Lovely hotel in the Cantabrian Mountains and not by the sea, but we were not disappointed by the beautiful scenery. There was a spacious car park, and a picturesque aspect to the hotel. There are a number of steps down to the hotel from the car park and the hotel has a pool, which closes at 8pm.We were given extra pillows and there was no problem with any of the service, There was a choice of three meals (per course) but the English translation of the menu was not in evidence and the staff spoke no English, but we did learn the Spanish word for 'steak' and 'hake'. The food was very nice indeed, but we thought the breakfast was very limited basically one roll and pastries and no tea only coffee. We were only staying one night and so we did not mind. There was a lift and the refurbished farm house and all was very clean and tidy. There was Wifi in the reception. The bedroom was large and comfortable with he warderobe slightly dated but built into the wall. Excellent service and value for money. There were no English llanguage channels on the TV at all but we were there to enjoy Spain and happy to learn Spanish.

Room Tip: Really all the rooms were in good positions and there is a Lift to take you up to the other floors.

I stayed here four nights at the end of October whilst exploring the northern pilgrim camino routes to Santiago de Compostela. The hotel is in a lovely setting with extensive rear views across farmland towards distant mountains. The building is along traditional lines, well maintained inside and out and with ample safe parking. I was given a warm welcome at reception although I had not booked. It transpired that the receptionist was the owner’s daughter (Dad was away cycling somewhere in Europe). It was clear that she cared about her clients. The room was comfortable and clean, the water hot and everything worked, including free Wi-Fi. Rooms at the back seem the better option as they are away from the approach road. I had arrived on a local fiesta day and the hotel was offering a 10 course menu degustacion for €20 including house wine. The meal was excellent, with each course explained by the friendly staff. If ever you are lucky enough to be here for this menu it is a “must”. I also chose from both the Menu del Dia and a la Carta which offered a variety of courses at reasonable prices. There was a buffet style breakfast with sufficient choice for most tastes. I asked for a table to be laid in the lounge area instead of the dining room so as to enjoy the view across the valley. I really think this hotel is a little gem perched above the well preserved village of Santillana del Mar and located centrally for day visits out. Top marks to the management and staff – thank you for such an enjoyable time at Hotel Colegiata.

Room Tip: Ask to see the rooms at the front and back, then make your own choice - you might prefer the back for the lovely view

A very attractive looking hotel from the outside, but once you go in it was awful. It was so dark and unwelcoming in every corner of the hotel. The beds linen was clean, but there was a beetle walking across my pillow when we got there. A very noisy hotel due to the wooden floors and yes our room smelt horrible too. Breakfast consisted of stale bread and cakes and some cold meats. However, the breakfast room was full of flies which were crawling everywhere. We opted for a juice and a coffee, packed our bags and left earlier than we had plannned. After 24hrs on a boat Hotel Colegiata was a very dissappointing first night in Spain.

Room Tip: I suggest a room in another hotel!

Despite an attractive view and a quiet location, away from the town centre, I would not recommend this overpriced hotel.

My bedroom was tired and smelled none too subtly of urine. Several of the fitments were loose. Doors in the corridor were noisy and ill-fitting, requiring multiple bangs to close properly.

The bed was firm (good, for me) and the shower had plentiful and strong hot water but, owing to bad design, sprayed on to the bathroom floor.

The pool was tiny.

At breakfast (adequate), the waitress was surly.
