We are a couple from the UK and were the first people to stay at Salt Beach House. Naturally we were nervous and intrigued of what to expect. However as soon as we arrived we were overjoyed with our home for Christmas.
Salt Beach House is a beautiful, tranquil, charming and a perfect place. It has two big bedrooms with huge beds with lovely light stylish modern décor, one of the bedrooms has an outside bathroom the other has an inside one. The lounge is a fantastic place to relax either on the bean bags or the big sofa overlooking the ocean listening to the sound of the waves which is very relaxing. The outside pool and bathing area is also great, sadly we only managed to use it once the whole time we were here as it rained constantly which is unfortunate considering there is meant to be more sun than rain at this time of year, however we still had a very relaxing time and found it hard to leave. The house is more than big enough for two couples or a family or perfect for a couple on a romantic break.
Ranjan the guest manager looked after us the whole time we were here, he is around during the day and in the evening Ram the caretaker who lives at the back of the house is the security guard at night. They are both really lovely and helpful and go out of their way to help you and make you feel welcome. Ranjan and Ram went and cut down a tree on Christmas eve and brought it to the house in time for Christmas which we thought was very special and a nice touch. We also met Raskia the house manager who is very friendly and full of local knowledge.
Ranjan makes breakfast every day and you can choose how you like your eggs, we tried every type and they were all great. We also had a Sri Lankan breakfast one day which consists of various local curry dishes, it was a great experience to try. Ranjan cleans the house every day to an exceptional standard and replaces the beautiful handpicked flowers with new ones regularly, which is lovely, and he is also available to get you anything you need from the local shops. In the evening he can cook you a traditional Sri Lankan curry with one day’s notice (there is a charge). We would highly recommend this as it is delicious, worth the money and a great experience eating at the house, we ended up having it on two nights.
To get around you flag down a tuk tuk, generally they cost around 500-600 rupees to Galle and 200-300 to Unawatuna, you have to haggle and prices are generally more in the evening. During the day the best beach to go to and where there are good places to have lunch is Unawatuna and you can hire sun loungers along the beach there. We had a nice dinner at a restaurant called Kingfisher there one evening too, Galle Fort too has some good restaurants that a worth a try.
Apart from the unfortunate weather, we loved staying here and are already thinking about coming back. Thank you to Ranjan, Ram and Raskia to making our stay so enjoyable. We are very sad to leave and would have loved to stayed longer :)
