I am not reviewing the hotel but the restaurant section. We booked a table for my husband's birthday, I sent an email in advance to reserve our table and request a special desert with candles. The restaurant is part of The Great British Carvery group so when you look up the restaurant you are shown generic pictures of nice restaurants, they are not necessarily the actual restaurant. To be fair to The Kings Head, they do not have a restaurant, it is a pub, very large with lots of tables on the broads but not the most scenic part. It is literally across from Roy's in Wroxham. We arrived and the place was almost empty, it was a Wednesday. I felt embarrassed reserving a table once I got there as I soon realised it was not a fancy place, in fact it is a tired looking establishment, not much character or warmth. Waiters were not too welcoming, our wine bottle was "plonked" on the table, we were expected to open and taste, the waiter even joked at having to use a wine chiller, did not appear to have any clue what he was doing. And the Carvery? The lamb was awful, no one ate theirs, it tasted foul and woolly. The pork was overcooked and dry. The turkey was ok, veggies ok. My husband ordered a crumble and they put candles on it. We will not return and we do not recommend this establishment. You can get much much better, prices are cheap but so is the food!!

We went to the Kings Head at Wroxham ( Hoveton ) about 12 months ago and said we'd never go again because we had to wait ages to be seated even though it was only half full, the food was very average and the whole place needed a spring clean.

However ever place deserves a 2nd chance so as we were in Wroxham again to enjoy the sunshine we thought we'd try the carvery again. The restaurant section was only 25% full but again like last time there were about 6 people queueing to get seated. Once we were seated our drinks order were taken so we sat and waited. About 10 mins later the other member of staff asked us what we'd like to drink and we told her we'd already ordered so she went to chase them up.

The carvery was gammon, turkey or beef with a sausage and stuffing ball and all that was fine. The roast potatoes were also fine but the mash potatoes were awfull, they were dry, lumpy and luke warm and looked like they had been there ages. The vegs were also average with not much taste and luke warm.

When we paid the lady apologised for all the delays and explained that they were a member of staff short in the restaurant and in the bar which had created problems. Out of the two staff in the restaurant one was a trainee bless her, so between the two of them they had to seat people, take orders, bring food out for people not eating carvery, go to the bar and fetch drinks and take the money which was an impossible job.

Found it all a bit odd really as this is what we were told 12 months ago when we last went so they obviously have a staffing problem there. Also the chef who was carving the meat had to fill up the vegs/gravy in between serving customers which was also an impossible job.

So average food in my opinion, but two nice ladies trying to do their best, wont try it a 3rd time.

Decided to take my 86 year old nan, mum and auntie here for lunch, lovely views overlooking the water. Menu looked ok, quite a good selection, sun was shining so we sat outside.
Waited an hour for 3 portions of fish and chips and 1 cod and mash! When it did arrive the food was cold, maybe slightly warm but cold- it also looked like it had been sat around waiting for some time. We complained and the waiter took it back, and within minutes came back with all new, it looked more promising, and the bottom of the plate felt hot. However the food was warm, the fish and chips were barely blood temperature! NOT HAPPY. so we asked to see the manager! He was charm himself! He came out blamed the food being cold on us sitting outside, then proceeded to argue repeatedly with us,even why he tried it he wouldn't admit it was cold! And simply said it was hot when in the kitchen! He then got extremely cross and more rude because I pointed at him, proceeded to take the food off us and say you obviously don't want it, my poor nan had just taken a chip and her plate was snatched away!! We followed him inside, when he after some time came out with a plate of fish and chips and probed it to prove the temperature!! What happened to good old British customer service, I simple I am very sorry madam, let me look into this can I perhaps offer 4 fresh meals and a partial refund perhaps?

Anyway the cash was practically thrown into my hand and we had to leave!

Food does not become cold from sitting outside in the time it takes to walk from the kitchen, the plates were not hot and it did not look fresh!

Room Tip: Don't go there!!

Maybe it was because we arrived on a Sunday after what had clearly been a very busy Saturday, but this place was underwhelming. They had run out of real ale and the only menu available was the carvery - good choice of meats but the vegetables had been under heat lamps for some considerable time and looked (and tasted) tired.
My room was quite large and comfortable, but there were no toiletries in the shower and I hadn't brought any. The stairs to the first floor were dirty and smelt of cooking fat. When I arrived there were dirty glasses and bottles outside my room which I had to ask to be removed.
On plus side, they did a really good cooked breakfast - which almost made up for the rest of it.
