“If relaxation had a name it would be the Nisbet”
Reviewed 11 May 2010

We recently returned from a week at Nisbet Plantation.

My goal was to find a place that allowed us to totally relax, and this resort did just that. My wife and I have traveled from Maui to Italy and are extremely picky when it comes to food, location, accommodations and staff. This resort hit all marks with 5 stars.
The food is fantastic, from the nice breakfast at the beach, lunch at the bar or dinner. And dinner was to die for! The only problem was the 10 pounds I put on after a week of great food.
At first I was a little leery about the location, when I mapped it on Google earth; it shows just down from the airport. Don’t despair, the occasional prop plane taking off is very little distraction or annoyance. If I had to pick a downside to the location it would be the wind, but to be honest we spent a few days on the other side enjoying the beach at the Four Season, and it got somewhat hot. The beach was a bit choppy with a lot of sea grass, but nothing that would keep you out of the water. Walking down the beach a mile was a great way to enjoy the area.
The accommodations were also excellent. We stayed in an upper premier Jr. suite, which was perfect. We spent quite a bit of time watching the ocean and breeze sway the palm trees. Not sure how the other rooms were, but if I had to return it would be the same room.
The staff – there are not enough words to say how much the staff makes this resort. Whether it’s Violet at breakfast, or Patterson greeting you for dinner they all make you feel at home.
Getting there is probably the only downside. If you have the ability, take the water taxi. It makes it much nicer and convenient; however you will pay for that privilege. We took the water taxi on our arrival and ferry to return. The ferry is no problem and drops you off 5 min from the airport.

As far as nightlife on Nevis, don't go there for the parties and craziness. This is an island to relax and take in the Caribbean beauty. Other great places to visit while on the island, Golden Rock for lobster sandwich & Lime bar for great Grouper.

We recently stayed at Nisbet Plantation and were completely blown away by the hotel. We had originally booked for 10 days but our flights were cancelled because of the volcanic ash and we ended up staying 3 weeks - lucky us! Having heard tales from other friends affected by the ash, I now know how truly lucky we were. Unlike many hotels that took advantage of stranded guests by putting up their prices, we were treated with real kindness and generosity by the management. Thank you Jamie and Steve!
The service at Nisbet is incredible, again a testament to the excellent managers (Violet and Paterson stand out here). All the staff are so helpful and friendly, by the time we left we really felt like part of the family. It is so refreshing to go to a hotel where the staff are happy and are free to be themselves - Nesbit is the complete opposite of the numerous sterile hotels dotted around the Caribbean which are totally lacking in any personality. When you stay at Nisbet you know you are in the Caribbean and learn to love and respect the beautiful country of Nevis and it wonderful people.
The hotel ticks all the other boxes too - lovely beach, great swimming pool and lovely rooms (no TVs so parents might want to take a portable DVD player). It stands out in one other area too, the food at the main house restaurant is delicious. The best we have had in the Caribbean. We have been to many other hotels in the regions over the years and Nisbet tops them all. We will definitely be going back!

Great beach and bar. Don't miss the BBQ on Thursday. Food was good, service was better. You can see the monkey's every evening around 4:30 on the edge of the property. First class property, great place to unwind and relax. We will be back!

Didn't stay here, but rented a villa nearby.

Had dinner one night (BBQ in the Pool Area - food OK but not spectacular) and would have gone back to eat in the restaurant, but found the service really rather poor.

We went back to find out more about the hotel and to book dinner and possibly some treatments at the spa but the exceptionally disinterested and rude attitude of the reception staff put us off completely.

Dear Cruwysing,

I appreciate your honest feedback and apologize that you did not feel welcome at Nisbet Plantation. We strive to ensure every guest our staff members encounter – whether they are a guest of the hotel or the island – has an exceptional experience. While I feel that we are able to achieve this ambitious goal most of the time, it appears we fell short in your encounter and it is not reflective of the high standards of our resort. Please accept my apologies.

Thank you again for your feedback, which will help us continue to improve our guest experience at Nisbet Plantation.

We rented a villa near the Nisbet Plantation and loved visiting their beach bar, having breakfast, and dining in the great house. We set up an account on our first day, and just enjoyed the facilities and dining options during our stay. Even though we weren't hotel guests, we were treated as though we were. Very warm and friendly staff--beautiful grounds and perfect location on the beach.

We recently returned from a week at Nisbet Plantation.

Background: Everyone has their own style of vacation. We take a laid back approach, rarely leaving the property, eating substantially all of our meals at the property and spending most of our daylight hours on the beach. We’ve previously stayed at Little Dix Bay, Biras Creek, Peter Island, Cap Juluca (twice), Cuisinart, and Hotel Villa Del Sol (Mexico).

Our initial impression after being shown our room and taking a brief tour of the property was “uh oh.” Nisbet is smaller, less visually impressive, and not as “glitzy” as most of the other properties at which we have stayed. We were concerned that we had made a big mistake. That said, after a wonderful week at Nisbet, we had dramatically changed our tune. It’s a special place.

Room: We stayed in an upper premier junior suite. The room itself was nice with good furnishings. The products were private label but very good. The porch was small but functional. It is more set back from the beach than Cap Juluca (our favorite porch) and Cuisinart so the views are not nearly as good. When we arrived, the air conditioner was not turned on the room so it was very hot. It took 24 hours and closing all of the blinds to cool of the room.

Food: We enjoyed the food – especially lunch. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served in different locations which is nice. The nightly dinner menu is fairly limited (only 4 options for appetizers and entrees) but we never struggled to find something we wanted and each meal was terrific. The wine list was good, and unlike most resorts, there was an abundance of less expensive (by Caribbean standards) wine options, though it is frustrating to see wines you can buy in the grocery store for $10 being sold for $35.

Beach: The beach was much better than we envisioned based on the hotel’s website. There is a section reserved for only hotel guests that has well placed wooden “huts” with beach chairs. An attendant from the bar came by every hour or so to bring water or see if you wanted to order a drink. (It’s not afternoon sorbet like at Cap Juluca and Cuisinart but it did the trick.) While we were there, the beach was not at all crowded. In fact, we were the only ones on the beach much of the time. There are two downsides to the beach. First, it was extremely windy. The resort is on the Atlantic which apparently is the windy side compared to the Caribbean side. While we were there, the wind ranged from “it’s windy but it’s kind of nice because of the heat” to “we have to retreat to the pool because so much sand is blowing that it hurts.” Second, Nisbet’s slice of the beach is well maintained. Adjoining property owners do not appear to do any maintenance so there are huge amounts of seaweed and other materials on the beach making strolls on the beach not terribly inviting.

Ambience: Nisbet is a very, very relaxing place. If you can’t relax there, medication is probably your best hope.

Service: Without a doubt, the service at Nisbet is the best we have experienced in the Caribbean. The folks at Nisbet were warm, friendly, prompt and helpful.

We enjoyed Nisbet Plantation. It is definitely less glitzy than some of the places we have previously stayed. (It’s also less expensive.) In retrospect, the only issues we had with Nisbet are things beyond the control of the management and staff - windy beach, inability to take long strolls on the beach, tree frogs that make noises at night that are eerily similar to the sound of an alarm clock, less impressive views. The things they can control (particularly service and atmosphere) are impeccable.

Service - The service here is perfect - staff are friendly, polite, but know when to leave guests to themselves.

Room - The room we had was directly on the beach - it was in an elegant Caribbean style and had a large bathroom and dressing room / closet.

Location - The hotel is the only Plantation House that is directly on the beach and this makes the location unbeatable. Charlestown (capital of Nevis) is a 15-20min drive away and for guests who are wishing to eat out in the evenings there are a variety of restaurants that are a short taxi ride away (Rumours / Gallipot / Miss Junes / Golden Rock Plantation)

The hotel itself serves evening dinner in the Great House - this is an elegant affair and the food is very good. During the day a wider variety of food is available at the beach bar - this is also excellent and I found myself torn between the fresh fish of the day and nachos on a regular basis !

Liked the best - We loved the romantic meal that the hotel will organise for couples on the beach - it made us feel very special and we will remember it for the rest of our lives.

Liked the least - nothing
