“overpriced”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2013

We stayed two nights in a big room in the main building with a/c. The room was basic but this is ok and was what we expected from a homestay. The a/c works only at night.

The bathroom however needs renovation - it was shabby with a shelf that was almost rotten away.

The room was mostly clean (except there was waste in the toilet bin from the preceding guests and shabby pillows). There were no blankets on the beds and we had to ask for toilet paper and towels.

The location is good, close to the entry point of the Tangkoko Nature Reserve.

The food was simple and plenty but somewhat boring - for lunch and dinner there was always grilled fish, rice and only some variation in the vegetable side dishes. Breakfast was good.

For this room with air condition we were charged 350.000 IDR per night which we found way too much for rural Sulawesi in low season. For this price we would expect a better standard. So the price did not match the value at all.

The people where friendly and the laundry service was good.

They arranged a transfer by private car to Manado (250.000 IDR) to catch the ferry to Bunaken Island, but the driver was 1 1/2 hour late so we missed the public boat. The driver promised to find another boat for the same price but there were apparently none. So we lost one day of precious holiday.

It is not guaranteed that you can visit the Tangkoko Nature Reserve with Reni, the guide from the Tarsius homestay, as the nature reserve office will assign a guide to you. Our guide was nice but spoke very little English, but at the afternoon walk we were also accompanied by another guy who spoke good English.
Our experience of the Tangkoko Nature Reserve itself was good. The forest is beautiful. In the late afternoon we saw the lovely Tarsiers and during the morning walk we saw the black Macaques from very close. Unfortunately it was raining badly so no birds or other animals to see.

Room Tip: I think the rooms in the separate builing are newer than the rooms in the main building

We came to see the Tarsiers and we were not disappointed. Not much is written up about this lovely little village and it was only through the tales of other travelers that we decided to go. We spent 2 nights here and really enjoyed our stay. We had a large room in the freestanding building, which was clean and very basic. Bathroom could use a little updating. Western toilet, buckets flush, cold water shower and a sink with running water. No Internet or Wi-Fi. Electricity only on at night. The staff here is fabulous and go out of their way to make sure you are happy. Rooms are 100,000 a night and include all three meals. Since most people come here for the nature hike this is arranged for the next morning. It is a long morning but worth the money (200,000). We were up at 4am, cup of tea and were on our way at 4:30am. Short hike in to the tree where the Tarsiers live. You wait a little while and then they arrive. Great experience and lots of time for pictures. Renny and Yvonne were our guides for the morning. They work for Tarsius and really love what they do. The rest of the morning is spent finding other wildlife and walking through the jungle as it wakes up. Back in the village around 10am for a big breakfast. Some people leave right after the hike, but we stayed another day. The beach is 500 meters away and makes for a nice afternoon swimming and playing with the very friendly local children. There is a small shop that sells cold drinks and snacks. Tarsius can also arrange your onward travel with their car. A lovely place to visit!
