“Sighs and thighs”

Reviewed 28 August 2013

The drive from Kefalas is long and dramatic in places. Follow the signs for Prevali Moni and head down to the car park where, I think, it says Palm beach aka Prevali beach. You have to pay to park and there are no toilets. Do not attempt a visit with lots of beach gear as you'll soon establish why. There is a breath taking walk down the cliffs which is not for anyone who is unsteady of foot.

The beach itself is crowded and there is just the one snack bar. It was quite windy too. Try and relax and rest as the 500 steps back up are something else!!

Palm beach is a popular destination and thus rather crowded, especially given the modest size of the beach. the little restaurant/snack shop also reflects the popularity of the beach in its attitude and pricing. however the river and palms running into the beach is unusual and worth seeing once.

We drove to the Beach and it was a haggaring white knuckle drive on a 2 way 1 lane gravel road at the top of a mountain with no guard rail. Then there was a 20 minute hike up the side of a cliff. But the views from up there are amazing! The beach itself is interesting but in my opinion not worth it. The one restaurant there is not good either and very over priced.

Although referred to as the Palm Beach, this site is actually called Preveli Beach and is situated on the South Coast of Crete 200 steps down the cliff from the famous Preveli Monastery. It is in Finikas region but you wont find it listed as Finikas Beach. If you cant face the climb in the heat, the best way to get there is by boat from Plakias Harbour...the boats leave at least once a day, coming back at about 4pm which is perfectly long enough to enjoy the beach. Devastated by fire a few years ago, the palm forest around the freshwater lake here is considered to be a very important EU habitat - one of the only ones in Europe but it is gradually getting back to its old self. The river that feeds the lake winds through the gorge further up the valley. There was a small tavern there...but not much else so great for sun lovers.

We visited mid-july and it wasn't too crowded in my opinion. Yes there are a lot of stairs so be warned but the water was crystal clear and the palm forest was nice to explore as well. I think it's one of the best attractions in Crete as it has a scenery you won't find anywhere else
