Ranjana Guest House

This is probably one of the best guest houses in Hampi. Our (very pink) room was basic but very clean and the service was very friendly. Our only complaint was the bathroom fan which was randomly turned on and was a bit loud (especially at night). The guest house has 24 hour power which is important as there are frequent power cuts in Hampi.

This is one of the many "guest houses" in Hampi, which are actually just people's homes with a few rooms let out to tourists. In its league, its probably one of the better ones - we took a room on the ground floor (the upper rooms being full when we turned up) priced at Rs 700 (prices seem to vary, depending on whether its season/off-season). The rooms on the upper floors are slightly more expensive, and apparently have breakfast thrown in. The room was decent in size, equipped with a clean and comfortable bed, a dressing table and a small TV, the bathroom was very clean and the hosts were polite and non intrusive. However, the best thing about this place is its location, it is very conveniently located close to Virupaksha temple, Hemakuta hills and the Hampi Bazaar. It's also within walking distance of Mathunga hill, which commands an incredible view of the ruins of Hampi. An early morning trek up the hill is a "must do" activity while in Hampi - watching a new day break over the ancient relics is a magical experience!

Room Tip: Choose the ones on the upper floor if available, they have a terrace attached.

This guest-house is run by Mr Dass and his family. It is located very close to the Hampi Bazaar and is great for exploring Hampi every day (rather than having to run back and forth each day between Hampi and Hospet). Given the paucity of good accommodation options in Hampi, this is one of the better places to stay there, unless you're willing to stay in Hospet instead, which is about 30 minutes away from Hampi by car/auto.

We stayed in one of the rooms that had an attached bath-room and a geyser. The room was not very spacious, but it served its purpose of being a decent place where we could sleep overnight. We were provided clean sheets and towels by the staff. In the morning, they prepare break-fast for you as well. (They can also prepare dinner for you, at an extra cost, but we didn't avail this facility.) We were also given (much-needed) mosquito-repellents for the night.

We hired an auto-driver known to the family for the whole day each day to explore Hampi and he turned out to be good and fairly knowledgeable about Hampi's past.

This guest house is located in a great area of Hampi from which you can see tha main entrance of Hampi Bazar. We arrived on the worst day of the year: August 15 (Independence Day for India) and paid 900 rupees for our room. Here the details of our so-called luxury room: an extremely small, narrow double room with a noisy fan, hot water only from 7 to 9,30 a.m., a toilet where you couldn't throw any paper even if the flush worked! And the bathroom was all unutterably rusty especially the shower, the wash basin was microscopic and the whole place was full of mosquitos.
We chose not to taste their breakfast and left the day after.
The standard is very low but the real scandal is the price..even if that was considered high season. If you can, choose another place!!

Hampi is a fairly well-profiled tourist destination, so we picked Ranjana Guest House based on our conversation with the owner and the reviews on TripAdvisor. Our overall experience was rather good, and we had little to complain about.

The big plus in Ranjana's favour is its location, It is just a 2-minute walk from the Virupaksha Temple and Market Street. So our Hampi tour could start right away!

Rooms:
We had a room on the first floor. It was clean, medium-sized and functional, There was a bed with clean sheets, a television, an air conditioner (you have to ask the owner for the remote) and a small dressing table with a mirror, The bathroom was clean. Hot water is available only in the mornings till 9 a.m, but with Hampi being fairly hot in the day, that may not be an issue for most people.

Amenities -
Pick-up: The guest house offered to have us picked up from the station. It costs INR 200 if you go through them. Directly taking an auto-rickshaw from the station will require some haggling, but 150 is the standard rate that one must try and stick to.
Food: Ranjana Guest House has a menu that is of decent quality and is fairly similar to several of the eateries outside in terms of food items and price. However, I suggest you try the restaurants outside for variety as you watch the world go by instead.

High Seasonal Tariff
While we had a trouble-free stay at Ranjana Guest House, the rates for the new year were INR 1500 (as compared to their usual tariff of about 800 per day).

Also, we did have a mildly sour experience at the end. We were staying for a small part of the third day as we had an evening bus (Ranjana has a 10 a.m check out time). We thus requested the owner to allow us to pay 'half-rent' for the day, which he agreed, However, when the final bill was presented, he asked for 1200 as opposed to the 600 we were to have paid, saying that it was season time and so on. So a quick tip here - FIX the 'half rent' amount in case you plan to stay for a part of the day.
