Hacienda San Agustin De Callo

My wife and I visited the hacienda for lunch while on a day trip to the Cotopaxi Volcano. The hacienda is very authentic colonial establishment built within amazing Inca ruins. Lunch was typically Andian and very good. The views are spectacular. the staff was very welcoming and presented a surprise visit of 15 llamas. My visit to the hacienda will be a memory that I will always treasure. The are several very nice guestrooms with fireplaces. But we only visited for the day from Quito and did not stay overnight.

After a day at Cotopaxi Volcano we arrived down a dirt road in the middle of seemingly nowhere to this stunning hacienda. Other reviewers have covered the basics but in most rooms you will have a portion of Inca wall uncovered along with open fireplace and frescoed walls, free local chocolates and a huge bathroom. Top it off with a stroll through the lovely gardens, dinner in the old Inca dining room and a sleep in total silence and this place is a real treat. Beware its always windy here and often cold so come prepared or just snuggle in the warm cosy lounge to read a book and gaze out the picture windows at Cotopaxi. The night we were there the cloud cleared at sunset and the mountain turned orange. Incredible. Don't miss it. Our only regret was only spending one night.

From the moment you see Hacienda San Agustin de Callo you know you are somewhere special. I believe we were the only guests, certainly I didnt see any others and we dined alone in an old Inca walled room. We were allowed to feed the llama and giant St Bernard and were given free range of the beautiful grounds.
Our room had beautiful frescoes, an open fire, and an exposed part of an old Inca wall.
We felt like the luckiest people to have stayed here. If you get the opportunity, please do. You wont regret it. Sincerely the best place I have ever stayed.

We spent two days there and it was the best stay of our trip.

It's in the middle of nowhere, with a view on the surrounding volcanos. The hacienda is build on an ancient Inca site, and the rooms have some very nice and well preserved archeological parts. The dinning room has a very nice atmosphere.

Upon arriving you can have a tour of the hacienda with some explanations on how it was built.

The bed rooms are large and welcoming, with a fireplace. The lounge is really a great place, with the view on the volcanos, a fireplace, hot and cold beverages,

You can have some horse riding tours, and the staff is really great. They were incredible with our kids (special thanks to the cooking team who gave them nearly a full day cooking lesson).

The food is really good, with a note for the best breakfast we had, even if all the meals are excellent.

To stay in a 15th century Inca temple is enough in itself but to be lulled to sleep by a roaring log-fire, cuddled-up on a feather mattress with handmade bedcovers and hot-water bottle, is glorious experience.

A royal breakfast, in a dining room with fine Inca stone walls, thatched ceiling and trapezoidal doors, we looked up to the snowcap of Cotopaxi mountain, framed by a deep blue sky.

We checked our emails and World news via fast, complimentary wi-fi and in a central Inca courtyard we fed carrots to a herd of llamas.

A recently completed road took us to shallow Limpiopungo (lake), in 50,000 acre Cotopaxi Park where we had a tasty picnic prepared By San Agustin's chef.

Dinner was excellent, made more so by the utterly charming and sophisticated owner, Mignon Plaza, who entertained us with intriguing stories, especially of San Agustin's history.

All of San Agustin's staff were helpful and prompt.

After a 2-night stay (the recommended minimum stay), we left in a rented car for Lago San Pablo, Imbabura, past Quito's very fine new airport.

Room Tip: ask for a room or suite in the main temple.

We went there for lunch in our way to Riobamba. The food was delicious. The hotel is a stunning old hacienda built over real Inca ruins. There is a old temple perfectly maintained which is now a Catolic church. We loved the place so much that we decided to come back and stay for one or two nights. The views of the Cotopaxi volcan are stunning. Highly recommended.

The drive from the Quito airport took over 2 hours (lots of traffic which is how I think of Ecuador)....it was a Friday early evening. We arrived in the dark, dropped our bags in the room, and went immediately to dinner. Dinner is served in the Inca building which serves as the dining room for lunch and dinner. Our room was very spacious - a sitting area, a bedroom, and a HUGE bathroom. It was cold when we were here and we needed the 3 fireplaces (one per room). The hot water bottle in the bed was great. It was chilly in the morning as the fires had burned out. The food for breakfast and dinner was very good. Breakfast includes cold/hot selections and is a bit slow so allow plenty of time if you have a pick-up booked. They accommodated our request for boxed lunches. It's a lovely property and really charming and the tour of the house is a nice touch, however, if you like modern ammenities you will be disappointed. We had the good fortune of seeing the peak of Cotopaxi when the clouds cleared around 5:45 p.m. one evening. No such luck when we drove up the mountain - rain & very cold winds!
