“Staff not interested or polite”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

Went today with my family we had just come from Balloo House Bistro for lunch fantastic service.
We arrived in the hotel bar area/dinner area to no staff waiting and eventually found ourselves a table we where only in to by 5 desserts and 4 coffee's but the staff was not very polite did not ask about services or offer any welcome whatsoever.
This establishment is owned by the same group that have the Merchant Hotel I am shocked at the level of service given to us today! I would not step foot back in it again after that staff members experience today.

“Wonderful location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2014 via mobile

We ate in the bar as the restaurant was closed. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The menu choice was varied. The mussels were terrific and the burgers succulent and meaty. We enjoyed ourselves. Unfortunately the ambience let the bar down. Would still come back though.

“Too much fried food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014

Rather unhealthy menu - poached or steamed fish would make a nice alternative. The other towns on route were pretty uninspiring. Quite a few pubs nearby had live Irish music which was great .

“Spectacular location but food disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2014

Seven of us went to the Portaferry Hotel for a family reunion because we had memories of how good this had been in the past. The only food on offer was a bar menu and we had no problem with that:- it all sounded great. Sadly, the food was simply poor, we all had different dishes - chowder, prawns mornay, scampi, burger and a ceasar salad plus starters. The salad was ok but everything else was very disappointing - the prawns mornay had little or no taste (frozen?) and the scampi greasy and again with very little flavour. Portaferry is undoubtedly one of Ireland's prettiest little towns and all the more attractive with the short ferry crossing from Strangford- so sad to get there and be let down.

The overall impression was that the place was being run and staffed by people who had never done this before. The place certainly has the potential to regain its former, wonderful, reputation. Let's hope the new management get some advice and really give it a go.

“Lovely location and top notch bar food.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2014

Great location and we had a table in the bar where we could get a good view of Stangford and the ferry coming and going. Service was excellent and very professional. We had the scampi (not cheap at £13.95) and the battered fish. They were both very good and the scampi in particular was the best I have tasted in a long time - really was top notch and worth every penny. We each had a glass of Muscadet with our meals and enjoyed a very pleasant lunch. Next time we are in N Ireland we will try to come back again, and can definitely recommend it as a great spot for lunch before taking the ferry to Strangford.
