The Buhoma Community Rest Camp
Reviewed 14 February 2011

My wife and I were travelling with another couple and we each booked permanent tents. The views from the restaurant and tent are very memorable and stand out as this lodge's greatest asset. Hot water was there our second night but not the first. Meals are decent but a bit high for a "budget lodge". The staff was friendly and eager to please.

The only negative to register was that when we originally went to pay cash as required to confirm our bookings at their Kampala office, it was open but no one was there to receive our payment. We phoned the manager and he said to "just keep waiting". After waiting nearly an hour we called the manager again. He promised to hold our rooms and said that we could pay upon reaching Bwindi. He even phoned us the day we were on route to Bwindi to inquire if we still wanted the tented rooms. However upon arriving that evening our rooms had been given to others. The staff scrambled and put us in an older banda style room which hadn't even been made up since the previous guests. When we asked for some small compensation for the error the manager bluntly refused saying it was beyond his authority. Strange since it seemed well within his authority to give our rooms away just hours before!

If i was doing the trip again i would think about the following
the journey by landrover from kampala took 12 hours
camera - you can not use flash with the gorillas - however the video on my camera was superb
the tents are adequate, hot water doesnt always run, but it is damp on the edge of the forest
the community walk was great - tipping is expected - make sure you have plenty of notes of low denomination - even the bar at the camp had difficulty changing money
tuck your trousers into your socks - i did get bitten

This is right in the middle of the Bwindi forest, and the views from the restaurant and rooms take in the scenery nicely. The restaurant staff was kind, and the other visitors all have tales to share over your meals. The room we stayed in was a large well-furnished platform tent with an attached bathroom with full plumbing, but no sink. It is within walking distance of the meeting point for gorilla-tracking, and close to many other day hike starting points, and an easy walk to the shops along the main road.

My dad and I have just returned from Uganda and the Buhoma Community Rest Camp was the biggest pleasant surprise we encountered on our travels. We thought it was going to be a rundown and dirty location however it was extremely clean, food was great and the service was wonderful! We stayed in a permanent tent and to our surprise it had its own shwoer and toilet!! This was fantastic seeing as though the people in bandas had to use common showers and toilets. We would definitely recommend this location to anyone staying in Buhoma!!

Compared to some of the other options in Bwindi, the Buhoma Community Rest Camp is a fraction of the price, although (obviously) far less luxurious. We stayed in one of the bandas with shared toilet facilities. The banda was clean and simple and fitted with two twin beds and mozzie nets. The toilet facilities were kept surprisingly clean and hot water was readily available. Dinner was hearty and served on the balcony over looking the forest. Nice vibe, with most other traveltes being NGO volunteer-types. Service was friendly. Good base for seeing the gorillas (walking distance to the national park HQ) and recommended for clean and basic accomodation.

When we visited the gorilla fee was $500 a person for 1 hour with the apes. We only had to walk for a couple of hours with the guide, spotters and rangers. It wasn't too physically demanding, but I'm told it varies. We were lucky there were only 5 of us in the group so it was quite an intimate experience. Was it worth it? I think so, as once in a life time experience, also, supporting such programmes should help lead to conitnued conservation. Although, we did hear a rumour, that they are considering raising the fee to $750 and then $1000...

This is basic accomodation but clean and comfortable. You get tents with attached bathrooms. Five of them are right next to the jungle. We were told occasionally the gorillas came to visit in the middle of the night.

The places were clean and they supplied flashlights, candles and bug spray. Electricity ran from 7 PM to 7 AM. There were no electrical plugs in the room but the office could charge batteries for you.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner was served with two options for lunch and dinner. They could also pack a lunch for gorilla treking. Make certain to tell them no butter on the sandwiches.

Staff was friendly and attentive. Can't go wrong for the basics.

I recently stayed at the Buhoma Community Rest Camp which is situated right next to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park Headquarters, so it is very convenient for gorilla trekking.

The bandas are built on the hillside overlooking the forest, and the grounds are lovely. The accommodation is either in bandas (little huts) or permanent tents, and some of these have an ensuite bathroom and toilet, and a balcony with a beautiful view of the forest. The accommodation is simple, clean and very comfortable. The staff are very friendly and the food was lovely.

This was one of my favourite places that I stayed on a 5 week trip. I enjoyed my stay here very much and would like to return for a week next time- it would be a great place to just relax and listen to the birds sing. Money earned from this camp goes back into the community to fund the local hospital, school and other projects, which is another aspect of this accommodation that I like.
