“Very different from other places we stayed in Kenya”
Reviewed 21 August 2014 via mobile

Arrived here after two nights in Samburu which was hot. Very green with a light mist in the air and considerably colder. Walked up from the car park and once you are in the hotel you can't walk around - there are no grounds/gardens. The rooms are small but cosy with a balcony overlooking the waterhole. The bathroom is compact but the shower was really powerful. We spent the afternoon sitting in the public viewing gallery catching up on wifi, watching the waterhole and ordering drinks from the bar. After the rush of two days on safari in the Samburu this suited us. I ordered a coffee and a monkey came down and pinched my sugar. Hotel was very very quieted as was most of kenya. There was no buffet but a menu to order from. Food was good and restaurant staff were very attentive. You were asked which animals you would like to be woken for - we opted for elephants. At 2.30 am there was a knock at the door and you went out on your own balcony so you didn't need to see anyone else. I was expecting one or two elephants but no I counted 32 in total. They stayed for ages. Yes the hotel might look a bit dated but it's the experience you are there for. Free wifi as well.

The whole lodge has a serenity and tranquility feel about it.
It is not top modern but it fits perfectly in its nature.
Food is wonderful, there are no kids, it is quiet and there is chanse to see some game real Close.
You can go down in the basement, there is a tunnel that will lead closer to the waterhole and you can Watch bucks and other animals real Close.
There is also a balcony shared with other guests were you can just sit and relax and Watch the water hole. Everyone is quiet or speak very softly. Very relaxing. You dont have to be interested in the game, it is just wirth to go and relax.
They also have a spa section that will further enhance your restfull stay. I want to come back to stay a week just to drop some of the Daily stress.

This hotel is located at Mount Kenya at an altitude of 7200 ft and in the midst of dense forest. The ambiance is really a jungle ambiance with a tree hotel flavor. But you might be disappointed with sighting wild-life. There is a water hole etc. but one might be extremely lucky to sight attractive wild life like leopard etc. One should be happy with antelope, wild buffalo etc. However, we spotted a pair of Genet under floodlight. Wi-fi is there and food Is good and service is excellent. We visited in June and it was quite cold (min about 4-5 C) so you need to carry suitable clothing to sit at the balcony for sighting wild life at night.

Worth doing after Masai Mara tented camp visit. Because the lodge is next to watering hole, the wildlife comes to you, rather than go out on safari. Lodge is amazing construction and a delight to walk around. Great nature walk with armed guard (for elephants) and tea break in the middle of the walk. Lodge was accommodating for our 7-person family. Meals were good. Rooms not five star, of course, but nice enough.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view of the watering hole!

Recently went to this Lodge during a company trip of over 30 people...the service, ambience and food were awesome...accomodation was over the top....the serenity was perfect and overwhelming...i only wish that Mountain Lodge Serena could offer facilities for guests who want to let their hair down, have fun, and make lots of noise! This will enable all sorts of people feel at home, without having to be reminded to quieten down all the time. I took a BIG issue with a racist tourist who went out of his way to tell us to shut up.

I spent one night here last month, aIong with my group. I first visited this lodge in 1991, when it was part of a different management. I was absolutely bowled over then - and on subsequent visits until 2000 - by the overall location and appeal of the place, which was then in the middle of a dense montane forest that had elephant and buffalo herds moving across all the way to the lodge, on the slopes of Mt Kenya. The car park was at that time freely accessible to wildlife and one had to be escorted to the tree lodge through dense forest and past a few 'hide huts' inside which you were to take cover until the danger had passed. Sadly, that element of excitement is now gone for ever! Almost the entire road up from Kiganjo (40 km) is now fenced on one side and a large part belongs to the Kenyan President! So its all tarmac all the way to the lodge, with greenery everywhere (which is great) but not much wildlife movement.

The lodge itself is a wonderful experience and one of the iconic tree hotels of Africa. The waterhole is regularly visited by elephants, buffalo, waterbuck, bushbuck, hyena, the odd leopard, giant forest hog, white tailed mongoose, Sykes monkey, and lots of birds eg Egyptian Geese, bee eaters, Hartlaubs turaco, Silvery cheeked Hornbill, apalises, weavers, etc. You will be asked to write down the animals you wish to see after going to bed and the expert on duty will come knocking on your door when that animal comes to the waterhole. Its a wonder how he knocks on so many doors all night! There is a birdwalk through the forest with a knowledgeable guide which is a must do and it includes a very welcome surprise which is best experienced first hand!

The rooms vary in size - mine was tiny (no 26) but it had 2 beds and a balcony and a nice if small bath; but it was comfortable. There is a nice woody look and feel and that is the real charm of the lodge. The food is good - its a set menu that includes soup, main course and desert. There is a large viewing balcony behind the bar and the entire terrace is a great place to hang out. At night there is a short video on wildlife which was well attended.

The one drawback is that if you have a lot of luggage you will find your room cramped up, so try and leave the unnecessary bags at reception.

It gets chilly in the evenings so jackets are necessary especially in the season (June-Sep).

Don't miss the underground tunnel that opens up close to the waterhole - you could spend hours by yourself watching wildlife from a few metres away! Its important to remain silent here.

Room Tip: For the elderly its best to stay near the dining area on the 3rd floor.
