“they should be shamed”
Reviewed 31 August 2010

When we arrived at the hotel after a long trip from Piraeus and a long drive from Hania,we were told that our room was not available because the hotel was overbooked(althought we had prepayed for 2 days).Without even make us an apology and having an arrogand style they told us that we should stay for the next 2 days in another hotel in Rethymno. When we got back to Kalypso after these 2days and we went finally to our room(waiting for at list 2 hours to be prepared ),an extremelly bad smell was coming out from the w.c which was really discusting. The room was dirty ,the pools were dirty, the reception was dirty, all the hotel areas were dirty and the hotel stuff especially at the reception were so rude.

Have you ever witnessed a guest being propositioned to a fist fight by someone working at the reception desk? That was an idea of what was to come.
When we arrived at the hotel my wife and I were amazed at how beautiful the location was. I dropped her and our baby off at the reception desk to park our car and upon arriving at the reception desk I found more than 25 people waiting for their rooms. After our long drive from Agios Nicholaos we were told that our room, along with the other 25 guests, was not available because someone at reception over booked the hotel. Standing there with my baby in my arms we were all subjugated to a male employee's obvious psychotic moment of yelling and cursing at anyone sincere and timid enough to ask a simple question, such as where the bathroom was. The man at the reception desk was rude, calling everyone waiting that infamous greek obscenity which starts with the letter M, challenged another guest to a "rendezvous" to fight and basically swore and yelled at everyone and everything there.
Apart from the rudeness the hotel food was ATROCIOUS!!!! Every morning and every evening we were subjugated to the same meals. The eggs looked as though they had been regurgitated and recycled, the hashbrowns and pancakes were the same day in and day out, the evening meals were awful (as my wife would like to point out that she had found hairs on 3 seperate occasions in her cooked food) the deserts and meals were bland and you had to be a detective to figure out if what you were eating was a vegetable or some sort of meat by-product and, finally, the glasswear and plates were never washed properly.
We were one of the lucky ones who were waiting for a room as we got ours only 3 hours later, as some guests who had arrived the day before had been told they had no rooms available and were TOLD to find accomodations elsewhere!
Once we got to our room and opened the door we were welcomed by a moldy and dank smell. Concerned for our baby's health we told a woman at the reception desk (no...we totally avoided the man with the keen sense of hostility) if we could be given another room. Being told that there were no rooms available we should leave the door and windows open for the smell to subside. For the duration of our stay the smell never subsided and we were never given another room. In a way that was a good thing because other guests not only had smelly rooms but ant infestations, also.
Want to have your linen and towels changed? Good luck with that. In our 7 days there our linen and towels were changed once and instead of 2 bath towels we were given one robe to be used by my wife and I since the laundry staff never got around to washing the towels.
One last comment about the staff. The man at the reception desk was rude not only to the Greek tourists, but to all nationalities. If you wanted your room key it wouldn't be handed to you by him, but thrown in your general direction.
To sum it all up, the Kalypso Cretan Village is overpriced considering its lack of cleanliness, variety of meals and EXTREMELY rude staff.

Very bad choice due to the fact that the room was very old fashioned
furnished and also lack of taste .The bathroom
was in a bad condition and you didn't have the idea that it was cleaned.
By no means I would consider it a four star hotel.

When booking this hotel, I had some reservations, since there were a few bad reports in the past.

My wife and I wanted to visit Crete and celebrate my 40th birthday in the romantic and gorgeous beaches and mountains.

Well, Kalypso has been the greatest surprise of our last vacation. This was my 7th visit to Crete in the past 10 years, my favorite destination in the Mediterranean for vacationing, motorbike trips and both couples and family vacations. Kalypso is by far the best hotel I have stayed in on the island, especially for that price range!

First, L O C A T I O N !!!! wow, a small paradise in the mountains, with that gorgeous fjord-like beach, simply heaven.

Most of the hotel has been recently renovated; restaurant, lobby, terrace and pool furniture is brand new. Room furniture (bed, sofa, table & chairs) are brand new.

The room was huge and nicely decorated, clean and very well maintained, and so was the bath room. Huge terrace with sea view was perfect for having a drink in the afternoon.

Breakfast (we took BB) was gorgeous, with so many choices of yogurt, cereals fruits and vegetables, cheeses, meats and freshly made eggs and pastries.

We will surely return to the Kalypso and its great hotel and nice staff. The proximity to Plakias was also a bonus, as it is one of the best small villages to visit in the southern area of Crete. A walking distance from the Kalypso are few of the best beaches in Crete. Getting a rental car would certainly widen the activity options in the area.

Thank you Kalypso for a great vacation!

Great hotel. Friendly staff and the best of all was the fabulous location. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Three drawbacks the fridge in our room was barely cold and the food which was good was always cold. The third drawback was the disco which played loudly every night until 2.00am. We were out of season so there was plently of room around the pools and in the dining rooms.

Returned for the third year to this very special place. The location is wonderful for a quiet relaxed break in beautiful surroundings. bird song, wild flowers and three sea water swimming pools all add to the enjoyment.. The location is an ideal base from which to explore the south coast of Crete.
The staff are very friendly and you really feel that you are in Greece. The staff take a pride in their work and make every effort to help you enjoy your stay.
The two new swimming pools and the lighting on the rocks at night were new additions this year that I really enjoyed.
I hope that I will be able to return again soon to this haven of peace.

A friend an I stayed at the Kalypso in the middle of October, just before the end of their season. Generally we found the staff helpful and courteous. Rooms were spacious, clean and with excellent views and balconies. Food was good. There was a good range of salads and a decent variety of cooked meals each evening. Given that we were there within days of closing for the winter we were constantly surprised by the consistency and range of food on offer. It wouldn't be unusual to see quality and quantity fall off in the last few days of the season. This isn't intended to be a trendy boutique hotel but it's a good reliable holiday retreat.

Over the winter the management intend to embark on major redevelopments and refurbishment. With such a stunning location, guaranteed privacy and significant structural improvements ahead it's clear that the management intend Kalypso to become one of the primier hotels on the South coast. It's one to watch for the future.
