“Great stay, great staff.”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

We stayed 2 nights at the lodge as part of a gorilla tracking excursion - the lodge is within a few minutes drive of the gorilla tracking reception area. The rooms were excellent and the views were spectacular. The staff went out of their way to make sure we had a great stay. We took the lodge up on their offer to prepare some typical Ugandan food, which was a nice touch. After our Gorilla tracking, we had a walk through the local village and visited the school with the lodge manager. He also arranged for a local dance group to provide some entertainment one evening. The tour of the village and meeting the students were some of the highlights of our safari in Uganda.

Watching the gorillas a few meters away in the jungle is a life time experience. The Gorilla Travel Lodge is the right place to stage the visit. The staff is extremely attentive and ready to cater any needs. The bungalow units are nicely built on the sides of a lush valley. Each one has a nice sofa on the veranda; and ideal place to relax after trekking for 6 hours during the day. Electricity is solar powered and limited. Pack light.

I was very happy with this place, it is about 5mins drive from where you go to do the trek with the gorillas, beautiful location. The rooms are very well presented, simple, big and clean. Beds are very comfortable but we didn't get a double bed that we had booked, instead we just got 2 single beds, not very romantic! Some reviewers have complained about high prices but we didn't pay that much with the tour company we booked, but I did email about 25 company's asking for a quote on the exactly the same tour and lodges prices ranged up to $1000 more for the same lodges! The shower was hot, but you have to be patience and let it heat up. I did hear other people complain about no hot water, Keep in mind that this is an isolated location they use solar power, so you have to charge your electrical appliances at the reception. The food is not great but it's fine. Overall I would definitely book this lodge again, perfect location and nice rooms, I really enjoyed this place. 3 stars western standards but really 4 stars because of the remote location

Room Tip: Stay in the rooms close to reception, so you don't have to walk up the hill

I have mixed feelings on this lodge! If it was 1/3 of the price I would be raving about it! but at $300 its pretty basic in terms of facilities. The destination is stunning and location amazing right next to Bwindi. However the facility was well ok at best! The good bits bar the location is that the beds are exceptionally comfortable! The rooms are spaced well apart from each other. The people were exceptionally helpful and eager to please. The bad bits are that the decor is very 1970's and slightly miss matched (again at 1/3rd of the price you would be ok with that) there is very little use of the outside space only one park bench. The main dinning area is ok but lacks decor or an atmosphere in many ways! The food was ok but again fro $300 a night it not as you would expect. So whilst you will not be uncomfortable in this place its not like many lodges in Africa that will blow you away. It all very much feels like a 2-3 star lodge trying to hard be a 5 star lodge and missing the forest because of the trees!

Very close to the park gates so depending which troop you go to see this is great , getting up at 7 rather than 5 .The final track up to the lodge is 27km on a single track mud road clinging to the mountain , best done by daylight I would say .
The room no 9 we stayed in was amazing , views straight into the forest .Great quality linen , full bath and the legendary hot water bottle . No power outlet in the room .
Every member of your party will need a torch to walk to the room at night .The paths are uneven and poorly lit .
The manager Jude was very friendly and nothing seemed to be too much trouble .
The food really let this place down .So much fresh great produce in this farming area , but they did not do it any justice .
The second night they had a little light music on and lit the fire ( at our request ) this really improved the atmosphere .
Everyone saw gorillas , some people walked for half an hour others for 5 hours to see them .You will long trousers , you really are crawling through the vegetation .

Spent a fantastic 3 nights with family of 5 (kids ages 21, 17,15). Arrived late and the owner rushed out to greet us warmly with hot towels and then quickly arranged dinner for us and our driver. Lodges were spacious and clean. No electrical outlets in the individual lodges but there was solar powered electricity and gadgets could be charged in the main lodge. A nice treat was hot water bottles in the beds or hot coals in the fireplace. Beds extremely comfortable, great bedding. Felt very safe and well cared for by the entire staff. Food has gotten mixed reviews but we found it perfectly fine, soups particularly delicious, accommodating to vegetarian needs. We loved the camaraderie in the main lodge around mealtime. If you want to walk to the entrance to Bwindi (from some places you will need to set out at 4am), and you want a great atmosphere, this is where you must stay!!!

Room Tip: Family sized room is actually 2 lodges connecting. 3 young adult children had 4 double beds and 2 fu...
