“Cheriton Guest House a "home away from home"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 November 2012

The Cheriton Guest House is truly a home away from home. Denise and Dirk go out of there way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. Each room is named after a SA Navy Ship and the decor is simply fantastic. Not many places offer you a range of DVD's to watch if there is nothing on tv. The braai area, swimming pool and jacuzzi is also ideal for a family to stay there. You do not even have to leave the premises. The view from the verandah over Simon's bay is absolutely breath taking and there is no better way to enjoy your breakfast. The bar area is another room where you can spend the entire day and you would still not have viewed all the memorabilia and in addition there is not many places that still have a honesty bar!!! There is also very good cell phone reception whereas in other areas of Simon's Town it is not so good.
Once again once you have met Denise and Dirk they almost become a part of your family. Absolutely fantastic!!!!

Room Tip: The Simon van der Stel room gives you access to the lounge at night and also you have access to all...

We stayed here in March for one night and loved it - I wish we could've stayed longer.
We were lucky enough to get the Bar Room and enjoyed the novelty of being 'in charge' of the bar. Unfortuantely we were out when the other guests were in but I would imagine this would be a fun place to hang out.
The hosts are very generous, as well as the honesty bar, access to binoculars etc you are also welcome to enjoy their extensive DVD collection if you having a quiet night in.
The B&B itself was a treasure trove of memorabilia which we enjoyed looking at. Breakfast was wonderful, made even better by the view out over the bay from the veranda.

Room Tip: We enjoyed staying in the Bar Room but it may not be for everyone. It is relatively small as is the...

Thank you for commenting on all the good things about us. You obviously are open to interesting experiences while on holiday as you enjoyed the room with a pub-en-suite. It is a very popular room for celebrations but we always like to avoid our guests having to throw anyone out. We maintain control by closing the door at 20:00 which leaves the space private for the guests in the bedrroom. We sincerely hope to see you again sometime.

We spent 4 days in this BB located just 2 minutes driving from Boulder Beach and SImon's Town. The owners (Denise and Dirk) are simply the best you can expect. We reserved a family room (2 adults and 2 kids) that is large enough and equipped with many useful options (incl. microwave and fridge). The breakfast is served in a wide common area and the meal is definitely the best we had in South Africa. I strongly advise to spend your days in this location (consider that Cape Town Waterfront is reached after less than 45 minutes driving). The Cape Point reserve gate is at 10 minutes.

It really was everything you could wish for in a B&B. Spotlessly clean, a delicious breakfast, warm hospitality, a stunning location and thoughtful attention to detail in every aspect of the guest rooms, bar, lounges, dining areas and garden. Owner-operators, Denise and Dirk, should be very proud to offer such a world-class establishment to local and international travellers alike. You could spend hours (probably even days) perusing the myriad of maritme paraphernalia that they've painstakingly collected and tastefully displayed throughout the B&B, from old photographs to sailor's uniforms. We stayed in the Emily Hobhouse room downstairs which was near the bar and outdoor deck and pool area. We ate out one evening and on the second, made use of the braai, microwave, plates and cutlery in the bar area to prepare our own dinner. The hearty breakfasts were definitely something to look forward to and there was really no need to eat much again until dinner time. One of the most memorable aspects for us was the warm, sincere and genuine hospitality that comes effortlessly to Denise and Dirk, that made you feel like old friends. I've already recommended the Cheriton to a friend in Australia and we look forward to staying there again ourselves.

Look up the work "welcoming" in the dictionary and they should have a picture of the Cheriton along with owners Denise and Dirk. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left we felt welcomed and like we were in our own home. The only difference is our home doesn't have such great views, proximity to everything in Simon's Town, 5 minute drive to Cape Point and I can't cook breakfast as well. The House and rooms we immaculate and well decorated. It's about a 5 minute walk to see the African penguins and maybe a 10-15 minute walk down to a lovely downtown area. Unlike some other areas in SA we were in we felt completely comfortable walking about at night. There is a SA Naval facility located in Simon's Town so there is a large population of military personnel in the area.
Make sure you ask about the "room with a bar", they'll know what you mean. We stayed there and loved it.
If you're looking for a place to call home while in SA, this is the place.

Room Tip: All the rooms are different so ask to see the available rooms. They'll more than happy to show...

Staying in the "Emily Hobhouse" room with the "Just Nuisance" bar outside our door was truly a unique experience from other B&B's at which we've stayed. We arrived after dark on June 30th so we really couldn't experience the beautiful view of False Bay until our first morning. We thought Denise and Dirk were going to be on holiday but they had a change of plans which turned into a real blessing that we got to meet them. They have a uniquely-decorated place and set an outstanding table for breakfast. We really enjoyed having breakfast on their enclosed deck overlooking the bay. The bed in the "Emily Hobhouse" room was very comfortable (might have been a memory-foam mattress; Denise was a bit worried about how we'd sleep on it but we sleep on a similar mattress at home so we had our best night's sleep at Cheriton in the 3 weeks we were in Africa!) The under-floor heating system kept the tile floor toasty to walk on but the room temperature very controllable. The area was quiet and not a far walk to the Boulders Beach area. If there is anything that might be considered a very-small detraction, it's that their location is about 2.5km from town and an up-hill walk coming back. At least in the winter, public transportation or taxis aren't very available. On our last night, we decided to go into town for dinner and Dirk very graciously took us in and came back for us when we called. That's special service! If we are ever able to visit the Cape Town/Simon's Town area again, we'd definitely come back here.
