“Good Budget Option”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

Billed as a budget option in guide books, this is nevertheless a very good option if you are off gorilla tracking. Just inside the gates of the National Park it is next door to the Ranger Station from where the gorilla tracking starts. The setting overlooking the forest is superb. The lodge itself consists of a dining and reception area with a choice of permanent tents or cottages spread out across the hill. We were very happy with our tent which was clean with a large bathroom area containing a very good shower (probably the best shower we experienced in Uganda across all classes of accommodation!). The staff are friendly and helpful and the food good. What more could you ask ? Profits go the local community so stay here and enjoy.

nothing but could stuff to say about the rest camp....having made the choice to book , because it is as the name suggests its run by the local community and we did want to help in some small way bring some work for the locals...

we were prepared for this part of our trip to be a little less comfortable than at other lodges we had and will stay at... but we were very pleasantly surprised... the staff were all very helpful and all new how to do their jobs...

the rooms were placed smack overlooking the virgin rain-forest and certainly my room was clean, tidy and very comfortable to stay in..

the food was also well prepared and was tasty..

also for those gorilla tracking the rest camp is 2 minutes from the start of your tracking.

i would definitely recommend this as a place to stay for your gorilla tracking... you will also be giving something back into the local economy rather than some rich foreign lodge owner...

Stayed here for gorilla tracking and loved it. I can still imagine inhaling the crisp jungle and seeing all the green around me.
The camp is located 2 minutes form the gorilla tracking starting point, which is very convenient, and 2 minutes in the other direction, from the village where you can stroll among the gift shops in the afternoon.
We stayed in a "self-contained unit" which is a tent located on an elevated platform. Above the tent there is a roof to protect form the rain. The roof does the job. It rained heavily when we were there, yet the rain did not get inside the tent.
The tent is not big, about 3x3.5 meters. And contains a double bed, 2 benches for your suitcases and two bed stands. Just what you need. There is one lamp inside the tent, which give ample light, enough for reading a book. No sockets for charging. You can charge at the camps' restaurant.
Immediately at the back of tent is the bathroom. It has 3 built sides and one side is the tent. It is intimate but can get a bit chilly in the evening. The bathroom is large and contains a flush toilet and a shower with very strong current of hot water. Just what you need after a day of trekking.
In the restaurant there is always hot coffee and tea available free of charge.
The only down side for me is that there is no internet access.

Lovely area near the forest and starting point for the gorilla treks. The permanent tents are clean and comfortable with mosquito netting, but the attached bathroom is open to bugs. The shower worked well. There is forest all around the tents and so at times some gorilla families have walked onto the grounds. That would be amazing to see, but rare. We did see some black and white coribus monkeys playing in the trees just outside our tent's porch.

There is no where else to eat but at this rest camp dining room because our meals were included in our price. Sounds good until you end up getting the runs from the food. This happened every day at this camp. I used up a lot of anti-diarrhea medicine here! When you have to get up at 6am to go gorilla trekking in the morning, you do NOT want that experience!

This was ideal for our stay to do Gorilla Trekking, the staff were very helpful and friendly. Food was good and they got up early on our departure date to collect our cases, and provide breakfast. Rooms were Ok, a bit damp, but we were in the rainforest!

This place is genuine in every way. I stayed in a safari tent, others in my group were in the self contained tents or in the bandas. 13 people rated this the best, most enjoyable place they stayed on their safari in Uganda or the second best. Quiet, peaceful and directly adjacent to the gorilla trek briefing point.

1. Beds were comfortable
2. Rooms and safari tents nicely sized.
3. Bathrooms very large. Always had plenty of hot water in the shower.
4. Staff is wonderful, real people treating us like real people. Friendly and so very helpful. I would never stay anywhere else in Bwindi.
5. Hot water in the restaurant available all day for tea, hot chocolate and coffee.

There are a number of more "upscale" lodges in the area, but for us staying in a lodge operated by the local people met our criteria for thoughtful tourism. The facility is maintained and was built by the local people. It is quite nicely done, some things are rough, but all the amenities have been thought out.

Room Tip: Some safari tents require a steep uphill walk of 100 feet to get to the restaurant level. This was n...

...it's good! It's not luxury, it doesn't pretend to be. Staff very helpful and friendly, good and drink homely (but perfectly adequate), same for the accommodation (I was in a banda); pathways down to them are a bit rough 'n ready, but that's all part of its charm. And, it's good value for money, which can't be said of everything in and around Buhoma.

Room Tip: If you don't want to schlepp too far down the stoney pathways in the dark get one nearest the re...
