“Just what we were looking for”
Reviewed 28 August 2012

We were looking for a place on Lake Ouachita that was quiet and secluded, had access to a boat launch, allowed pets and had a restaurant on the premises. Shangri La Resort had it all. We were very pleased with our stay and will definitely return.

The Shangri La Resort is awesome. It is old, but great. The cafe has daily lunch specials that are good home cooked meals. The breakfast is great. AND, the pies are really great. You better put your pie order in early if you want a whole one or if you want them to put a piece back for later in the day.
We stayed in a two room cabin that was very dated but it had a kitchen in it, tv, and cold air (although there was a minor problem with the a/c early on our last night but was fixed quickly). We didn't spend much time in the room because we were on the water most of the time. The staff was very friendly. The marina staff was also very friendly.
I believe we have found a place that we are going to return to annually. It is a great place to take a family. If you are into boating , fishing, skiing, wakeboarding, or wake surfing, this is the place. It is located on beautiful Lake Ouachita

My father has been going to Shangri La since he was a kid in the 1960s, and he took his own family there when we were growing up as well. Shangri-la is not a 5-star resort in the typical sense. However, if it's peace, beauty, and DARN GOOD PIE that you're looking for, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: The cabins are nice and rustic, but the rooms in the main building have this special retro flair tha...

The view of the lake and the serenity is absolutely outstanding. The cabins are old, funky, rusty, and in need of repair and our cabin could have used some new beds. Except for the flat screen tv, you would think it was the 1950's. Early October our weather was divine most of the time and we came for the Big Crystal Dig and Quartz and Quilt Show. Don't expect to find a computer in the lobby--everything is still done by hand here. Especially the pies in the cafe which are OUTSTANDING....don't miss the Dutch Apple. The staff was cordial but not particularly friendly or happy. And if you want housekeeping, expect to do it yourself. We had an annoying fly problem in the room--at least 10 or more dive bombing us at all times. Although "rough", the cabin is spacious and you cannot beat the view here--especially morning coffee on the lake.

Room Tip: Bring a fly swatter.

My wife and I have stayed in 5 Star hotels from Amman, Jordan to all points in the U.S. This is one of our favorite places. It is not 5 Star. It is a quite place of beauty, charm, great food, and friendly people. The view of the lake is not matched anywhere. The acceptance felt by everyone here allows one to just relax and enjoy. If you want chocolate mints on your pillow, to stay dressed in your finest, or an all night bar, this is not your place. If you want a place to enjoy family, to boat, to ski, to golf nearby, and to enjoy great home cooking, this is home. And it has been for my family for 30 years....I just hope for many more.

Room Tip: The rooms are not 5 star luxury...They are clean and large enough.

Oh my goodness, what a pleasant surprise. After a two mile drive down a two lane forested road, you are greeted by cabins and a small motel. When you walk into the small office area, everything is still done by hand, from the reservations, the sign in on a small postcard and the handwritten receipt. The bookkeeping is also done on a large spreadsheet on the back wall of the office. You get two keys and don't even present a credit card until checkout. The rooms are spacious and sparking clean. Ours had two beds, and two chairs with end tables along with a sitting room with the MOST comfortable couch and throw pillows. There was no microwave or refrigerator or shampoo or blow dryer just like in the 50's but it's part of the experience. The ice machine was broken on our visit and the parking lot hasn't been repaved in a while but kind of adds to the charm. There were kids playing catch and riding bikes on the spacious grounds. A couple played tennis on the tennis court and there's a swimming pool in addition to the lake, even though it was closed for the season. The best part was sitting outside at the end of the day on the chairs and benches in front of your room listening to the bugs and birds and watching the squirrels scamper up the pines. The sun setting on the changing leaves in the forest was an extra bonus. It was a step back in time for the bargain price of $68 a night. The restaurant on the premises has really good food with out-of-this-world homemade pie. What's not to love about the whole experience? We'll be back!!
