Hacienda San Agustin De Callo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 20 August 2012

It has been my second visit to San Agustin and it was just as excellent as my first one a couple of years ago. The setting is spectacular beneath Cotopaxi this Hacienda has used old Inca ruins to create a cosy, tranquil and unique atmosphere. I felt extremely privileged to stay in this historic site. However, it is still a hotel and certainly not a budget option and understandable it raises once expectations. I felt that on both occasions all my expectations where met good margin. The rooms are very comfortable and the furniture and decorations suits the hacienda extremely well. All the meals are freshly prepared and there is always a choice of 2-3 different dishes. The food is delicious and high quality. Only once the kitchen made a mistake of only having fish and seafood dishes for dinner. No problem for me, but some other guest didn’t like fish.

Another drawback is booking and advance payment. It took quite a number of emails until everything was settled. This, however seems to be a problem with a lot of hotels in Ecuador. As mentioned above it is not a budget place and I night visit well set back around $340 for a standard room, but I would recommend adding another $50 for one of the suites. It is well worth the extra money.

San Agustin De Callo is a perfect place to stay when in Cotopaxi. Our room ( Inca Tambo ) was spacious and beautiful for 2 adults and 2 children. Log fires lit in the evening , hot water bottles in our bed at night , fresh flowers in our room and even bathroom, every small detail has been taken care of.
Staff are efficient and friendly and go out of their way to make you feel so at home .
Food is wonderful , the breakfast is amazing and dinners from wood burning oven served in dining room
quite spectacular .
Feeding the llamas, horse riding and looking after the haciendas cats and dogs were amongst my children's highlights.
I find it hard to convey just quite how wonderful and special a stay at San Agustin is.
Not to be missed if you are visiting Ecuador .

On our last day in Ecuador we planed to visit Cotopaxi National Park. Seeing photos of the Hacienda i fell in love with it! From our hotel in Quito i phoned to check if the Hacienda was close enough to visite the National Park with horses. I got a positive answer in good English. The manager told me the name of the bus stop. The bus let us off in the middle of nowhere...we had to cross (to run for our lifes) the high way and e truck took us to the Hacienda.... We got a welcome drink and waited....the only person in charge of the hotel tald us, that the horses will be ready in half en hour----then we had e real great surprise with feeding Alpakas!....waited a bit longer and got on the horses. The first half hour was exciting....beautiful landscape.....then we found ourselfs in a little forest, no view and with the feeling that this guy is not taking us to the National Park..... 1 hour forest.....and back to the Hacienda. A bit dissepointed we got back to the Hotel. I read that to go into the Park you have to be at the entrance before 15.00. I asked the young man in charge of everything if he could organize a ride for us into the Park before they close....o.k. we waited and waited.....but he didn't have time to check for us....it was too late already and we understood that we won't see the wild horses at the Park... Finally he came to us and told us that there is a cheep that can take us for 9o $ for 1 hour into the park----well we gave up already and spent a lot for the horse rideing and decieded to eat our meal..... The Inka room was very dark and to see my 2 daughters and the food i had to make some efforts. The food was dissepointing and when i saw that the price was 35$ i felt cheated-our 3" table friends" got the same food + wine and paied 27$-also too much....We waited and waited and could finally pay ....We got a small discount because of the dissapointment and instead of calling a taxi he sent us to the bus stop with somebody very nice that picked up one of the workers. He took us to a street where 14 full busses didn't stop and no way to call a taxi----thanks god the 2 nice Americans and one Ecuadorian lady we met at the dinner stopped and took us back to Quito!!!! The guy at the hotel we called in the morning should have told us to get first into the Park and then get to the Hacienda....and the day would have been expensiv, with a dissapointing meal-but at least we would have seen a little bit of Cotopaxi National Park!

Room Tip: we did not sleep at the Hacienda, the only person that was responsible did his best but we did not g...

What a beautiful hacienda, welcomed by llamas which our 6 children hand fed, going fishing and then horse riding with the eccentric gaucho Jose. After a lovely dinner and musical entertainment going back to our room with fires burning in both the bedroom and bathroom, you would think that was enough. But then you crawl into bed to find someone has placed a hot water bottle there for you as well. A great place and very personalised and unique. Loved it.

A definite "must" for travelers in Ecuador. This beautiful hacienda is one of the most charming & lovely places we have ever stayed. Our arrival into cozy suite, with 3 fireplaces blazing, not toddies, & an elegant dinner for two in the amazing room of Incan walls, candlelight, & silver.
The gardens & surroundings are first class...a St Bernard & llamas & horses to play with.
Meals are outstanding & there is attention to detail in everything done here...excursions, room service, antiques & family heirlooms from an old Ecuadorian family.
Quite possibly the best bathroom anywhere in room #2.

Room Tip: Ask for room #2 if you can afford it...or a rom in the main Casona house.

An unexpected boutique hotel located close to Quito. The building is situated on the remains of an Inca site which had been re-used by the Augustinians.

The hacienda has comfortable public areas with old photographs of the family and Inca walls everywhere, especially in the dining room. The ambiance is friendly An unusual aspect is feeding the llama herd carrots by hand.

Food is plentiful and good quality. The fish is especially good. Worth a visit.
