Visited many Greek Islands and several resorts in Crete but this was the first time to Southern Crete. We were welcomed with smiles and complimentary drinks by Costas & Angelo after Les, the cheerful Olympic rep, showed us to the pool bar. Long transfer but some wonderful scenery en route through the gorge. We had two of the Ouranos apartments on the neighbouring street that was only two minutes away. They were gorgeous, spacious apartments with outstanding views of the mountains and in a reasonably quiet location. Close proximity to the supermarkets, tavernas, bars and the beach. Looked after by Chrysoula and Angelo whilst at the pool and bar and equally by Costas and his excellent Gorgonas taverna staff - Babis & Giorgos. Excellent food, great company and lots of Raki. My daughter celebrated her birthday one evening at Gorgonas and the lights were dimmed as an Angelo ‘special’ cocktail with sparklers etc was brought in and the whole taverna of Brits, Americans, Germans, Czechs and Greeks sang 'Happy Birthday'. Spot on. Thanks guys.
Hired a pretty good spec Mountain Bike from Anso Travel (on the beachfront at the village centre) - 56 Euros for 7 days - great value - & covered East, North & West of Plakias taking in Prevali, the Palm Beach, Souda, Fragkokastello (long ride but worth it for the castle, the glorious beach & the shallow, warm, crystal clear sea), Selia, Mirthios then up through the smaller gorge (battling the wind) then across the plains and through rural villages to Mixorrouma and dropped down to quaint Frato and through the huge impressive gorge and out to Asomatos then down to the main road back into Plakias. Also took in many of the water channels around the hills above Plakias, which gives some relief from climbing the hills - which there's no avoiding in this area really – and these provide some outstanding views. It’s absolutely the best way to see a lot of the beautiful Cretan countryside relatively quickly. There are some tracks around the coastline also where you'll pick up the many lovely secluded beaches and coves.
I must also mention the family of Terrapins that can be seen under the small bridge in the centre of the village. Quite an amazing sight.
The World Cup was on at the time and we enjoyed a few of the games at the pool bar in Angelo's company (hope Angelo won more bets on the Olympic results than he did with his World Cup predictions!).
We will be back again soon - Les owes me a mountain bike ride up to the Gorge! (the toss of a coin at the pool bar decided between himself or my son joining me on a ride up into the hills above Plakias in the 38 degree heat).
All in all we had a great time and would recommend the resort and Costas Chrysoula to anyone who appreciates Greece and it’s beauty, the people, the glorious weather, the culture and the way of life.

Spent the second week in July at Costas Chrysoula.Apartment was very clean and serviced daily. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and made us feel really welcome.Pool area was great and location was excellent, just a couple of minutes walk to all the bars and tavernas, which all sold good reasonably priced food.I would have no hesitation in recommending Costas Chrysoulas and the resort of Plakias to anybody. Thanks all at Costas for a great holiday.
P.S. don't stress too much about the coach transfer, the coach we were on was air conditioned and had plenty of leg room and reclining seats and was much more comfortable than the flight.

These Studios are just the thing for a relaxing holiday. They are close to all the bars, taverna's and supermarkets without being effected by any noise. The pool is just the place for a cool down from the hard work of sunbathing and the pool bar is a great place to get out of the sun for a drink and a snack or in the evening to sit and enjoy one of Angelo's amazing cocktails. The rooms are nice with flat screen TV's a nice bathroom and adequate catering facilities should you choose to use them?? We used ours for that first cuppa in the morning and the odd sandwich but not for much else, the local souvlaki and pitta bar is just the thing for the lighter meal and the bar does some really good omelettes, burgers, bacon & egg rolls not to mention the toasties.
The resort is just big enough to give you somewhere to stroll around in the evening with some really nice shops to browse in and bars to get that all important top up of fluids. There's no worries for those less mobile of us, as this resort is really flat with most bars having a ramp should they be slightly higher than the roadway but in general there's no problem with access.
The beach is just over the road and has a nice prom along it's length, it maybe a bit gritty but in general there are some very good sandy area's if the beach is your thing. All in all the Kostas Chrysoulla Studios are above basic with good décor adequate catering facilities and Air conditioning if you should require it, there's a pool, pool bar with snacks available and they are just 20 to 30 metres from the main street but amazingly quiet. so go RELAX!!! Just do it!!

Room Tip: Most rooms are good and there's not much between them but the rooms in the annex are the biggest...

We stayed with my family for the weekend in a 2 bedroom room.
Rooms recently renovated, everything is new. Clean and comfortable.
Excellent location, in a quite street with no traffic but 40m from the beach the shops, the restaurant and the cafe of Plakias.
Pool area perfect, with a lot of sunbets and next to the bar. Childrens pool is at the other side of the fence, but is of the same owner and u can use it.
Aircondition should be free !!!

Just returned from a holiday in Plakias staying at the Costas Chrysoula apartments (July 2012). Overall impression is very good - the apartments are literally in just a 3-minute walk from the beach and the central village street with all the cafes, restaurants, shops and banks, yet in a very quite street. We were placed in the secondary building which is not in the same apartment complex next to the pool and everything, but it was just across the street, so it didn't really matter. I even think that it was a lucky advantage as we were provided with a much more spacious studio than expected with a huge balcony and a gorgeous view onto the village and the mountains as it was on the first floor. Self catering facilities were sufficient: small fridge with a freezer, two-coil electric oven, enough cupboard space and tableware. All the other amenities (bathroom, shower etc) were basic but efficient and fairly clean.

The only two slightly disapponting things were finding the place intitally (it is located very much off the main street with no signs to it whatsoever. we had to stop and ask locals a few times before we managed to find it) and food. At the time of booking I wasn't sure if maybe we should pay a little extra to get bed&breakfast or even half-board with the apartments, but then decided to stick to the self-catering - and god, I'm so happy we did! We did go for breakfast at the apartment's restaurant the first morning on arrival, but realised the mistake very shortly. At 5 euro per person we were offered, well, nothing really. They call it a continental buffet, but it wasn't much of anything: one type of muesli, some bread, jam, two types of fruit, deep fried egg, VERY salty and unnaturally looking ham and tea/coffee. There was absolutely nothing to feed our 18-month old son with even though they do position themselves as a family place: muesly was a way too hard for him to chew and there was nothing else, not even some cereal or yogurt. Our 10 euro felt well wasted and left us still hungry and disappointed, so we never went back there again, just ended up getting some groceries from the local shops and having a nice full breakfast on the apartment balcony which probably cost the same 10 euro for the whole week for all three of us and was much more enjoable.

To sum it up, Plakias itself is a great place for holidays: excellent location, gorgeous views, great food at the local tavernas, fairly authentic, amazing weather, crystal clear and warm sea, nice sandy beaches. The apartments were good too, clean and spacious, great views, smal but clean and nice pool and pool area. Just do not waste your money on the pre-paid food with the apartments. Also, you might want to consider hiring a car as there's plenty of nice places to see in the close proximity to Plakias if you're as ourselves and enjoy sightseeing as much as just a beach holiday: Preveli, Frangokastello, Rethymno etc. We even made a day trip to Chania which is about 100km away, but totally worth it if you have an air-conditioned car.

Well, where to start? Having been to many Greek Isles and stayed in many Greek Studios have got to say this definitely rates among one of the best (if not THE best) we have ever stayed in.
After a very pleasant flight on Jet2 we arrived late afternoon and were not particularly looking forward to the long transfer which so many reviewers have commented on but knew it was all part & parcel of the hol so braced ourselves accordingly. So,what a superb bonus to learn that we wouldn't be on the bus but were being taken to the resort by taxi! brilliant. Another couple who were sharing the taxi had to be dropped off first in Rethymnon but less than 1an hour and half of arriving at the airport we were sat in the bar at Costas Chrysoula enjoying a complimentary welcome drink courtesy of the owners.
Accommodation: Unfortunately cannot comment first hand on the studios as we were actually given an apartment which was situated in the next street! (albeit a very short street away) in the Ouranus Apartments which apparently are sometimes used for Costas guests. What a delight we found that to be - large, airy, newly done out (with the exception of the fridge but that was ok anyway) and a huge balcony which overlooked the street but had a lovely view of the mountains. The apartment consisted of open plan living/sleeping & dining area with a small divider to the well equipped kitchenette. Good quality crockery/cutlery/utensils & plenty of pots/pans, kettle and mini oven/grill with 2 hobs - more than enough to be able to cook if you so wished - in fact we did cook dinner there one evening. TV and hairdryer. Newly fitted out shower room, excellent shower with good tray & curtain. The down side was the 23 steps up to the apartment but we soon got used to those! However, from comments we got from other guests we understand the studios were also very nice. Basic Greek standard but all nice & clean - some better than others as some studios had been recently refurbished and others currently awaiting refurbishment but we understand this is all on the cards.
The cleanliness at Costas Chrysoula cannot be faulted. The cleaning lady (Sylvia I think?) works 7 days a week and our apartment was thoroughly cleaned everyday except 2 out of the fortnight - the other 2 days it was rubbish emptying only. Bed linen/towels were changed every 3rd day (towels sometimes every 2nd day!) - excellent service.
The pool area was also very well kept as was the bar area. The pool itself is only small and is deep - so be careful if taking kids. Also, the pool water is always cold - perhaps because of the depth it doesn't warm up as quick as some pools? - just a thought. No shortage of sunbeds but limited sun brollys which are not moveable from one spot to another. The bar is great and is superbly run by Angelo - a great character and he'll certainly make sure you enjoy your stay. Chrysoulla is on duty during the day and as well as serving drinks does all the cooking - a very good snack menu is available at reasonable prices and all very well prepared & presented by Chrysoulla.
Plakias: A beautiful resort, small but yet larger than we expected . Windy! Situated at the bottom of a gorge the wind constantly blows down here erupting in what, when we were there, was almost gale force!!! however, the wind is also very very warm. Numerous shops/supermarkets and tavernas and still very Greek. Indeed, very popular at the weekends with lots of 'locals' coming into the village to the beaches and for some good old R & R. The beaches are varied, from sand/shingle & rocky and ,if you look hard enough, lots of lovely coves where you can be all by yourself if you so fancied. Our favourite was a little cove at Souda Bay about a kilometer or so walk from Plakias, lovely for swimming as, although rocky ,it was easy to access the sea. At the other end of Plakias there is also a nudist beach should that be your thing! The whole place is spotless clean and no signs of all the graffiti which is often found in the larger resorts, i.e. Rethymnon, Aghios Nikolaos.
Eating Out: Spoilt for choice. There are numerous tavernas serving excellent food - in fact too many really, impossible to try them all in 2 weeks. However, an absolute must is the Sirocco. The food there is wonderful and the presentation and service second to none. Their honey glazed pork is to die for - scrumptious. Others we frequented were Gorgona (owned by Costas & Chrysoulla and often there are discounts for guests), Muses, Medusa & Taverna Harakas - all very very good. Next to Medusa is another called (I think) Manouss (or similar) which was excellent first time round but we went back and this time it was very disappointing so maybe a bit hit n miss there. Gialos on the seafront is great for drinks and snacks, again, excellent service & presentation. Another nice place for drinks & snacks is the Livicon, very pleasant & relaxing and a great people watching venue!
Getting around: If you like walking you can't go wrong. The Kourtaliotiko Gorge is well worth a visit and no need to be ardent walkers unless you want to be, a nice stroll through the lower part of the gorge is lovely. A little more adventurous walk is to the village of Selia and although you walk on the road to get there it is a steep climb. Aletrnatively a visit to the village of Mirithos is a must - either trek up the gorge or go by road (or,if you must, take a taxi for 6euro) lovely village, very affluent I would say with a few little shops and 3 or 4 lovely tavernas - try Taverna Vrisi and introduce yourself to Freddie the wonderful waiter there - you won't be disappointed. We actually went there for a drink after walking up from the gorge one day and twice of an evening to eat there, on these ocassions by taxi as would not recommend walking it at night due to lack of street lighting. Another nice one there is the Panorama with views to die for, as has the Vrisi. By main road try Souda Bay, as previously mentioned, and stop off at Cretan Spirit for a drink where the owner, Theo, accompanied by his lovely wife Maria will be pleased to make your acquaintance and keep you entertained - he does a brilliant impression of Basil Fawlty!! but is also very informative. Another great day out is to Rethymnon, third largest city on the island and lovely to wander around the little narrow streets of the Old Town, shopping or just browsing. It also boasts an old Venetian Fortress and beautiful port The local bus leaves from Plakias about 3 times a day and is 9euro return.
We travelled to Plakias with Olympic Holidays and can't praise them or their staff enough. Our rep at Costas was Les, a canny young Scot with a great sense of humour and who obviously really enjoys his work. Very helpful and informative but by no means "pushy" as some reps can be.
Overall: Would we go to Plakias again? - absolutely. Would we stay at Costas Chrysoulla again? - without a doubt. Excellent accommodation and great value for money. Lovely family (although Costas senior comes across as a bit dour, doesn't say much but doesn't miss much either!!) who care about guests comfort & requirements and most importantly that their guests have a wonderful & carefree time - we certainly did. And, of course last but not least, Angelo the best barman in Plakias! We hope to return in the not too distant future but in the meantime are left with some very happy memories of our stay at Costas Chrysoulla.

Room Tip: As stated in review unable to comment on main building studios but maybe request away from bar area...
