We decided to go away for a long weekend, and made a last minute booking tothe Valley Lodge hotel in Magaliesberg. We checked in, and took our lunch on the patio. Our stay started with a 45 minute wait for toasted chicken mayonnaise sandwiches. Not a great way to start a relaxing weekend - especially when you have a hungry 3 year old in tow! We weren't the only dissatisfied guests. Other tables were also complaining about the slow delivery of food.
After lunch, we then drove down to Room 63 (Superior Room) - the parking area for those rooms was full - except for a space between a badly parked black Mazda and a hedge. We parked there. We checked into our room. I personally feel that at R880 per person per night (with breakfast) this was not great value for money. The room was shabby. We returned to our car for the remaining luggage - and imagine our horror when we realised that someone had scraped their car keys along the length of our car (from the back tail light to the front). The black Mazda of course, was gone. We immediately tried to find the vehicle - to no avail. We then drove to the security guard (who manned the boom at the entrance to the hotel) - who seemed unsure as to what vehicles had left the property in that 15 minute period. A lady at reception did try to help - but their records were not complete and did not offer any information on guests and their car registrations. We were so upset by the incident - that we decided not to stay - and checked out immediately (we did not pay). The hotel promised to investigate the matter for us. I heard nothing, so faxed a letter to the MD. He did reply with his apologies a couple of days later. While we realise that the hotel can not be held responsible for their guests, we do believe their security was lacking. In short, besides the unfortunate incident, the hotel looked very run down - and the service was below average. I also felt it was not good value for money - and that you could get much better accommodation elsewhere. A real pity, because I think it has such potential. I would not recommend this hotel at all.

I stayed at the Valley Lodge the last weekend in January 2008. I was organizing a special event, and the staff at the hotel did very well helping me organize the dinner, as well as special surprises for the event (flowers, cake, etc). The Superior rooms were the ultimate luxury, although even though I asked for one overlooking the river, I didn't receive it and they were all booked when we checked in.

The food is mostly buffet, which was good and with a wide variety; we had to fight to order off the menu (for lunch, we didn't want a whole buffet, nor wanted to pay for so much food). The breakfast and dinner were great. The setting was beautiful, and we saw zebra, various buck, wildebeest, and lots of varieties of birds.

The spa was wonderful - one of the best massages I received in years.

I would recommend the valley lodge - just not the standard rooms. The bathrooms need to be updated, although the living part of the room was fine. The luxury and superior rooms were fine.

I would highly recommend this place for a relaxing stay!
