“Comfort in the jungle”
Reviewed 14 September 2013

You get to the hotel by river canoe. The town outside the hotel is good to see, its like going back in time. Hotel is simple but nice, a screened well is open to the elements but gives a good view of the Napo river valley. The animal rescue centre is a good trip and is booked though the hotel. The only disappointment was the lack of wild live as this is only the start of the rain forest. Food is good and plentiful.

Went with gate 1 tour to this scenic resort. Enjoyed the canoe trip to get there on the river.
Enjoyed seeing another part of the Amazon basin a little different from Peruvian amazon.
Rooms comfortable but no air conditioning so a little warm. We did many interesting and
adventurous things such as hiking, rafting, swimming in river, and animal rescue park. The resort
very pretty and the food was OK. Have a nice pool and bar area to relax. Need to pay more attention to rooms as we had no towels but management did their best to take care of problems.
The only thing we didn't like was that if you wanted coffee with dinner or lunch you had to order from bar and there was a charge. Think they could offer it with meals. All in all a really nice place to visit.

We came there by boat because ferry didn't run any more. First impression wasn't best one -due to a low river level we accosted on the beach instead on a regularly used dock which made us walk a bit longer than expected. Fortunately hotel stuff took over a core of luguage and made it easier. What folloved erased this first impression completely : friendly stuff, good food, big clean nicely decorated room with a balcony providing a beautiful view on the river. Next day was even better : we got a tour through jungle lead by Roberto, one of the best guides I met traveling around the world. Thorough knowledge of jungle spieces and a great way of presenting it. After a 2 hours hike through jungle we visited animal rescue center and the end of this morning session we had a tubing - kind of rafting where a truck tire tube is used as a raft. Great experience. In the after non Roberto took us to visit a butterfly centre and a pottery making family. Great place which wouldn't be the same without such devoted employees. Once again thanks Roberto.

I had heard many great comments about Casa del Suizo from friends who had stayed here and said it was great for families: all meals are included so no cooking is required and the kids could swim in the pool all day while the parents relaxed, read, and chilled out. I came here with my wife and another couple and we had a great time chatting at meals, which were buffet style, all you can eat. The quality of the meals is good, though drinking water is expensive ($1.50 for a small bottle). The rooms with a view to the river are nice and there is a hammock in which to relax; showers were hot, soap, shampoo and towels are provided, and the beds were comfortable. We didn't have the problem with bug bites like some other guests have had. Lack of TV in the rooms and lack of cell phone coverage was a plus for us: helped us disconnect from daily life so we could relax.

The rainforest activities are nothing spectacular - 1 hour walks and then some relaxed floating down the river in inner-tubes or balsa raft - but I did enjoy the visit to the butterfly farm.

Drawbacks: 1) very little noise isolation from one room to the next, so if you have noisy neighbors, you'll have problems. 2) The hotel doesn't separate smoking from non-smoking rooms: we had a chain-smoking neighbor 2 doors down whose smoke drifted into our room, 3) Contrary to expectations, the Casa del Suizo is not an isolated jungle lodge but situated next to a town. Loud, heavy-beat music all night Friday and all night Saturday meant the "idyllic" sounds of the river and rainforest got drowned out, 3) Much of the staff speaks very little English. e.g., I spent time translating what our guides were saying to a non-Spanish speaking friend who was with me. 4) An airport nearby opened up in 2012, which means you can hear airplanes flying in while hiking in the rainforest.

Cost: $99 per person per night. All meals included. Not included: drinks, visit to butterfly farm, visit to animal shelter. By Ecuadorian standards, the price is a little on the high side.

Overall, I had a nice time here, as did my wife and friends. It is a good, though not great, place to stay.

After a short motorized canoe trip, one arrives at this lodge in the rain forest. The rooms, in duplex cabins, are large and have screens to the outside with a porch with great views of the Napo River. There is no air conditioning, but we were there in the rainy season and needed blankets to sleep!

The food is ample buffets; not fancy, but very good.

There's a beautiful pool overlooking the rain forest and the property is well landscaped.

We were on a tour, so don't know the exact cost.

The rooms were simple with a balcony with a hammock then beds facing the river view then bath behind the wall but a great place to relax. We were on Gate 1 tour so cannot comment on value but the food was plentiful and pretty good. The Indian Village, Pet saving station and a jungle walk were all very interesting but still left time to relax around the pool. The August weather was warm but not like Florida or Texas-the water felt good on the balsa raft ride. All the staff and guides did a good job. The bar has reasonable beer but expensive mixed drinks. Luckily there was Chilean box wine that was very drinkable for $2 a glass or $20.00 the box (serves 3 thirsty wine drinkers) since drinks @8.50 a glass is on the high side. I am altitude challenged so I enjoyed this two day time at a lower altitude. I would go here again. It is not the real jungle but it was fun anyway. Go down into the town if it lacks realism for you.

When you travel to the Amazon your adventurous mood comes up on the surface for some reason. This hotel perfectly combines good service with organised activities. We did rafting, visiting a park with hurt or caged animals, visiting the Quichua tribe e.t.c
The hotel is made of wood, has great view and the rooms are comfortable with terrace in each room. There is also a pool open all day which we used mostly in the afternoon combined with drinks from the bar.
On the disadvantages there is no signal on the phones and of course no internet access except a special area where the use was charged. In addition, there is no air condition but that's something I didn't care because I liked to feel the weather there. There is a fan in each room though.
The food was sometimes excellent sometimes not so much but it was ok.
For me and our group the lack of amenities worked as a plus contributing in the illusion that we are in the jungle away from much civilization.
I definitely recommend it!

Room Tip: Corner rooms ftw!
