We had never been to the lodge and wanted to check it out. The drive to get there alone is absolutely beautiful. We were so thrilled to be able to sit on the veranda and watch time fly by with Mt Barney in the background. We will certainly be back another time with friends in tow. Thank you for all your kindnesses and the loan of sunglasses made my day. Cheers Sharon Higson

We had a restful time at Mount Barney Lodge on December 30th. The campground is sparsely populated and family friendly with plenty of kids for our daughters to embark on adventures with. Facilities and staff are excellent. Nearby waterholes re-set the nerves almost instantly. Make sure you check in with staff in advance though as New Year's Eve saw a large group of 20 somethings shipping booze by the carton load into one of the homesteads. The rest of the evening kept the family awake in our tent with partying atop the hill and spontaneous Eurodiscos erupting metres away. The management handled the evening well and ensured that celebrations remained controlled, however, it did change the timbre of the vacation and encouraged us to leave a day early. There are nearby campgrounds that cater for people who like to mix grogging with camping. If you're thinking of taking your family to Mt Barney Lodge call first and ask whether they expect any spillover from Flannagans.

Hi Peter, thanks for posting your review about your stay with us. We have a great reputaion as being a wilderness retreat with a really nice vibe of family and bushwalking groups making up most of our guest mix. Although we can't choose the age group and plans of all of our guests, we have a number of (almost invisible!) management strategies that have evolved over the 25 years experience in running this business that has created this reputation.
New Years Eve is the only night of the year that we relax our 10pm noise curfew, but having said that, we still actively manage the night to ensure appropriate noise and behaviour occurs for the comfort of all guests. On the night you stayed, Innes did 8 rounds of the campground and buildings and interacted with the guests as needed. Most revellers we in bed by 12.30am, and at 1pm the campground was silent. In response to your feedback, we will email all New Years Eve guests our NYE noise policy in advance, so they have the option to stay at home if they are not wanting to share other's NYE celebrations.

Camp site is grassy and beautiful with some shade. Amenities are great and kept clean and tidy. Free hot shower. Innes and Tracey are fantastic. Truly enjoyed our experience here. Lower portal was absolutely stunning. Must visit again. May return in 3 weeks with children. Thank you Innes and Tracey for preserving this piece of paradise. Also many thanks to all the staff. All staff members are lovely, friendly and extremely helpful.

Thanks for such a nice review - Innes and Tracey and our fantastic crew of 4 staff try really hard to connect personally with our guests and as the sign at the gate says "share our wilderness heritage" with you. January has been exceptionally hot until now - so I'm thinking you took our advice and spent the whole day at the Lower Portals with the kids to escape the heat. It is a truely beautiful natural location with a stunning waterhole. If you are coming again soon, you may coincide with Australia Day, where all the kids activities will include some lamington refreshments in keeping with the spirit of the weekend! See you again soon.

.This part of the world is absolutely stunning, with the peaks of Mt Barney, Ernest and Lindsay providing picturesque backdrops for this beautifully put together holiday retreat.
We stayed one night in Henry's Hut. It was a pretty little wooden lodge, with well appointed kitchen and nearby facilities. The whole place engendered a sense of tranquillity, and sitting on the verandah watching the wallabies graze on the grass with Barney in the background was very special. Highly recommended.

Thanks Ruaridh for your comments.
Mt Maroon is also part of the McPherson Ranges that you viewed from your veranda, and is the best peak for you to try and ascend if you are tempted to try some mountaineering. It is listed as a Class 5 track, and is quite challenging, but is one of the "easier" mountains to try in these parts. Please talk to us before to climb it for the "secret locals knowledge" (tap tap on my nose!!) that will make your trip more enjoyable.

Right at the base of the highest mountain in South East Queensland. Perfect for a night before or after an ascent. Or maybe just a relax under the trees after a swim. Well prepared and clean, lots of shade.

Hi Dennis,
Agreed we are a good base for any activities on Mt Barney. You can walk to many of the ascent ridges straight from your door here at the Lodge. All are untracked routes except for South (or Peasants) Ridge. Please have a chat with us next time you are here if you are interested in any of the alternate off-track ascent options.

By the way, Mt Barney is the second highest mountain in SE Qld - Mt Superbus in the Main Range beats it by 16 metres!! But as it just another bump in the Great Dividing Range, and Mt Barney is freestanding, Mt Barney is certainly more challenging and impressive!!

Our family recently spent the weekend at MBL to celebrate my Fathers 70th Birthday. We were delighted that MBL could cater for a formal birthday dinner for 25 of us. The meals were delicious, with excellent presentation and definitely exceeded our expectations. As always, the staff couldn’t do enough to help make the weekend special. Thanks to MBL the weekend was a huge success

Room Tip: MBL offers a variety of accommodation options from camping to rustic cabins to luxury accommodation...

It was a great weekend for celebrations, I recall!!
I'm sure you will be talking about the spectacular electrical storm that went off just after dinner for years to come. Not something that you can book in advance of course, but very impressive watching the different moods of nature.
I'm still giggling at the events on the night, when guests assumed that the temporary power outage was because they anticipated that the birthday cake and candles were on their way out (it does take awhile to light 70 candles after all) .... and when the back-up torches were switched on it was soon apparent that dessert was no where in sight!!
Best wishes to your dad, hope his 70th year is going great!

Quite a few years since we have been to Mt Barney Lodge, and we regret it! It did not take us long to remember why we love it so much, and we were soon settled in for the weekend. We took our van, but there are many other accommodation styles available if you do not have your own van or tent. The grounds are always spotless as are the amenities. You can do as much or as little as you want, the choice is yours. The kids night adventures though are well worth doing. Plenty of fire pits dotted around the site, and lots of shade. Next time we will not leave it so long between visits!
