“Just the right atmosphere”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

Facing the Libyan Ocean on the south side of Crete, we have discovered a little paradise called Plakias and Plakias Bay Hotel. Just back in Scandinavia after our sixth stay at the hotel over the past 10 years, we have again experienced all the tranquillity and hospitality we could hope for.

Due to a late fight into Chania, we arrived at the hotel at 3 AM to be met by Natasha (who had seen us coming as she was down on the beach fishing) and her son and hotel manager Yangos (who right away served us a carafe of the house wine made by his father Aris).

Waking late to the smell of the Mediterranean sea and the Cretan herbs growing everywhere around Plakias, we could see Manolis was still serving his traditional breakfast of local food in the restaurant. He had no problem allowing us a swim in the bay before enjoying the breakfast.

Our tradition is tsasiki and greek salad for lunch in the restaurant at Plakias Bay Hotel – every day. They also serve an excellent dinner – but not every day. So we also enjoyed local Cretan specialties nearby at Taverna Mariou in Mariou, Dionysos in Myrthios, Elia in Selia and Christos in Plakias.

And in between the meals – in the calm atmosphere of the Hotel and the beach – we could read and work and talk together and again load our batteries for months to come.

Room Tip: The only swimming pool is the Mediterranean - 100 meters from the hotel :-)

Plakias Bay Hotel in Plakias is the place you come back over and over again cause you can't just get enough of the beautiful village the hotel is build in,you can't get enough of the friendly/hospitable people working and you defenately can't get enough of the beautiful view (it's in the very edge of Plakias up on a hill offering you the whole Plakias in your plate) and the silence you enjoy there (it's not even a kilometer from the center of Plakias, far enough to be quite and close enough to go for a drink at night) as the only that might desturd you is waves spashing at the beach (the beach is about 100meters from the hotel ;-D) or the old guardian dog called "Bouzoukis" that is daily roaming Plakias and when he get tired comes back at the hotel to bark at random people or cars for no particular reason to show to his boss that he earns meal he eats :-)

The hotel in being run by the family mostly and some friends of the sons of the owner, everyone is friendly and worths having a raki or two with them.

The decoration is beautiful showing that the artistic side of the Aris & Natasa (Owners) is pretty rich and full of colors (the windows and doors are difrent colors with nice combinations of them all in a greek island white walls) which this hotel unique in Plakias (also in that perspective).

The cuisine they have is pretty tasty, result of the creative minds of Natasa (most of those years but also her son's Klearchos that has been added to the cooking team recently).

The prices are pretty decent for the overall experience and you gladly would pay even more in the near future to go back again for some more.

Defenately looking forward to go back again...!!!

Room Tip: I stayed in room 202 but I can say that the next (to each side ) rooms are having the same view. As...

We (2 adults and one 2-year old daughter) were at Plakias Bay hotel the last week of May 2013. The hotel and rooms are good quality for the price (low season prices). Room with enough space, good mattresses, good bathroom and nice balcony. Breakfast is ok, nothing special but different choices. We had lunch a couple of time and fish was very good and greek salad good. The balcony of the hotel is very nice because one can have have meals under the tree with a beautiful view to the sea. Also from rooms on the sea side front, nice view of the sea.
I would spend some very good words on the hospitality: it was very good. They waited for our arrival until 1 am and were very nice all the time and they let me print my boarding passes from their print at no cost.
The location of the hotel is also strategic: on top of a small hill, just 150m from sea and away from the village which can be reached by walking in 15-20 minutes. Beach with beds and big umbrellas at 200m. Nice place for meals at 300m.
I would recommend Plakias Bay hotel.
Very nice places/beaches to visit around.

Came back yesterday after a wonderful week in Plakias. Plakias Bay hotel has the best location in Plakias, at the south end of the bay, with wonderful views of the bay and the town of Plakias itself.
A bit of a walk to the center of Plakias (20 minutes?), but the beach is only one minute away.
Four out of six evenings we had dinner at the hotel. Excellent. The best local red wine we have tasted in Crete. Breakfast is included, and has everything we wanted, including fresh warm bread. Very nice rooms with great views. Basic as always on Crete, but very clean. Great balconies. The mattress was on the hard side (as I usually find them in Crete). Plakias Bay hotel seems to be a family operation, and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We emailed the hotel that we were arriving late, and the owner called us on the way making sure we were not lost. We arrived around 11pm and he was out greeting us on the front steps. We will definitely come back.

Things seem to have changed from the experiences of many reviews posted here. Perhaps things have changed at the Plakias bay Hotel. We found the owner, no sign of his wife, very unfriendly, no welcome on arrival and no thanks upon leaving after ten days, don't even know his name. His sons were helpful but not pro-active. Room very basic, all concrete and DIY with a poor quality bed matress, though cleaned and made up, sheets and towels were only changed twice in ten day. The shower room had an electrical fitting falling out of the wall in the shower... dangerous and a very loose basin tap. Only a dim industrial wall lite to see in the mirror. Breakfast was OK but repetitive, same three hot items every day. The setting is as described and beautiful and the views wonderful. We wish that they had made a little more effort in many directions, certainly not the fun, family place it seems it once was? We know we can find better quality and value in Plakias and will return next year.

Room Tip: ask for a good view of the bay, not all rooms have much of a sea view!

The hotel is at the southern end of the Plakias beach and is very quiet. Nudists use this end of the beach but not early in the year. We stayed at the Plakias Bay Hotel between 17th - 24th April (2012). We were part of a group of 16 on a flower and bird watching holiday. Our primary need was good flowers and birds so more than basic accommodation and food was not our primary concern. We were booked for bed, breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal. Breakfasts were identical and cold consisting of plastic sliced cheese and ham, tomato, hard-boiled egg, fingers of 1/2" thick omelette, bread, solid cold butter, jam, cake and something greek in 1/4" slices without much taste whose main constituent was probably flour. Packed lunch was a long roll containing what we didn't eat for breakfast with added lettuce plus an apple and fruit juice and 1/2 a litre of water. Apart from the vegetarian option, dinner was chef's choice and consisted of 4 courses usually starting with a very palatable soup. What followed was tasty and adequate and none of us complained. The finish was a thimble glass of clear spirit (not ouzo) probably very strong but no obvious taste. The rooms are very basic. Ours had a double and a single bed that seemed to be a solid stone or concrete base topped with a firm matress. There may have been air conditioning for when it is hot but our night temperature was less than 10 C and our attempts to get any heat out of it failed dismaly and one blanket over the sheet was not enough to keep warm. A bedside rug on the cold tiled floor would have been an early-morning comfort. There was a small fridge to keep the watered-down evaporated milk we stole from the resturant from going off during the day and a telephone we had no reason to use but no TV. There was no kettle or anything for tea/coffee making so it was a good thing we packed our travelling kettle and tea kit. It is not reccommended that you drink the water from the tap without first boiling it. The power point for the fridge was unusual in that you had to turn the plug a quarter turn before it would push in.
We found a 'secret' socket in the wardrobe cupboard where we could plug the chargers for our camera batteries. The bathroom was the main let-down for our accommodation and this is why we couldn't give the hotel 4 star grading. The walls, floor and fittings looked drab and there was nothing to stop the shower from spraying everywhere. A 1/2" recess in the floor below the shower head stopped most of the water spreading all over the floor. We couldn't find a plug for the sink and it took the management 3 days to produce one. In the event we did find a plug half an hour before the management arrived with a replacement. We discovered the plug 7 feet up on top of the fitting that holds the spare bog rolls. There was only luke-warm water on our first day but it was hot enough to shower by day 2. All rooms have a balcony with a view. We looked north-west towards the town with a view of the sea and the mountains in the distance. There was a small table and two chairs and a useful expanding hanger for drying wet clothes. Unfortunately it was rather too cold to take advantage of the balcony at the time of our stay. On the bright side, the management and staff were all pleasant and polite. Our holiday was costed all-in including air fares, transport, 2 expert leaders with accomodation and food, so we can't make a cost comparison with other hotels in Crete. However, it does not fare favourbly with an equivalent hotel in Cyprus 2 miles west of the town of Polis that we visited on a similar holiday at about the same time in 2011.

Clean and reasonably friendly, in a good position near to the beach.
No shower surround (remove loo roll before showering), no basin plug, poor storage facilities, no mats on stone floor in bedroom, uncomfortable bed, no hot water in morning (only tepid).
Choose only if you like things basic.
