“Rustic, comfortable, delicious food, friendly hosts”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

The owners, Oudy and Evi, are very friendly. They have a friendly pitbull dog. Evi has a culinary certification. She oversees the preparation of the food. I read reviews about the food here and I thought the people were just being polite when they sang praises of the food. But now that I'd tasted it myself, I'll have to say that the flavour of the food is beyond words! For Rp70,000, dinner was a spread of 5 dishes plus rice and noodle soup. Breakfast, included in the room rate of Rp300,000, was bananas at 4am before the hike and then pancakes with palm sugar and coffee/tea at 8am after the hike. There are flies here because it's just normal for flies to exist here in the forest.

The window of the cottage opens up to a view of a stream and the forest. It was relaxing to sit at the veranda and listen to the flowing water. The bed was soft and comfortable. There were some dead insects on top of the mosquito net. The bathroom has a real rain bath: the shower area is not sheltered so you can take a bath in the rain. The pebbled shower area made me feel like I was showering while standing in a stream. There was no heated water. The size of the towel is half the normal towel size.

Electricity is turned on at night at sunset till 10pm, then turned on again at 3.45am. No TV, no internet, no socket to plug in your chargers. However, there was a problem with the generator the evening that I was here so it was dark from 5pm to 7pm. There was no cellphone signal. Do shower before 5pm. Keep a torch or handphone on your bed at night because it is pitch dark at night. I could hear were some nocturnal birds flying around and chirping at night. Some people might find it scary to stay here alone.

Free transportation to and from Tangkoko Nature Reserve is provided. It's a 10-min drive away. You can arrange your hike with the guides here. Jun was my guide. He has very sharp eyes so I was fortunate to see Tarsiers, Hornbill, Kingfisher, Macaca Nigra, Bats and Maleo during the 3-hour morning hike. He is very knowledgeable and answered all my questions I had about these animals. Entrance Ticket Rp15,000 Camera Fee Rp30,000 Tour Guide Fee Rp85,000. You have to pre-arrange the hike with a guide because there's nobody waiting at the park headquarters at 5am. The evening hike is only to see the Tarsiers, whereas you can see the Tarsiers and other animals in the morning. I highly recommend a one-night stay at Tangkoko Dove Villas if you wish to see the animals.

Oudy arranged the transfer from Tangkoko Dove Villas to the airport for Rp300,000.

We stayed at the Dove villas for one night. The facilities are pretty basic but more than adequate for visiting the national park in the middle of wild. The villa is located very close to the entrance to the park. The owner, Oudi and his staffs are very friendly and helpful. We did a morning and evening tour and Oudi actually dropped us to the trail heads. Oudi also helped us arranged the tour guide, Jun (if I spell the name correctly), who was very good. He got sharp eyes and knows where the animals are. We saw all the animals on our lists (tarsier, Macaque monkeys, hornbill, cuscus). Oudi's wife is the cook and she is very good. We had a dinner and a breakfast. The dinner was delicious and plenty. Oudi also shared his home-made Saki with us and that tastes good :)

It was a very pleasant stay for us and would recommend to others.

We stayed at the Dove villas for two nights and had an amazing time! The villas are basic but really nice and the food prepared by the cook was really good! She knew how to cook!

Allen and Mornix, our driver/staff at Dove, were amazing! They arranged everything and were so nice and had a good time with them. They made our stay. Oudy, the owner, was also really nice and helpfull. Also our guide Jun was amazing. We got to see the tarsiers and black macaque monkeys, hornbills and so much more. They also took us to the beach to go snorkeling (and let us help with the turtles who are set out in the sea after one year) and (as wine lovers) when we asked if it was possible to find some wine for us in Manado, they did!

I really recommend Dove villlas! Good food, amazing staff and the jungle is beautiful including the wildlife!

We stayed at Tangkoko Dove Villas for one night in Aug 2013 and I'm really sorry to say that our room was really dirty.
I believe the bedsheets hadn't been changed for quite a long time. They were stained, smelly and torn.
Bathroom as well was not clean.
There was also a big termite mud nest (a mount) in the wardrobe!
The owners are really friendly but this is not enough, I cannot recommend this place: they should keep it clean... we felt all itching when we left...

I booked two chalets for 3 night over 4 months in advance for my sister and I. We left after having to stay the first night.
Oudie was difficult to contact in the days before we were due to visit when we were trying to arrange a pick up from the harbour. He had been given the name of the resort we were staying at on Bunaken Island, but he didn't try to make contact. We finally got contact the morning we were leaving the island.
We arrived at Dove Villas - we were left at a table in the eating area, our bags to the side, and unattended for a lengthy time before coffee and tea were offered and then lunch.
Some time after lunch we were finally shown to our chalet. One chalet. On the plus side it did have two beds.
It was "basic". The mosquito nets had holes patched with duct tape, there were no towels, the verandah had a hole in the floor and one wall had separated from the others. The chalet walls had numerous small holes. The shower area floor was covered in moss, had very dubious (shared?) drainage, the shower curtain was utterly filthy. The toilet broke.
We left the next morning when transport was arranged. We were given a dicount off the price of the room - but the overall bill added up wrongly by an amount equal to half that discount, and we were not given all the beers and coke cans we had left with the kitchen staff.
I am no stranger to basic, having been on a klotok (small wooden boat) in Kalimantan... sleeping on the deck, a mandi bucket for flushing the toilet, cold river water shower, etc. And I've enjoyed it so much I've been twice.
But Dove Villas does not in any way advise that the facilities are so basic and un-cared for.
The place could be stunning if it was cared for, some money reinvested in repairs, and gave honest and up-front information.
And if confirmed bookings were not changed so that larger groups could be accomodated.

Myself and a friend visited Tangkoko Nature Reserve, recently, specifically to see and photograph the tarsiers and other wildlife. We stayed for two nights at Dove Villas, which we found was ideally located for visiting the reserve, just 2 kilometres away,15 minutes by vehicle. Although the accommodation is basic, wooden bungalows, it was more than adequate for our two day stay. Breakfast was a choice of tea or coffee and homemade pancakes, served with a sugar cane and cinnamon sauce. Lunch and dinners, prepared by Evi, and her staff were excellent and plentiful, normally consisting of rice, fish with three or four tasty local Minahasan dishes, not too hot for the western pallet.

Our hosts Ouldy and his wife Evi couldn't have been nicer and more welcoming. Nothing was too much for them, including arranging transportation to the reserve, our local guide, entrances etc. In the evenings, one of their staff drove us into Batu Putih fishing village, at no extra cost, to take photographs of fishing boats on the beach.

If you're arriving and departing from Manado airport, you can arrange in advance with Ouldy to be transferred, for which there is a charge. Travelling time is about 1 hour 30 minutes on a good road.

The best time to visit the park to see the tarsiers is at 0400, trekking through the reserve until about 1000. Walking is easy to moderate and you should wear comfortable shoes with a good grip. Don't forget to bring your own water! Long trousers and shirt sleeves recommended with mosquito repellent.

We had a perfect stay at Tangkoko Dove Villas. The owner Oudy and his wife are very friendly and helpfull. They'll arrange transport within the area and other destinations like Manado. Our guide in the park (Epson) was a very pleasant guy and made sure we saw plenty of Tarsiers, Macace and Hornbills. he even arranged transport back in a truck together with 3 big turtles..

The rooms are jungle cabins, comfort is ok but you're in the jungle so expect many noises from the live around you at night. Part of the experience! Also the outdoor shower is great to give you a real jungle feeling. Dinner at night is great with plenty of food which we shared with a very nice and diverse group of travellers. You'll go to bed early because jungle trekking starts at 4.30
