Booked our holiday through Directski.com and our holiday company was Balkan Holidays. Had to pay extra baggage cost for our board bags. Good flight. Bulgaria was 2 hours ahead. Transfer was 3 hours with a wee stop half way at a petrol station to get food etc. Hotel was lovely. Large open spaces. Clean. Tidy. Big room. We had a balcony over looking the front. Good for people watching. Small fridge in room for the mini bar but you could push that stuff aside and keep your own drinks in it. Friendly people. Slight lack of english speaking which could be a problem if you had issues.

Hotel was a 5min walk to the Gondola...didn't bother with the shuttle because it was so close. Gondola takes half hour to top. Limited lifts were open...but they did open more later in the week...ie: when it snowed 3 feet over 3 days.

Locals said the best time is the end of Feb for good snow conditions. The runs that were open were complete due to LOADS of snow cannons. Can watch the mountain cameras on you TV...which was useful...gave you temps up the hill too.

Food was good. Breakfast was a cold selection part...cheese, ham, tomatoes etc. And a hot section...eggs, beans, sauages etc. Help yourself to toast, tea (herbal) coffee, water, cereal, juice, fruit. TIP if you want Tetley take teabags with you as all tea is herbal.
Dinner was a cold and hot selection again. Soup too. Desserts. Fruit. Toast. Pay for drinks. Staff friendly and helpful. Cleared used plates away quickly which was good if your eyes were bigger than your belly!

Didn't use the pool or bowling..too busy being up the hill, eating and drinking. But they looked swimmingly.

Went to a few nice bars. Harry's Bar and The Crown. Near the top of Pirin St (main one up the gondola) turn left at the traffic lights turn first right and wander up for Harry's. Or turn left at lights and go further along, past fortuna and turn right past the Bali supermarket.

Very good resort for budget, last minute. Check snow report before you go. Can't fault the hotel on anything. We has an amazing week and it was over christmas so very special time of year.

This is a four star hotel with one star service. The facilities are decent, the rooms are pleasant, the food is OK, but the staff rank as the least friendly people I have met in Bulgaria. The problems mounted during our stay, and so eventually we asked to see the Manager, who was completely indifferent to our concerns, and I suspect this is where the problem lies. We visited several other hotels during our stay (including theexcellent Kempinski), just for a drink in the bar, and found the staff to be invariably friendly. Ah well.

Just returned from Bansko our second trip in two years. Decided to upgrade to a better hotel than the previous year due to lack of things to do in the evenings for Children. The facilities in the hotel Strazhite were great - bowling alley with pool tables and arcade games, indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room excellent and rarely busy. The rooms were basic but clean. We were on the 3rd floor facing the main road - so a little noisy and you were unable to have a window open. However, the food was very poor and far from varied. For a 4 star hotel we were all highly disappointed with the standard of meals on offer which consisted of burgers, chips, tinned vegetables, chicken and rice (it was a case of hunt the chicken) and spaghetti bolagnase (which again was more spaghetti than mince). The food was only luke warm but thank good ness for the microwave which was there to reheat your food. I won't even mention deserts as these were even worse. After a hard days ski-ing we all felt we needed something a little more substantial to what we were being offered. We ended up eating out on several ocassions and enjoyed some excellent meals. The breakfast was only slightly better.

With the exception of the bar staff the hotel staff were surly and very unfriendly. The reception staff in particular were highly unhelpful. A word of warning if you have opted for a three bedroomed room the third bed is a single sofa bed. The mattress is only 2' wide and not suitable for anyone over the age of 6!!!. When we complained we were given an extra 2 inch mattress but the point was that it was not suitable for a 14 year old child.

On a positive note the ski-ing in Bansko was excellent. Yes the queues to the gondola were long but if you get up there for 8.30am you only queue for about 30 mins. If you are a late riser after 10.30 there is not waiting time. The conditions on the slopes were fantastic and we all thoroughly enjoyed the ski-ing.

Hi there, I recently came back from bansko and i must say it was fantastic. I stayed in a four star hotel, ok the food was'nt prezzo or chop house standard but it was varied and good. Yes there is alot of building work going on, but this country is like 30-40 years behind the rest of europe so please look beyond this. Ask yourself what you are going for , if its skiing i was most impressed. There are nice long wide runs that are well groomed and the ULEN ski school was fantastic, they spoke good english and were very polite. Infact all the bulgarian peolpe that i met and spoke to were lovely. I read reviews saying how rude they were, well all i can say is if you speak rudely to people you will get the same back.
Infact i liked the place so much we are going again in the end of march. We need to help these countries to progress not leave them to struggle.
And yes there are q's for the gondola, so get up early and get up the mountain (thats what you are going for) you can get drunk and stay up till the early ours in the uk.

Myself and my partner have just returned from our first Neilson ski-ing trip to Bansko, Bulgaria. A friend recommended not only Bansko but the Strazhite Hotel.

After a slightly longer than expected transfer to the resort (due to snowy weather as far down as Sofia) we arrived at the hotel and found our room to be bright, spacious and more than adequate with a fairly modern bathroom. My only criticism would be that there was no safe within the room.

Food, however, was extremely poor and we ate out every night apart from the first night. If I was to go again, I would definitely avoid the half board option.

Facilities in the hotel were great, swimming pool, sauna and steam room was fantastic after a day on the slopes.

The ski-ing is excellent for intermediates and there is more than ample ski-ing for a week . Snow conditions were excellent also. Only criticism would be the large queue for the gondola in the morning, however, this may have been due to it being Russian New Year. Be there early to beat the queues!!!!!

Bansko, itself is a lively town wth excellent apres ski. Mehanas are the way to go for food as you can try lots of different dishes for very little and beer is very, very cheap. There are a number of British type bars in the town, the best one being the Friendly Pub. The food is excellent and there is live British music every night between 8am and midnight. Two young Bulgarian males play guitars and their repertoire includes Elton John, Queen, Zutons, Scissor Sisters, James Blunt, Arctic Monkeys, Stereophonics and many many more.

There is a large amount of construction work ongoing in the town, however, this did not pose any problems for us at all and it was hardly even noticed.

Other apres ski activities include ten pin bowling, ice skating, bum boarding, skidoos, pizza/quiz night, bulgarian night.

All in all an excellent lower cost ski holiday which I would fully recommend.

Went here for Christmas, 17 of us in our group including adults, teenagers and young children. All treated very well and enjoyed our experience. We finished off every evening drinking in the hotel bar before retiring to clean and cosy bedrooms. Drinking chocolates are to die for and we should have owned shares in it by the end of our holiday. Only criticism was the food, but you do expect that in Bulgaria.

stay here - booked with iglu ski - march 05. Booked a weeks stay at the hotel including breakfast and evening meal. Now i know lots of people complain about the food in Bulgaria at ski resorts but myself, my son and other half found it perfectly adequate with enough variety, if it want gourmet dining it did us fine, we were there to ski!. We had a family studio room which was large and lovely, all amenities we requried and the hotel staff were polite and helpful, the pool facilites were a lovely bonus and we made use every evening of the indoor pool area.

All in all a great holiday at a great price. Dont expect much apres ski though, the town is quite small, although by now its probably expanded due to tourism quite a lot. but a great place to ski, great hotel and a lovely town.
