All in all, we had a lovely stay here. We had a Wowcher deal which was amazingly good value. We arrived about 4.40pm on the Friday, we were shown immediately to our room by Nathalie, who was very friendly and approachable the whole stay. We were told there were no towels as these were in the dryer, which wasnt a major problem to us, but i can see that some people would not have liked this at all.
We then went down and had the afternoon tea. Very nice indeed.
Our room was a twin with a lovely view over the bowling green. We were not disturbed by noise at all, which is great considering you are staying over a bar. The room was clean enough, though it was not serviced at all during the 2 night stay.
Breakfast was good, although she had run very low on milk on the 2nd morning so we couldnt have cereal.
I'm not sure I would pay full price to stay here, but in all it was a very pleasant experience.

Booked this hotel through Wowcher, the deal at first seemed a little too good to be true, but we had a most enjoyable stay. the place was clean, tidy and friendly and they were very accomadating to us and our young son. The food was lovely and reasonably priced. Found two great places nearby that kept our little boy entertained.....especially loved the Ice Cream Farm. Would definately go again we have had a great weekend.

Four of us visited The Red Lion on a “wowcher” deal. We paid £70 per couple, for 2 nights B&B, afternoon tea and chester zoo tickets ( the zoo tickets alone are £20 per adult!) – what a bargin!!

We were acknowledged, not too enthusiastically, by who we thought was the barmaid but who turned out to be the landlady. She gave us keys to our room and said as she was on her own, would we mind going up ourselves. She apologised that there was no clean towels but that they were still in the dryer and 3 hours later, they were still in the dryer! Our room was a lovely twin bedded room (room 1) no complains here except the bathroom was very cold. We did have an electric heater as the heating was not on in the bedrooms. Our friends didn’t
have an extra heater and were very cold.

Anyway, we ordered our afternoon tea which we wrongly assumed came with a jug of Pimms, but no bother, we ordered two jugs anyway. The afternoon tea was lovely, couldn’t fault it. We had a few beers in the bar and tried to get a taxi into Winsford (as there are no other pubs within walking distance of the Red Lion). No taxi firm would come for us but the lovely Pauline who works at the pub offered to drop us off and wouldn’t take a penny from us. We wanted to buy her some drinks on our return but we missed her both nights unfortunately.

On the Saturday we had to wait for breakfast to be laid up and had a choice of Weetabix or cornflakes (other B&B’s we have stayed at and that is many, have always had a larger choice of cereals but hey shouldn’t complain really for the price) followed by full English which was OK. We asked Natalie, the landlady, for our zoo tickets and she gave us cash to buy them as she was still having problems printing the tickets. We spent 4.5 hours at the zoo and had a lovely time although the weather was cold, very wet, even hail stoned at one point and windy!

On our return we just fancied nibbles so ordered the mezze and cheese board from the menu, so can’t comment on the restaurant food. That night we ventured into Tarporley which had about five pubs which we enjoyed – a bit more upmarket than Winsford we thought. It cost us £13 in a taxi each way. Winsford also cost us £13 in a taxi on our return. When we got back to the Red Lion we had a few drinks in the bar and chatted happily to the very friendly locals.

On Sunday morning they ran out of milk for breakfast and there was no tomato sauce, trivial I know but surely that shouldn’t happen……..

We had a lovely weekend but felt Natalie lacked in socialising skills for a landlady and seemed like she didn’t want to be there but then we found out she is leaving in August and maybe she just isn’t interested anymore? We did wonder how she made any profit from this “Wowcher” deal but then we did spend a fair bit over the bar in return.

Just one annoying thing, the church across the road, the bells ring every hour on the hour, all through the night even.............it helps to have a few drinks to help you sleep through the noise - the locals of course, dont notice it!

Yes we would recommend the red Lion – hopefully the new landlady will be a bit more welcoming!

In December 2012, myself and 3 friends purchased the Groupon voucher for Afternoon Tea with Pimms, so when it came up again I didn't hesitate in buying again.

However, this time the experience was dampened by the lack of customer service by one member of staff. We were told there was no Pimms due to it being out of stock, we were offered wine which we declined. The food was adequate but disappointed with the cake and double cream instead of clotted for Scones.

By our 2nd pot of tea we had run out milk, there was no-one to ask for more milk so we borrowed the milk from another table which at that point was empty. We told the waitress what we had done. She sat 2 customers down at the table and snatched the milk jug from our table and put straight onto theirs. She didn't even ask if we needed anymore or even apologise for taking it back. We were appalled that she did not give the other table fresh milk or ask us if we would like more.

When we handed the voucher in we mentioned that we had paid an extra £2 per couple for Pimms and that we should get a refund. Her customer service left a lot to be desired. She told us her manager was not around and that she would authorised refunds, she said she couldn't get hold of her and that no-one was in charge, she then proceeded to tell me she wasn't even bar staff and is kitchen staff. We stood our ground until she eventually and very reluctantly gave us our refund.

What should have been a pleasant afternoon left a bitter taste in our mouths.

Booked this Hotel after seeing it on Wowcher and we were very impressed. Clean tidy and friendly. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. We had the family room which was spacious and clean, and comfortable. Afternoon tea was included and this was very well presented and tasty.

Room Tip: We had family room
