“A piece of history”
Reviewed 12 April 2014

This lodge was a British army field hospital built in the 1940's. After extensive renovation by the RSCN retaining some period features it is a great place to stay. Rooms are basic but perfectly adequate, with good hot showers. The evening meal was four courses, with a good salad range to start. Staff were very nice and helpful. Packed lunches available. Very convenient location for the Asraq Wetlands and the Shaumari Reserve.

Commendable recycling of the Old British military hospital. Free Wi fi in the lounge, Peaceful location, helpful staff and good food. The bedrooms are large and functional, the water pressure is a bit variable and if you want fancy toiletries take your own

Room Tip: The rooms are all in one block, if you struggle with stairs choose the lower floor

The hotel is nice (the food is very good) and the staff very friendly. Nevertheless it is quite expensive (starting from 69JD a night) and I think that is a little overpriced for what in the end is nothing more than a good room.

This lodge feels far away from everything, but it is well done. The rooms are spacious and clean and even with AC, and seem quite new. The original building is the common area and contains some interesting old photos. There is wifi available in the common area. The food is good and cooked by local people . The staff is very helpful and interesting to talk to.

We went one a half-day tour which included the wetlands sanctuary , the fort, and several other archeological sites, and ended with a very nice meal served in the home of a local family. On our way back Amman we stopped at two other desert castles, so it was a very full two days.

We decided last minute to go and visit the Castles of the Eastern Desert and booked in here.

It is a former British Military Hospital that has been renovated and converted to a Lodge, funded by US Aid, that is operated by locally employed Jordanians. It is set back from the main road and is pretty much the only option in the area.

The rooms are clean and functional. Do not visit expecting 5 star comforts and televisions, etc, but has great wi-fi.

We ate dinner here which was tasty and plentiful and the other food choices in the area seemed a bit hit and miss.

It also has a craft centre and other initiatives to create local employment.

In Azraq you have the castle to visit that you can wander around on your own and the Wetlands Centre which is excellent.

All in all a quiet place to visit but one which we very much enjoyed.

Special, somehow unique place. Very well kept, excellent service, nice breakfast. Clean, comfortable. Good value for money although there are cheaper alternatives available nearby. Highly recommended.

I like to call Azraq the "Backyard of Jordan" - no high-priority place to visit, but an important place to keep the country running. The junction of two highways - an oasis in former times - a place full of history and tragedy.
We visited the Azraq lodge several times over the years and always loved it. One of the few places in Jordan, where service and quality did not deteriorate over time!!!!
The staff is exceptionally friendly, rooms spottless and cozy and the food is excellent.
Tea and coffee for free all day round for over-night guests.
The rooms are located in the new building and are spaceous, the courtyard is perfect for kids with bikes or scooters, the public area in the old part of the lodge looks like a cozy living room.
We love that peaceful special place, but fast visitors should be warned. Azraq Lodge and its surrounding reveals its charme only after some patience. Sit on the terrace and enjoy the view over the (unfortunately dried out) wetlands. Watch sand stroms pass by in late spring. Sit in the restored small wetland area and wait what's happening. Buffalos or water snakes or a flock of birds will cross your path. Watch Lawrence of Arabia in the evening and visit the old castle where he stayed for a winter the next day. Or for the adventurous: drive to the east and search for Qasr al Burqa, a VERY special secluded place.
There is much to see and to do if you have time and patience.
