoyed that as well. They also have mini golf, laser tag available for guests. They have a bar at this section of the resort which my kids loved... but of course, the bar here does not serve alcohol.
The resort is so huge so there is a train that can take you where ever you need to go. We got on the train once just to see the hotel grounds and it is beautiful. The workers do a good job keeping the grounds super clean. The lady that cleaned our room daily was Ana and she was really nice. Tipped her daily and she kept room clean and restocked our refrigerator daily. I just left her a note if I wanted something extra and she kept up with it.
There are stores on the ground level of the resort where people can buy things. They are pretty expensive though. My kids like to shop at Quiksilver here in the US and their price is almost double. There's stores as well by the golf course.
Excursions - Hotels had many excursions available. We only took one excursion from the resort which is the Adventure Boogies. We wanted this because it's only a 4 hr excursion. We have a 9 yr old so i didn't want to be out the whole day like other excursions. We enjoyed this excursion and got to see the people and houses outside the resort. This excursion had 3 time slots, 9am, 11am, and 2pm. We chose the 2pm one and was perfect. We were picked up at lobby and took us to where we rode the buggies. There were about 30-45 buggies that went all together and it was fun. Took us to Macao beach and a cave where people jumped in the water in the dark cave.
Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay. We will definitely recommend this resort to family an friends and will not hesitate to stay there again if we go back to PC. I'd like to try another resort though that is good for families just to compare and see other option but if nothing interests me, I'll definitely go back to Barcelo. This is a great resort for families and couples.
