In the heart of the most romantic ruin in India, the destroyed capital of the Vijanayagar Hindu Empire, built in a unique landscape of big rocks, lakes and river, the temple of Vitalla, that we visited at sunset, is the one jewel of Hindu architecture. Musical pillars are really not important compared with the supreme harmony of the building and the beauty of the place. There is no airports nearby, but I strongly advise all the efforts to visit it.

Please do take a guide - this place has lots of stories that you will miss without a good guide - ask the security folks at the entrance - they will point you to the official guides - they charge about Rs 400 or so - their tour will take about an hour -the place comes alive with their stories

The Temple complex is along the banks of Tungabhadara River and a very scenic place. exellent to visti early morning. There are many architectural details so it will be worthwhile to hire a guide on the spot. I was particularly amused by the chinese influence in the architectural details.

A really interesting temple which if you look at the carved details, it's amazing, It is still a temple very much in use with monkeys running around, there is an elephant that blesses you when you put a coin into its trunk.

Temple, its architecture, stone carvings, musical pillars, associated stories everything is incredible .Do hire a guide to hear stoeries about the king, queen, dance and music, they will charge approxly 100-150 for 30 minutes.

The main Vitthala Temple,Musical pillars and monolithic stone chariot is the one which define Hampi in its photographs.
