“A Secret Shared !”
Reviewed 1 December 2013 via mobile

We left Oualie Beach Resort last evening, not long before sunset. The sun was beating down on Nevis when all of a sudden, the sky filled with tears and burst with warm rain. A fitting bye bye to the most wonderfully relaxing holiday in ages !
Please don't visit Oualie if you are looking for high rise glitz or swim up pool bars. Don't even think about packing if your idea of Heaven is organised entertainment and plush marble dance floors, Zumba classes or beach waiters ! But do consider this dear little secret if, like us, you have travelled widely and happily accept the special places that should preferably remain secret.
Our thanks go to John and Karen Yearwood. Thank you for the music and that gorgeous bottle of wine we shared before we left !
To Marcie, Michelle and Tamara whose individual attention made our morning breakfasts such a happy start to the day !
To dear Tim, for your gracious manner and gentlemanly
Attention to detail.
To Juan for mixing our drinks and never letting our glasses go dry !
Special thanks to the lovely ladies who kept our untidiness under control for two whole weeks ! Our rooms were immaculate!
To the guys who tended and mended the beautiful gardens we say thank you too !
To all reception staff, especially Faith, who helped in so many ways.
No where is ever perfect. Tweeks can always be made, but fresh paint fades and sometimes, that's just the way it should be !

So, I just returned from a long vacation on Nevis and the wife and I stayed at the Oualie Beach Resort. It's a motel that happens to be right on the best beach on Nevis.

Pros:

The beach is 50' from the furthest room. We were in a closer room and it was 30' from the front door to the water.
The beach is in a cove and sea life is abundant. We would go snorkeling in the mornings and we saw sea turtles, stingrays, and a million other fish.
The cove is also home to the cycling club rental place, the sailing and snorkeling rental place, the jet ski rental place, and just about anything else that you want to rent on the water was steps away, but separate from the resort and not an intrusion.
The concierge and related staff were wonderful and a valuable resource. Want to do something, call the main desk and they'll arrange it.
The bar was ok. Prices were good and the drinks were ok.
We got an off season deal for less than 150$ a night.

Cons:

The rooms are severely dated. The toilet leaked from the base and did not flush well. The wifi, ac, and tv were wonky and worked, then didn't, then did. The bed was just plain horrible. The frig was old and had holes in it.
The food at the restaurant was the absolute worst on the island. The food is frozen, microwaved, and just bad. I can't even explain how bad. It's like they took frozen veggies, microwaved them and tossed them on the plate. The proteins in the dishes were just dead limp remnants. And the prices! $20 for a frozen patty hamburger that tasted like cardboard, and that was the cheapest item on the menu.
The cleaning staff is hit or miss depending on who is on duty.

Conclusion:

We got to Nevis and it was gorgeous. We were on the best beach on the island, and we paid less than $150 a night. Would I stay there again? Not a chance; my wife would kill me. We did visit a lot of the other resorts on the island for meals. Golden Rock was visually stunning and the food was amazing. The Hermitage was very nice.

If you just want a beach vacation and don't mind roughing it, there's probably nothing cheaper than Oualie in the off season. You can walk out of the room and into the Caribbean in less than twenty steps. Just know that it's bare bones at best and eat food elsewhere.

Room Tip: There are rooms 30' from the beach and some 50' from the beach. Ask the concierge when booki...

Ate at the restaurant twice and enjoyed the food. Also hung out at the beach for a relaxing and peaceful afternoon. Beautiful views!! Ouali is a quiet spot perfect for reading, gazing at the sea and swimming in the calm waters.

Although the hurricane season we had 10 days of sunshine with minimal rain at night only. Because of the season hardly anyone was there so we had the glorious beach to ourselves -white sand, palm trees, the whole lot. The beach is shallow for a long way, without stones, so ideal for young kids. Real plus is that it s a family hotel, the family having a fascinating 350 year old history as Nevisians since an ancestor was sent to the colonies instead of execution for being on the wrong side against Oliver Cromwell. Rooms are cabins on the beach, literally yards from the shore. Strongly recommended except for (a) sand flies (b) food too heavy and overcooked - although other places are available a taxi-drive away. Definitely a winner

Room Tip: All are cabins on the beach, facing the sea, so no real preference

Hotel is in a good location next to a very nice beach were you can exprerience views of amazing sunsets, but thats all really.

Rooms are not great and are not cleaned properly. Food at the restaurant is nice but I think overpriced. Bar is good with very nice coctails of the day. Breakfast was very good and the hotel staff really keen and very friendly.

My wife, 2 adult children, and I spent a week at Oualie Beach Resort on Nevis for a week of diving with Scuba Safari (on site at the resort). The resort was great, small houses along the beach with great scenery and snorkeling. The food was superb, especially the evening meals, and service was very good. People were friendly. The dive operation was excellent, very good boats, helpful staff, and a variety of dive sites. Having the dive operator on site was very convenient and they were very careful loading and unloading our gear. We can recommend the resort and the dive operator.

My wife & I stayed there during the slow season, & Oualie Beach was a great base of operations for visiting Nevis.

First, the hotel itself. The room & location were all we could ask for. The room was clean, with a nice bed, & just steps from the beach. Lydia kept it spotless, & she was nice to talk with. The location is beautiful, with views across the water to St. Kitts. Especially in the morning, we sat on the porch & admired the view. The island is small enough that you can drive anywhere on it fairly quickly, so Oualie Beach is convenient to everywhere.

The more important factor was the people. They were outstanding. Stacy contacted us a few weeks beforehand asking if she could make any arrangements. She was patient & friendly with my many questions, & she made things much easier for us by making arrangements for car (including both Nevis & St. Kitts), water taxi, & rain forest tour before we arrived. Once we arrived, she greeted us & treated us like old friends. I told her that she is one of the greatest things about the hotel, & she is. We also enjoyed visiting with Pat at the front desk. She is outgoing & a wealth of information about the New River Estate area. In fact, I recommend talking with her before visiting it, as she adds so much information about what is there. Of course, we just enjoyed visiting with her generally. Faith, the general manager, is a bit more quiet, but also friendly. She is also keen on service. When we left our laptop at the front desk because it was too big for the room safe, she sent Vernon to our room the next morning to install a bigger room safe.

We also must mention Tim at the restaurant. By day he is a mild-mannered postal worker. By evening, he is an awesome server at the restaurant. After one night he remembers names & food preferences. The dinner food prices are average for hotels in the area, but we returned for dinners because of Tim.

Just a couple hints. First, visit with the staff. They are helpful, friendly, & know many things about the island that written guides won't tell you. Second, driving on Nevis is easy, even on the left side. There are some bad potholes on one stretch of the road to Charlestown, & remember the swale just below the entrance to the hotel. Finally, we cut our food budget by eating our main meal of the day at lunch (on days Tim was not working dinner), & buying lighter fare at the Ram's Supermarket below Charlestown & keeping it in the refrigerator for supper & breakfast.
