Its a lovely place. very clean chalets, helpful staff (especially Sarah), the food is lovely and the organised activities are fantastic. Surprisingly the drinks are very affordable. Its not a place for doing a lot. Bring a book. Its more of a chilling retreat with wild life thrown in. Don't expect animal numbers as in the parks in the major safari places in Southern Africa.

Room Tip: Ask to be allocated Chalets 1 to 6 - its a shorter walk to the dining room. Do let them know in adv...

We spent 2 very relaxing days here in December with some good friends, and literally had the place to ourselves! Sarah & Nick were very accommodating from when we arrived until we left. Our every need was taken care of, even when I desperately needed an internet connection for a work emergency, they managed to sort something out for me!
All the staff were so friendly and the food was very good, and more than enough.
Nick, our guide, has a great sense of humor and kept us entertained on all our tours, the afternoon boat trip being the highlight of our trip, so many hippos, crocs & birds and of course the most amazing sunset......

I am not sure this is very helpful to readers but I just can not find anything negative to say about this place. The food is first rate, which was a surprise as we had been warned not to expect too much. The staff are very helpful and have an in-depth knowledge of their environment that they are happy to share with guests. Nothing is too much trouble, for instance whilst wifi is not available they made arrangements for us to visit an admin building to send an urgent email.

Liwonde is not the richest game viewing area but if you visit i would highly recommend this lodge.

Dear langham1954

Thank you so much for taking the time out to write your post on tripadvisor. We are so glad to hear that you were pleasantly surprised by the offerings at Mvuu.
The people of Malawi are renowned for their friendliness and we are glad to hear that you got to experience this first hand. Whilst the area is not the most prolific animal producing area, as you say, the location of the lodge on the banks of the Shire River do help to make up for this.

Hopefully we will have the honour of hosting you at one of our other lodges in Southern Africa at some time.

Thank you Sarah, Nick, Tom, Justin, Jim and all of the staff who create this tranquil and comforting setting amid wild animals! I was moved to feel part of the landscape, without intruding too much. I deeply appreciate the complete dedication to keeping the impact of the lodge on the environment as neutral as possible, while providing for the safety and comfort of all. It is absolutely clear that safety is first at Mvuu Lodge, but this is accomplished in a way that also seems part of the landscape. The level of cleanliness, attention to detail and the amenities provided are truly amazing - it is equal to and surpasses many five star hotels in the states. I marveled that I could be so comfortable in my bed, under the stars of the southern hemisphere, listening to hippos, elephants, birds and chirpings of the wild. Nomalha, of Wilderness Safaris, made all of the arrangements. Everything came off without a glitch. Sarah was our gracious and highly competent host. The food was great. Nick, our guide, was approachable, highly knowledgeable, with a fine sense of humor. Tom, our guide in training, was masterful with the boat! We saw extraordinary birds! And we learned delightful detail about all manner of things as we walked through the wilderness and glided down the Shire River. To simply be, quietly, in the presence of these wondorous animals is a transformative experience. It is also a privilege to travel across the world and be among the people of Malawi. I am ever grateful to everyone at Mvuu Lodge for making this possible.

Room Tip: Our party had four rooms and we each loved our room.

We stayed at the lodge as a group of 6 friends and pretty much had the place to ourselves. On arrival we were treated to a fantastic lunch and then shown around by Sarah our host who was great. The set up is brilliant with the lodge on the edge of a watering hole and the chalets then further spread out around this so you are guaranteed to see wildlife, should be pointed out that the chalets themselves are very high spec and comfortable with amazing views.
We were only here for one night but managed to fit in the evening safari, morning walk and boat safari, all of them run by Nick who lived up to his billing as being very knowledge with a great dry sense of humour. Although it was unseasonably cold we saw a lot of wildlife including crocs (loads) hippos (even more) and elephants.
Overall we had a really good time and would recommend it to anyone. Probably worth staying for two nights though.

Mvuu Wilderness Lodge sits across the river from the main Liwonde Park entrance - so arrival is by boat. The lodge has an inviting swimming pool; loo with a view; raised and welcoming lounge/bar/dining area overlooking a creek complete with hippos and crocodile. Chalets are fitted out to an exceptional standard with indoor and outdoor showers and raised decking overlooking the creek. Wildlife is varied and observed on foot, in vehicles and by boat - enabling really close up encounters with elephant and hippo. There is also a rhino sanctuary but no guarantee that you will find the introduced rhino during a visit - they are pretty secretive. Camp manager Sarah was wonderfully welcoming, friendly and the perfect hostess. Food was excellent and both guiding and scouting delivered a great mix of mammals, birdlife, reptiles, flora and fauna. Our bush breakfast at the end of an early morning walk was particularly memorable. If you can, try and arrange to leave the lodge by boat down the river as we did - a wonderful way to move on.

Mvuu Lodge sits on the bank of the Shire River. Great location, excellent luxury tented accommodation with outside shower and attentive staff and guides. Very good food nicely presented. Great birding destination and with predators and rhino as well. Enjoy a bush walk, river cruise or game drive. Sarah looks after your every need. Should be combined with a trip to Nyika Lodge (also Wilderness Safaris) and no better company to do this with than Zambezi Travel and Safari, locally based in Victoria Falls and run by professionals. Well worth a visit for several days

Room Tip: Rooms 1-3 nearest the dining room, 6-8 are farthest away but have best view.
