It's a beautiful, beautiful place to be at. Well worth the trouble, in my opinion.

I took the bus from Rethymnon -> Preveli. It's the same bus that goes to Plakias but stops over at Preveli. You can check KTEL's website for the route and price. Do take note that the bus stop is at an obscure location and you MUST inform the bus driver that you're getting off at Preveli. The bus stop you're looking for is immediately after the Preveli Monastery stop.

There's no indication that it's a bus stop - But the bus will stop at the mouth of the road heading towards a carpark that leads to Preveli Beach.

Once at the "bus stop", it's a 30 - 45 minute walk to the beach. You'll have to walk along the road, past the car park to a cliff and down few hundred steps in order to get to Preveli. View from above is magnificent, so don't forget to snap them photos!

Renting a car and driving there would infinitely be easier - but you've still got to climb up and down said few hundred steps.

Well worth the trip but only if you're up for the "hike".

If you're taking the bus back to Rethymnon, don't forget to bring with you the bus schedule and be there waiting for the bus, else you get left stranded at the "bus stop". Give the bus +/- 15 minutes from said schedule to arrive and it will. (Don't freak out the way I did)

The alternative route would be to take a ferry to Plakias?

Who cares where a chocolate bar advert was filmed? It's not the best of roads to Prevelli beach but it's Crete for goodness' sake. If you have very small children do it by boat as buggy access would be hellish. We drove there with two elderly friends (70's but active). We parked up and shlepped to the beach and had a very relaxing afternoon and it wasn't overrun with visitors (unlike the beautiful but these days over subscribed Elafonissi). Crete's an island of adventure so go explore.

This is not the beach where they filmed the bounty advert!! FACT. It is called Palm Beach because there are palms on it. Why anyone would think that the bounty advert was filmed there I don't know. The beach where they filmed the advert was Vai beach on the eastern side of crete which again is known as 'Palm beach'(maybe thats why they got confused. it is also shingley for the advert they 'enhanced' the beach by dumping sand on it.

I have just read the reviews for this beach. I agree it is dreadful to get to by Road and I don't advise anyone to try. Take the boat from Plakias. The beach is a bit scruffy, but the whole point about this beach is it is where the Monks from the monastory led the British troops to escape in a submarine from the Germans. The Germans then took revenge by killing the local people and cutting the monastory of from everyone else. The monks survived by fishing off the beach at night, and using the land within the monastory for growing food.

I have just returned from Crete and there are two Palm beaches. One is Vai palm beach, on the east of the island above Palekastro, where the bounty advert was filmed. It's a nice beach but I don't think it's any better than some other ones. The second is Preveli palm beach, on the south coast to the east of Plakias. This is an awful beach. It's very difficult to get to, and the sand is grey and gritty. In the water there is no sand, it's all large stones. When you get out of the water the sand becomes like sludge as you walk in it. The view from the top of the hill is super, but don't bothher walking down the 400 plus steps to get to it. It's a long way back up.
