“Hidden Gem”
Reviewed 6 February 2014 via mobile

A beautiful destination and exceptionally managed. Absolutely friendly staff! The food was divine! The entire resort is neat and quite. The serenity is complemented by the flowing river that runs past the place. The rooms are spacious and luxurious with double showers. The Boma is ideal for small functions. The bar has a full size pool table together with other games. Overall it is a hidden gem!

We have recently spent the weekend at Valley lodge. The last time I was at this hotel was in 1991 yes 23 years ago and it is as I remember it . The addition of the Spa and the Hotel Lobby complement the services.

From the reception to the waiters , restaurant and even been welcomed by the General Manager Laurence the service was nothing less than superb. The dinners are a buffet style starting with soup of the day , salad bar , three meat carvery , dessert spread ect ect wow. Breakfast was just such a treat. You can even order a picnic basket and enjoy it at the river.

The hotel is child friendly so remember to take there bicycles as there is a tarred road throughout the hotel they can ride on.

What an experience thank you the Valley Lodge Team

Room Tip: We stayed in room 53 close to the river. Very private with good security presence

We booked a spa for a group of girlfriends. We were not offered any drinks before or to place our things in a locker. When asked to move treatment to the pool they pulled their face! We were told we were too noisy and kept on shooing us. While other white people were told nothing. Food was way over priced and prawn curry was disaster. When the bill came over charged us. Luckily we picked it up

My husband an I visited Valley Lodge on two occasions. What an amazing experience!
They offer spacious and modern rooms with great views of the well maintained gardens and beautiful river. The dinner as well as breakfast... Excellent with well trained and friendly staff.
Valley Lodge offers spa facilities and services like no other, definitely a must when visiting the lodge!
From the second the booking was made right through to check out we experienced 5 star service. From the cleaning staff, front desk, waiters, spa staff we received 5 star service throughout our stay!

This is a 4 star lodge with a 5 star experience!
I look forward to our next visit to Valley Lodge and Spa!

My wife and I spend a day here without a room stay. We have been here before (at business conferences) and found the accommodation satisfactory. This time we decided to have a Spa Day to unwind into the New Year. We ordered a Lover's Special and paid R1,700 up front for the privilege. Having experienced Spa's around the world, we had certain expectations. These were not met.
The massage was so relaxing that my masseuse fell asleep. I had to wake her up a couple of times, eventually asking her to stop until my wife's massage was complete. We were not offered refreshments before or after although there was a communal self service area with Tea and water. The music was either too quiet or not relevant for a massage. The spa bath beforehand was good. The towelling gowns were threadbare and the men's slippers were tiny. I mentioned to the receptionist about the "over-relaxed masseuse" and she advised she would follow up.

The picnic offered was very good and kinda made up for the poor massage. We sat on the lawn next to the river enjoying the peace. This was eventually disturbed by the sound of Lawnmowers and Bin removals. We decided to call it quits and headed home.

We held a three-day workshop in one of the conference facilities at "Valley Lodge" sometime beginning of December (2013). We were a group of about twenty people, of which at least five fell ill with stomach problems and diarrhea either already during our stay there or shortly after. As one of the cases was quite severe - a salmonella infection, which was confirmed in a blood test, which made a stay at hospital necessary -, our company notified "Valley Lodge" about the fact that their kitchen was apparently contaminated with salmonella bacteria and recommended management to look into the problem and take measures to enhance hygienic conditions in the restaurant kitchen.

Unfortunately, the response of "Valley Lodge's" management indicated that they were not taking this problem seriously. On the contrary, management denied that "Valley Lodge's" kitchen could be the source of the infection. Because of the unsatisfying response we received, our company took the decision to black-list "Valley Lodge" in order to not put staff members' health at risk by continuing to do business with the lodge.

It is true that "Valley Lodge" is a beautiful facility, surrounded by stunning nature, and makes for an excellent weekend getaway destination. However, if your health is important to you, you should avoid the place. The food at "Valley Lodge" is usually provided in a buffet set-up and you will therefore find a lot of the dishes in the lunch as well as the supper buffet, suggesting that a lot of "tricky" food like poultry, eggs etc. is reheated multiple times, which unfortunately makes the restaurant environment prone to contamination with the notorious salmonella bacteria.

We gave the management of the lodge the opportunity to respond adequately to our concerns and put necessary measures in place. However, their response was highly unprofessional, implying severe negligence and lack of awareness of the necessity to act in order to contain the health hazard that is salmonella. Because of the disappointing response we received, I felt it was necessary to share - in my private capacity - our bad experience with other potential guests.

Spent 3 nights at Valley Lodge on a business retreat. The surroundings are pleasant as it is set in lush green gardens and is a short drive from Pretoria/ Johannesburg. The rooms are big, have been upgraded with modern furnishings and the bed was very comfortable, However the dark furnishings are too heavy and the lighting in the room is a bit faint. I always had to open the bathroom door in order to get enough brightness to read. There is also a train that passes close to the lodge around 4am which disturbs the tranquility of sleep at this hour. The food was quite good for buffet style dining. The staff were attentive and pleasant. I might return just for a day trip to enjoy the surroundings and the day spa but not to stay.
