This turned out to be our favorite place in the Kullu valley,it's closer to the river, closer to the mountains and has great views. Food served the restaurant too is great.
A must-stay place if in manali.Chuck the so called resorts and go for this one.

We are long term travelers with basic needs - general level of cleanliness and enough space for our (minimal) stuff. This place met our needs and would have exceeded them except for a few crucial issues. If they finish off the place and fix the rough edges, it will be great. I would have rated this place lower, but in the end they made up for some of the issues.

The complaints - In contrast to what they said, they did not have running hot water in the cheaper downstairs rooms; it wasn't working. After our 16 hr government bus ride, all we got was a bucket shower, and it was cold that day! The window in the bathroom didn't even close. Next, the rooms don't have heat. You have to rent a space heater, which doesn't really do much to warm the room unless you leave it on all day and the power doesn't go out (which it does). The main building is completely open to the outdoors on the bottom floor and top floor. The top floor isn't completed at all and is completely open. Don't they know heat rises?

How the made up for it - 1.) didn't charge us for internet, 2.) didn't charge us for heaters, 3.) the second/last day they let us shower in a different room with running hot water. Also, the restaurant has big space heaters, which do actually warm you up, and they didn't protest to us spending most of our time in the restaurant just soaking up the warmth.

The rooms have enough space and are clean. The beds are moderately comfy. More importantly the beds have plenty of bedding to keep you warm. I do suggest taking a sleep sack though. Even our cheap room had a good view, except of course that means you have windows..which aren't exactly doing you any favors to keep heat inside.

The restaurant was awesome. The service was fast and friendly. As I mentioned before, it was warm. The food was also really good (some of the best in 2 months around India). The prices are also pretty average, which we were surprised because of the isolated location.

The location is good if you want to be within walking distance to the ski mountain. However, it is a 30 min taxi (500R) or 1 hr bus ride to the town of Manali.

If they fix the hot water, and find a way to keep the rooms a bit warmer, this place will be fantastic.

Dear :ofeDocumented,

Thank you for your review and your kind words about our Hotel. Regarding your complaints:

- No running hot water in Old Wing Rooms - actually it is available but perhaps on that day there were some issues. Apologize for the same
- Window in the bathroom does not open - please advise which room number you stayed in, so that we can fix the same
- We will be completing all the work on our property in Summer 2012, by which time the top floor would be completed.

Thank you for acknowledging the efforts we made to make up for the issues you faced. We are glad that overall you had a good stay here. We look forward to your visit to Hotel Iceland again

Warm Regards

Hotel Iceland run by Khem Raj Thakur and his family is a quaint hotel situated in the middle of the Solang Valley. I went up there with my daughter to learn skiing. We learnt of Hotel Iceland from our friend in Mumbai Ms Meher D'souza who has gone to Solang on several expeditions.
We took the night bus from Delhi to Manali, run by the Himachal Tourism. Morning saw us at Manali market, where Khem Raj Thakur had sent a taxi to bring us 13 kilometres uphill into the mountains.
We were greeted on arrival by Khem Thakur, who gave us a view of the glorious mountains. It was a wonderful experience to wake up each morning, stand on the balcony to view the first rays of the sun on the snow clad peaks.
Hotel Iceland is an excellent place to learn skiing. The Hotel has all the infrastructure, ski boots, sking sticks and the instructors are patient in teaching you the elements of skiing. I did learn the basics; after which I was confident enough to try the main slopes uphill. There is a large ski slope on the tableland above the hotel. Many tourists from Manali come here to have fun in the snow - buggy rides, carting or just to experience snow. The ITBP police recruits also come here to learn to ski. During our stay, officers from the Navy were at Hotel Iceland also learning to ski.
Food at the hotel is varied, generally continental since there are many foreign tourists who come to stay here. The rooms are comfortable not many luxuries, the staff mainly from the village are helpful and friendly.
It is an ideal location for treks into the mountains, learning to ski or a place for romance since you could just cuddle up sitting in your room watching the snow at its gently falls covering both the trees and the ground with a its white blanket

We just headed to Manali without any booking just the car and us for a long needed break away from Delhi's maddening rush. We got to know about this place from a common friend who had satyed here and highly recommended it. Eventhough we were without booking Mr.Khem accomodated us all in the great rooms very basic but very warm. I was happy there wasnt any TV...!
I reached there at arnd 10 at night so couldnt really see anything outside. But when i got up in the morning i was amazed - The Great view of the mountains and the forest with a small rivulet gushing on the side. A true sensory delight.
We stayed there for 3 days after that we had to move out because they had prior booking. I would sit all day by the stream and take pictrs.

Wonderful place, especially warm hosts Khem and his brother. Friendly atmosphere. It was a relief to be away from the crowds at Manali. Location is real good with lots of options for short walks and longer treks. Also enjoyed the other guests at the place as all of them had come to enjoy nature and adventure and were all very friendly.

Rooms are basic but comfortable and cosy. We were put up in the new wing first, but my wife could not bear the smell of the new paint so we were accomodated in the old wing. The staff was very helpful in the move.

Loved the campsite near Beas Kund. We stayed there overnight. Was slightly apprehensive as it was the first time camping with my 4 year old daughter. But we had a great time inspite of the chilly weather especially in the evening.

Solang was our first stop on our wonderful trip to Ladakh and we couldn't have had a better place to begin the holiday...Hotel Iceland. A small 4 stored hotel (the 4th floor is yet to be completed) which exudes warmth, b'cos of it's wood panelled floors and good service. The key to enjoy your stay in Hotel Iceland is to ask for the rooms facing the mountains, ask for the 3rd floor (4th if it is ready by the time you take the trip)....the balconies are large enough to seat two people comfortably, wherein you can relish the tea and catch up on your reading too. If nothing else, the view of the mountains and the adjoining River Beas is breathtaking.

The rooms are warm (No televisions, though they had a connection for the same) and more importantly clean bathrooms. Hot bath water was available only in the morning. However, hot drinking water is provided on request throughout the day. Laundry services are offered too...though we did not avail of them,

Food is palatable at best with breakfast being the best meal, complete with cornflakes, bread, eggs (made to your choice) and a warm Indian breakfast. Choice of beverages are tea, coffee, hot chocolate and lemon tea (worth sampling). Lunch and Dinner are normal Indian fare.
