“Great outdoor hospitality, very high quality”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

Three of us stayed at Buffalo Outdoor Center this week. Great people, fabulous facilities (we stayed in the new Lodge), and beautiful area. Highly recommend it and lots to do - whether you want to just chill out and enjoy the view, spend time with family/friends in great environment, see wildlife (Elk!), canoe one of the finest rivers in the country, hike, or ride on a real deal zip line.

We've traveled a lot and seen a lot of places. This should be on your list.

We're so happy you enjoyed your time with us here in upper Buffalo River country! THANK YOU for the very kind review. We know it takes time and thought to post one and we greatly appreciate you doing so. The elk will be out and about throughout the winter, so perhaps you can come back this way soon for an Ozark Mountain escape!

We stopped by on our way through from seeing the wild elk. It was a really nice shop. They had a little bit of everything. We even looked into renting a couple of cabins from them. They also set up canoeing on the Buffalo River. It was a beautiful store for being in the middle of nowhere!

Thank you for your kind review of our new store! It is several times larger than the facility we worked out of our first 35 years; we are pleased you liked it, as well as our gift items and apparel. The elk will be quite visible all fall and winter, so drop in and say hello if you find yourself in our neck of the Buffalo River woods again!

I have done the 'Dragon's Breath Zipline' in Labadee, Haitit and Zip Line Canopy Tour in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

My experience in Ponca, AR was better than either of those other two zip-line tours.

The staff was extremely friendly and made sure to create an atmosphere of fun while being safe. As we did the zip line they would make jokes, give instructions, talk about the area and its history all while documenting our experience by taking pictures. So all we had to do was listen and just have fun.

There are a total of eight zip lines to do and they are all a bit different, adding variety and excitement to the experience. The area is beautiful and there is plenty of wildlife and points of interest to see.

I would highly recommend this zip line tour to anybody looking for excitement in the outdoors. I found the price to be a little steep but it is well worth it.

What can we say but THANK YOU for such a wonderful review of our zip line experience, especially your comments about our staff. We think our tree team is tops, but when a guest feels that way? Well, that's the ultimate compliment. We do care about the fun you have, but also very much about your safety. We're so glad you found it to be all those things.

We hope you can make it back to Ponca this fall or winter---fall color is beautiful right now, plus, the elk are out and about all winter long, which makes for a lovely day trip from the Fort Smith area!

I am not much of an adventurer but this was AWESOME! If someone had told me about climbing the tower at zip line 1, I might have backed out:) But if you can get past the first one, you will have a blast. The staff was great and made you feel so safe and comfortable. The views are just amazing and I would do this zip line again.

You may be a beachbumwantabe, but a ziplinewantabe you are definitely not! :) Congrats on taking that first big step off Tower 1 and wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee---the rest is history! THANKS for the high five on our zip line guides. Like you, we think they're tops in the trees, too! Also, we appreciate all the photo posts...they will be helpful to future guests; plus, your comments are inspiring to others needing some added encouragement to "zip on!"

My husband and I had a great time! The only problem were any time we went to get in the hot tub wasps would start to appear. Also, we didn't know that our dogs weren't allowed on the trails, the website only says they are not allowed on the Lost Valley. Other than that we had a lot of fun hiking the trails in the area and the view from our deck was amazing. Leaving was hard.

We are so very pleased you enjoyed your time with us...we agree that leaving the awesome view at Cabin X, as well as this beautiful national park are difficult! We apologize for the wasp that kept coming to visit. Should this ever happen again, please don't hesitate to let us know in the office. We will send someone up pronto to find the source (usually a nest somewhere nearby) and end the worry. Regarding the dogs on the Lost Valley trail, thank you for the heads up on that---the information was updated immediately upon reading your post.

My husband and I stopped in here on the way through Ponca. They have a really great gift shop - lots of unique items and souvenirs. They had great items for people of all ages. My husband found a hat with an embroidered elk on it that he just had to have. Definitely worth stopping in and checking out!

Thank you so much for the kind review of our new store! We are very pleased to now offer visitors to the Ponca area an expanded variety of gift and apparel items, as well as a deli, gasoline, grocery items and enlarged restroom facilities. As you know, Ponca is quite small and limited in its services, so we are glad to have been able to provide you with a happy shopping adventure!

First time visit to the Buffalo River area. Directions found on the BOC website were easy to follow. The BOC store closes at 5pm. As there is not a store in Ponca, make sure you bring the food items you will need. FYI Cabin #1 and #2 are located along Hwy 43, which did not have much evening traffic. However, headlights do hit the cabins. We stayed in cabin #2 on the first night and the Songbird cabin on the second. Both slept 6 with a bed on the main floor and 2 beds located in the loft with the cabins having an open floor plan. The kitchen had all the items needed to prepare your food. The area was in the woods and is a beautiful sight. Beware, there is no cellphone reception nor WiFi (the Mountain Top cabins are now WiFi equipped). There is no TV reception. However, the have DVD players. Movies are available in the BOC store for free. Had a great time on the Buffalo River float with great service from the BOC staff. If you looking for a quiet getaway, this is our place.

Wow, what an informative review! Other visitors to the Ponca area, as well as future BOC guests, should find it quite helpful!

We sincerely appreciate the gracious words about our outfitting services and the cabins you stayed in. Perhaps you can join us again this fall when the elk are bugling and the autumn leaves are in their full glory!

Let our deli build you a mile-high sandwich crafted with fantastic locally-baked breads, natural meats, cheeses and fresh veggies! When it comes to adventure activities, we can keep you as busy as you want to be! Our zip line is hugely popular and open March through November. When it comes to hiking or canoeing, there's none finer in Arkansas and arguably mid-America. Elk watching is also a popular activity. The Ponca area is home to a large elk herd which roams the Boxley Valley and can frequently be seen from the comfort of your car. The best seasons for elk viewing are fall and winter. ... more   less
