“Good hotel great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2014 via mobile

We have just spent two nights at this hotel. For the price we paid this is a good hotel in a brilliant location, our bedroom was lovely with a nice separate seating area, good bar/seating area in reception, nice library room, pool area etc. There are just a few things it is missing to make it a brilliant hotel these include the lack of ironing boards in rooms and the tiredness of some of the paintwork in corridors etc. I would still recommend this hotel as it is a good hotel but if the little things were taken care of it could be a brilliant hotel!

I stayed here after discovering last minute that I needed to be in Carlisle - really great hotel and I had forgotten how stunning Ullswater is - Windermere without the crowds. The location is certainly a plus though it is a bit set back from the lake. The public areas are cleverly divided so that the upper storey which is road facing has very much a country house feel, while the lower storey is lake facing and offers informal dining, bistro, coffee shop and bar. Thanks to a discreet bar facility at reception, you can enjoy the quiet upper area without needing to go downstairs for drinks. This was great for me as a business traveller as I could get on with work in a quiet and undisturbed area without having to sit in my room. There is a riverside terrace which had the added bonus of patio heaters in the evening, so it really did have it all. I had a double room for single use, so it was more than adequate for my needs, but I think if we had been using it as a couple, we could have found it a little on the cramped side. It was though a pretty typical Best Western quality bedroom with a decent telly and an easy chair, clean, light and modern. An added bonus was a swimming pool, though it is a pretty basic "swim up and down" arrangement, but too small for any serious swimming. If a pool is an added bonus for you, you'll be fine - if it is a non-negotiable, check it meets your needs. Another plus was a pool table and a kind of reading/games room, which if you had kids with you would really be useful. (also table tennis in the pool area) wifi was great - fast and reliable, thought you seemed to need to keep re-logging in a lot, so don't lose your password. Cumbria tends to be dear, so I was glad to have got a pretty good deal, but while a really great hotel, it is still a bit on the pricey side. Breakfast was great, good selection and well served. In summary a really good all round hotel that captures the spirit of Cumbria, yet is contemporary, with all modern facilities and plenty of informal space if you just want to chill.

Lots to like and enjoy about our stay at this hotel.Dog friendly room nice and fresh without pet odours, good location with the lake and steamers a short stroll away.Patio area looked inviting for a hot day and a good bar with large tv attached to the hotel. My only real gripe was the high price of food in the bar.Fish and chips at nearly £14.00 , 10 inch pizza and chips with salad £14.00 ! Mad prices for bar food and this needs to be looked at by management as it was a hot topic of conversation in the bar and no one likes to leave feeling ripped off.Inconsistent pricing by bar staff was also an issue with a different price charged for the same drink on every visit to the bar.Nice breakfast but a bit disappointed with the Hellvellyn challenge option which in reality was not a challenge at all and was a normal sized breakfast. All in all a nice hotel which i would consider visiting again.

Stayed here for two nights and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They gave me a free upgrade to a room with a gorgeous view, and at one point when I had problems entering the building at 1am, a staff member very helpfully woke up to let me back in -- amazing!

Arrived here after a long days walking. Nicely appointed rooms. Unprompted a Separate table for 11 people had already been set up in a lovely annex just of the main restaurant for our group. Good menu choice and lovely meals served.
