“Have been to Nisbet five times, and will return”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2011

If you're looking for quiet, stunningly beautiful, friendly personal service that would equal anywhere in the world, this is the place for you. Nevis has a certain charm that leaves a lasting impression on those who enjoy real people and a non-touristy destination. No hordes of visitors here; just those who return year after year. If you want casinos, crowds, nightlife, and bright lights, go somewhere else. Nisbet is what you expect it to be, and the experience is unforgettable.

We visited Nisbet for six nights in January 2011. We had originally plannned to spend the first 4 nights at Nisbet and last 2 nights in St. Kitts, but we enjoyed our stay so much we extended at Nisbet for the entire 6 nights. The rooms were comfortable. The service was gracious. The food was excellent. If you are looking for a glitzy resort with 24 hour food and drink and a host of activities, Nisbet will not be the place for you. If you are looking for a quietly elegant, traditional and unspoiled island vacation, Nisbet is the spot. Highlights of the trip were the dinners at the Plantation House, an island tour with a stop at the Botanical Gardens, lunches at Golden Rock and Montpelier. Rita and Calvin were very friendly and informative taxi drivers. Yes, it was windy on the beach. Can't really fault Nisbet for that. We definitely plan on returning. I would not change a thing.

We booked 2 rooms at the Nisbet for a fantastic experience at the end of a Caribbean trip. Booked it on a hotels website at a reduced rate, but it was still £400 Uk per night per room, bed and breakfast, not cheap even by Caribbean standards. We were upgraded to the Ocean front suites which were big and clean, but still quite old fashioned, no tv and the wifi didn't work in my room, I had to walk out and up the hill. Dressing gowns but no slippers. We had expected a lot from this place given the tripadvisor reviews and the recent Conde Nast "best in the Caribbean" award, but were extremely disappointed. It's set in a large field with a few palm trees going down to the very windy beach, and had the feel of a campsite.
The wind is so bad it's not possible to sit comfortably on the beach, and given the angle of the palm trees it looks like it's always windy.
The food and beverage options for a hotel of this price were unacceptable. Lunch finishes at 2.30 pm, and no other food available until afternoon tea. No room service menu and the only evening food is the main house dinner, served from 6.30 till 8, far too early. A set menu that will cost you $70 US excluding drinks and a ridiculous dress code that makes men wear closed shoes, long trousers and a buttoned shirt - what century are these people
in? The girl at breakfast the next morning, who, to give her her due, tried to find out why we were so grumpy, could only suggest my friend goes to town to buy a pair of long trousers....
The breakfast was fine, a good choice and freshly cooked (apart from the crab omlette which was made with cheap, processed crabsticks) served down in the beach restaurant which
has seen better days, dusty and peeling paint made it all look a bit grubby.
The hotel website we had booked on said that there was free laundry (there wasn't, but they honoured that when I showed them our booking). it also said that the beach bar was open for dinner- it wasn't. They need to make sure that 3rd party booking agents have the up to
date info.
The location means that you need to get a taxi or local bus (during daylight hours) to eat anywhere else. We tried to leave the day we arrived as it was so not what we had expected, but got short shrift from the front desk, we had paid up front via a booking agency so yes we could leave if we had wanted to they said, but there would be no refund, so at almost £1200 each for 3 nights we had to grin and bear it. The manager didn't even bother to get off the phone to talk to my friend when he asked to see him. And by the way, we had the same experience as a previous reviewer, getting back one night from eating out (at the Gallipot, a great place) to find one of the room doors left wide open after evening housekeeping had been in...
All in all a very disappointing stay. If you are looking for an expensive getaway in a place with no ambience, no decent food and beverage offering on a windy beach then this is for
you. If not, try somewhere else.

Dear gill35Uk,

Thank you for sharing your comments. Most of your concerns were addressed earlier in a response to the review posted by your traveling companion LondonDylan.

We want all of our guests to have a wonderful experience, but there are things – like Mother Nature - that are beyond our control. Fortunately, the vast majority of the year she is exceptionally cooperative.

There are millions of travel-related websites and unfortunately, we can’t police them all to ensure accuracy. We encourage every traveler to consult a hotel’s own website when planning holidays in order to ensure they have the most up-to-date and accurate information. Reading the latest 10-20 reviews beforehand is another way to see if a hotel is a good fit for you.

Nisbet is an award-winning luxury hotel recognized for the experience we provide. We maintain a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere, and the only dress code is for evening dining. This adds a sense of elegance that our guests expect from a luxury resort.

The ladies and gentlemen at Nisbet are anxious to please every guest. While we have not offered free laundry service for several years, we happily accommodated your request. We also provided you with a free room upgrade.

Despite our best efforts, we’re sorry we didn’t meet your approval. It appears that you and your companion sought a different atmosphere for your holiday.

Small, with a strong sense of place, it is the antithesis of the big, impersonal resorts that dot the Caribbean. From the wonderfully attentive and warm manager Jamie and Steve through to every member of their staff, you are made to feel as if you are not customers but their personal guests. We travel all over and can say from experience that Nisbet is a truly special place.

As the raving reviews say, the staff is incredibly nice and eager to please, the food is good (not great), and the rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated and clean. But even all the positives can not out weigh the fact that the wind is so powerful, it feels like the entire resort is going to be swept into the ocean. You can't sit by the water, because the wind blows piercing sand into your face, and you can't go swimming because the waves are rough and enormous. It's hard to sleep at night because of the constant whistling through the shutters. Other negatives that I'll highlight are the lack of hot water in the bathrooms (no chance of taking a hot bath), and that the cleaning staff left our room unlocked (lame). Though there are several positives overall the resort is a Fail. Stay else where (Four Seasons) if you want the calm, soothing island experience.

Dear alandsbe and JonnyL444,

Thank you very much for your comments about your stay, and the kind words about our staff and accommodations. Providing exceptional service is our primary focus, and we want all of our guests to enjoy their vacation here.

While we go above and beyond to ensure guests are happy and satisfied, we cannot unfortunately control the weather. During the time of your stay, there was a system over the Caribbean that created heavy winds and surf not only here but also on Antigua and Anguilla. This was a very unusual occurrence.

Typically at Nisbet Plantation, there are cool breezes, which keep guests comfortable on the beach and the bugs away, and a calm swimming area thanks to the artificial reef we built several years ago. I am happy to report that since your visit, the seas have returned to their normal calm conditions and Mother Nature has graciously returned the sand to our beaches for our guests to enjoy.

In addition, I have spoken to housekeeping and believe we have resolved any issues concerning keeping the doors locked. Thank you for your input on this matter.

Again, I apologize that the weather was not ideal for your visit.

After visiting Nevis 3 previous times and staying at the Four Seasons, we decided to stay at Nisbet this trip. This was partly due to the T&L magazine readers pole naming it no. 1 in the Caribbean and also because of the rave reviews here. What we found was a resort that was vastly over-rated.
You should know that my wife and I have traveled to many parts of the Caribbean for more than 30 years so we have a bit of experience.
To be sure the staff was wonderful and the grounds lovely in an understated way and even our rooms were nice. The problem with Nisbet is the Beach. First of all it's on the Atlantic side of the Island which is the windward side. Scroll down and see how many reviewers mention the wind at the beach. Secondly the beach has been terribly eroded. The lounges have been moved to either side of the bar area because there is no longer a real beach front. In fact the bar, and pool are one good storm away from being in the ocean. The pool is small and in need of some upgrading.
While we were there the wind was blowing so hard we had trouble sleeping at night, and sitting by the water was out of the question.
So we checked out and went to the Four Seasons. While I was checking in another couple was there having left Nisbet, and we all agreed that the reviews were misleading.
We go to the Caribbean for the idyllic beach front experience and this was not what we found at Nisbet.

Friends who have been told us what to expect and the other reviews have said it all, and it is all true. The number of repeat visitors we met there speaks for itself. This is a very special place, with the very highest standards and the loveliest, friendliest staff. We also enjoyed walking up the mountain (some of it anyway) and biking round the island.
